Ohio Postgame Discussion...

Dino said he was playing 2 QBs.

Dino had packages for Rex last year.

Shrader offers something different than TD.

The O had stalled since the first drive and needed a spark.

Precisely. At least WE were watching the same game.

The offense got stale. You SAID you were going to play both guys.

So play both guys!

What's the worst that could happen? Shrader leads them on a couple TD drives, and then we have a "QB controversy"?

It's about "Best Man Plays" - let them play to show us who is best. In case some other people have forgotten, we were awful last year.

why does everyone think the currently back up QB should have been put in at this point or that point?
I don’t know about a specific point, but our head coach said that he was going to play 2 QBs and set that expectation amongst the fan base. So people are reacting to that. Blame Dino.

Actually the worst that can happen is a 6 or 9 point lead (depending on when you decide to insert him) turns into a being behind 1 or a 2 point lead.

Why? Because you have a guy who is more likely to make a mental mistake (newer) or you have a guy who is more likely to overreach and make something out of nothing, turning into an explosive play for the other team (nobody ever thinks of the downside of the freelance style).

If there is anything we know about Devito it’s that he is going to be steady and not give points to the other team very often.

Why do that when 3 of our first 5 drives we marched down the field all the way to the red zone with TFD making solid decisions (with arm and legs) all the while?

Right. People are throwing around the word “stall” and I guess it felt like it at the time to me, too, but we were executing and getting down the field just about every time. The downside of switching was bigger than the upside. We had 7 drives total. There’s not much room for error/testing within that. The plan implemented had us better at the end than the beginning, so I don’t get the hindsight desire to have done anything differently.

If you are going to play both QBs then you should want to prep both QBs. If you are not then there is nothing to complain about. You think showing no confidence in Shrader is helping him? Also the first half all we asked TD to do was hand it off to Tucker or a quick pass to Taj. Anyone could have been in at QB the first half based on the way we played. It isn't like we would need to dumb things down for the new guy as they were already as basic as can be.

We marched down 2 of 4 drives. The 5th we took over at the 26 of Ohio. After the first drive we had:

Punt- TD missed a wide open Tucker that gives us at least a makable 4th down around the Ohio 35.
FG- TD missed Taj for a TD.
Punt- this is on Taj for not making a play on that deep ball and the penalty.
FG- we took over at the Ohio 26 and only got 3 points.

We had four chances to get a touchdown and were 0-4. Six points over four drives with one of the drives already starting in FG range is not productive. Thankfully the next 2 drives we took care of business.

Two years ago Dino was fine using an ice cold Welch at QB in the redzone to give us an added dimension. Yet against Ohio with a better QB in Shrader, we can't use him the same way?

Drew Freakin Brees used to come out at times for a running QB. It made no sense that we didn't even run Shrader out for a play or two before garbage time. We went shotgun on 3rd and less than a yard. We couldn't use Shrader there just to sneak it? Or be the 2nd run threat out of the shotgun?

Goodness. Dino can see what’s happening and think “he’s close to getting it going” let’s see what happens.

Stall is harsh - scoring FGs instead of TD when we knew from the first drive we’d be able to run all day?

mountains outta molehills around here

Did we have a functional OL then or no? Apples to oranges.

We’ll see Shrader play more. It’s fine.

I don't think we will, actually, unless Tommy loses the job - just like I said in preseason.

Did you see this from the Post-Standard after the game?

"Babers said on his radio show on Thursday that football teams can’t be successful running two different offenses, and it looks like he’ll ride with DeVito for as long as he can."

Why not have 2 guys ready? I mean, this was one of those games you could play him with little risk. We only have 1 more of those, Albany. Even Liberty will be more risky than this game.

Coaches say things, most of the time it means little.

Well, when you recruit a guy from the portal who started in the SEC, and our incumbent only played 4 games last year, you hopefully can see how some fans might want to have the backup get some early snaps. It's not like you want to break him in against Clemson, after DeVito has been knocked out of the game, God forbid.

Not usually about the QB position…and in his post game presser he essentially said he plans on getting him into the next game. It’s not like he’s decided that TD has earned ever snap for the foreseeable future.

I think we will as we progress through the season. Tucker will need some relief and we have no need to beat up one guy when we have so many guys at RB. Lutz is good, Adams is good.
Jarveon is good as well. We have no slouches at running back. None. Like years past, the back ups are close to where Tucker is. Tucker is a beast.

tommys not going to play every snap. That’s for sure.

Did Coley play?

My fear next week is Schiano is going to put 7-8 in the box, rush 5-6, and pressure TD into poor decisions while containing the run game.

Shrader needs to play next week
If so, TD or GS will throw a quick slant to Taj who will shake off the defender a run for six.

I dunno how a DB coulda done more in his first game than Duce did.

Tons of sure open field tackles.
Broke up what would have been a 4th down conversion.
(which is basically a turnover).
ONE-HANDED INT to ice it late.
The open field tackle on Ohio’s running back Duce made was phenomenal. I haven’t seen many of our upper class men get so low and still wrap up. It was amazing.

Adams sat out last year. He has to earn his way back into the rotation.
I agree. I think that is what Dino is doing. We didn’t see much of Howard or Adams. I was beginning to wonder if Adams was still on the team. I respect his decision considering what those player went through last year.
