Are these made up numbers? I’ve heard that Syracuse allocated $4 million to the basketball program. My source, posts here… So it all might all be incorrect.

But if our budget from the university is $4 million, and somebody yesterday said our full NIL budget was probably just below $8 million total, how on earth are we only paying our starters $4 million total? How is that possible? I strongly suspect that the dollars being thrown around have to be much bigger. Why would a top guy like Freeman or George accept so little when there are dozens of programs throwing around much bigger money?

The fact that it all is merely rumor and not actually known is part of what makes it so frustrating. Even in the pros, where we know exactly what contracts are, there are guys that overestimate their value and have to eventually accept peanuts… How can you make informed decisions as a player, agent or coach when it’s all just rumors and unscrupulous “reporters” who are really boosters making these dollar claims?

Everybody is suggesting they should stick to an offer with Deng, but then the numbers being thrown around seem trivial compared to the estimated budget.

If we have a pile of cash lying around and Freeman (probably our best player) asks for more money because Deng (probably our sixth man) got paid? Give it to him. <shrug>

Those numbers make a lot more sense… I estimated a few months ago that Freeman’s discounted rate would be $1.5 million, considering the budget numbers being thrown around.

I agree with dasher’s point about not overpaying for players and having to then go back and give your signed guys more money. But the numbers don’t add up. If we truly have $10 million in combined NIL and university direct payments, we should be able to pay Jerry Deng at least $1 million, probably more. And JJ must be getting at least $1 million, not the $500k other people have said. Freshman always come cheaper because, well, they’re unproven freshman and have already signed national letters of intent binding them to the school. The freshman shouldn’t cost more than $1 million total between the 4. That leaves $9 million for the rest of the roster. Maybe $8 million if Kiyan and Sadiq are getting premiums.

I agree with you. We should not give into these types of demands. We need to have our analysis to determine what a player is worth and stick to it. If we lose that player then so be it.

I'm not. I don't know what he wants. All I am saying that if we walked away from Deng, and I don't know that we did or didn't, because he wants what we think is too much money, we are doing the right thing. What if he wants more money than Freeman is getting? Just give it to him?

agreed. Unless a transfer is an absolute superstar you simply can't pay more for them than your leaders. That has to be a hard rule in business and this is a business.

But why would we pay Deng the same or more than Kingz? That opens a can of worms. At this point I think Dengs agent is shopping for the highest bidder. We are better off waiting it out. He hasn’t signed with someone else yet and if he does we will just have to look for a similar player.

UNLV just signed a 6-7 shooter. Mr Deng better act before all of the nice rooms in the inn are full.
Edit:Just looked up Dembele he is 6’8 250. Probably wouldn’t directly affect Deng but if UNLV is one of the main competitors they have spent decent money already. Dembele is their fifth transfer.

CBS ran what they called a well sourced story just a few days ago. They called it the $10M Club, meaning these 8 schools (only 8!) are the ones we've heard have at least that much money to spend. Those are the top schools.

Then there were another 10 schools with around $8M. We were not in that list. I think they listed us at around 25th, at the next tier below (i.e., 3rd tier, around $6-7M, I would guess, based on their reporting).

Obviously, people on this board know the actual number, but that's what's out in the press.

It's smart. Put yourself in a GM like position. You have a certain budget, your salary cap. You need to pay 10-12 guys. Let's say we have $7M to spend.

You got JJ and Donnie commanding the most dollars. Let's say we spent $3M on JJ and Donnie, combined.

Then you got Kyle, Kingz and the Georgia Tech kid next. The next 3 guys appear to have had prices in the $600-700K range each. That's around $2M more, for a total of $5M on five guys.

You had to probably give a McDonald's AA $100K, let say, for Saddiq White. Anthony, would we give him only $75K?

Those numbers might be low, but that leaves around $1.6M or so for Deng, a backup C, an extra wing and a 3rd PG.

So, what can we give Deng, $500K, without blowing the price of the guys we've already signed?

That leaves about $200-300K for the last few guys to fill out the roster.

Less, of course, if we paid more for the 2 main high schoolers.

I have to think we also spent something on Fennell ($50K?), but not much on Womack.

thats a good point...

but I also think this season is kinda make or break on many fronts...I dont think this is the typical year in the program coming off the worst record in my lifetime and many decades. with the coach on the hot seat. and the son of the greatest legacy player in program history coming...

i get what youre saying but I think it is "all-in" time

i also think we probably have a big boost in NIL with Carmelo heavily involved this year...that may allow for higher spending...so lets spend..we saw waht happened last year when we missed on first and second choices and had to settle for less. it didnt work out well.

if this year bombs...this will drop the program even lower than we've ever seen, imo...its do or die

i feel like the stars are alinged this year to get the prgram back to where it should be and we dont know when that will come again if we dont capitalize this year, basically...

furthermore, life isnt fair...idgaf if the payments to every player are perfectly logical...etc...it often happens in pro sports that players on miinumum salaries have gigantic stats...the intention is obviously there to pay people accordingly...but the players should just honestly want the best team they can and not get mad if their teammate is getting a couple extra bucks, imo...are they really that sensitive?

Yes in most cases it’s all about the Benjamin’s. If not there wouldn’t be tampering and bidding everyday. All you can do is the best you can with what you have and hope for the best. Robbing Peter to pay Paul, has never worked. Out

Yeah, and then JJ says hey, I want more now. And Kyle says wait one second, I want more. And Kingz says, hey, I'm, a starter and I want more. Meanwhile, back at the range, White says well, if everyone else is getting more...And on and on it goes. This is a business. And no smart business operates the way you suggest Syracuse basketball should act. There are other players besides Deng out there. we made a fair offer. So far, no one has given him what he wants. If they do, good for him. If not, he signs with us.

Whatever the number is, it should be held with a leeway to negotiate no more than a reasonable amount higher (perhaps 10%?). We cannot overpay for a role player, even if it’s a solid role player. Deng is a nice piece, but not a piece that solves the puzzle.

You pay Deng more than he is worth, sorry but other guys who already have a deal, though it is not right, could come back and ask for more or cause tension. There are so many players in the portal that we should have alternatives in mind and that we most likely are in conversation with.

He shows a lot of potential and having a 6’10” wing coming off the bench that can defend, rebound and has a developing offensive game seems like a great piece. He is also the reigning WAC freshman of the year but played at 6’7”-6’8”. I do think the step up in completion could be tough but I do think his game translates.

If we don’t get Deng, getting Bristow is a good addition.

If Lampkin does get the extra year, why not spend the money on him. Yes he is horrible defensively, but he and Kyle are a good match for offense/defense.

Not sure that’s the case. UVA was listed and they stated before that article came out they had around 9 million to spend total.
