This is one thing that HCDM and GROB have done, but imo very differently.
-Doug has out all of his top athletes that he has recruited and put them on D. For example Reddish, Desir, D. Davis and others.
-While GROB put all of his best athletes on the offensive side. For example Williams, Houge and Smith. The only exceptions are D. Smith who started as a RB and the Jones Bros who were no brainers.

The idea did not work for GROB as the defense was worst of all time and the offense not far behind. while for Doug it has led to an above average to average D but a horrific offense. I guess we have to see how the WRs and RBs that HCDM recruited develop but it does not look good.

I am in no way trying to say that HCDM should be fired, I am just making the point that it takes both sides of the ball to be successful obviously and we need to have our best athletes on both sides.

Personally, I think this point is a bit overrated. How many examples of guys do we have that we being primarily recruited on offense and we moved to defense to "get our better athletes on the field"? Reddish I know could have played either, but it's not like he would have made an impact at this point anyway.

Dyshawn was moved to defense by the prep school, not sure how much say, if any, SU has in that process.

Don't know about Desir.

But back to the original question, how many guys were put on that side of the ball that other schools recruited to play offense?

Like I said before Reddish and Desir were both getting looks at WR along with Eskridge (WVU i think). Simmons some thought would make a great TE.

Never know where they'll end up though. Graham to WR, Harris to FB, Max B to TE, Tull to RB, etc. Not that any of them have have set the world on fire but where a guy plays his first year doesn't mean he'll end up there.

Broyld, McFarlane, Thompson and Cornelius coming in on O. Maybe Morris too. That's some talent right there.

That's why the next two recruiting classes are huge for Coach Marrone. He knows that this football team simply lacks playmakers on offense and those issues are being addressed in the Class of 2012.

I really hope so. Even if these kids start making plays as sophomores, next year still looks extremely bleak... besides Lemon (Maybe Sales)

Loading up the defense last year got us an 8-5 record, our first bowl appearance in years and a bowl win..So it already worked for HCDM and Shafer last year...
This years defense is talented but young and inexperienced

And there is a fair amount (unproven yes) of talent on offense...AAM, Gulley, Jerome Smith, Hale, West, Fisher

I don't see a clear case that the better athletes (potential to play either offense or defense) have ended up on defense. Hogue was a better LB than a RB -- so he could help more by the switch; and he was behind Carter at RB. The problem basically is Doug haven't recruited guys of the caliber of Hogue or Smith or Williams.

Different point: Marrone has used his JUCO/transfer recruiting mainly to add toughness & linemen -- not for offensive playmakers. He filled spots on his offense with Tiller, Hay, Cruz, Weaver ( a big, possession receiver -- maybe an exception to my point), Harris, Kose. His focus was on running the ball by adding blockers.

You never can say who else was out there in the JUCO ranks who might have considered SU. Was he searching JUCOs for a dual threat QB, a deep threat WR, or a RB to help the offense?

lol like they will contribute as freshman-the next coach might be the one they play for

Glad you like it. Took that pic myself. I was on the sidelines fo the Pinstripe Bowl. Here's the rest of the pics:

In response to rosconey, as for freshman contributing next year, Bailey and Provo are graduating, so why is it out of the realm of possibility that McFarlane and Thompson contribute right away, with Broyld also getting some wildcat action?
