Postgame Thoughts….NC State

Also... NC State had 8 scholarship players. FYI.

(And yes... Manny Bates is a talent and clearly missed).
Greenberg kept pining for Manny Bates like he was the 2nd coming of Hakeem Olajuwon. “If Manny Bates is playing, that pass doesn’t get made”, whatever the effff that means. Became tedious really quickly.
Btw- every time i hear “Manny Bates” I wanna ask about his little brother…Master Bates! Yes, I’m a juvenile.
I’ll show myself out.

Lots to like on defense? NCST was seriously undermanned last night and we gave them 82 points and 39 threes. Nice to get a win but that was one of the worst defensive games i have ever seen. I usually talk about how the wings get too high but lately I’ve noticed that Cole and Buddy get caught way too deep in the lane (even when the ball is opposite wing). It makes no sense they are that deep and they don’t get back out. Cole and Jimmy did it about 10 times last night

When NC State missed a shot, 27 times we got the defensive board, and we gave up only 11 offensive rebounds. How often do we do that?

Greenberg is really hard to listen to. I muted the game at multiple points.

Any real true Syracuse fan has to have think this team can continue to improve. Totally realize it has been a rough year so far but fans Have to believe!!!!

I like how they have started to look for and feed Jesse more consistently, particularly in the beginning of games. It was frustrating for me when they often ignored him earlier in the year. When he gets the ball, good things usually happen whether him scoring or showing his great vision to assist others in doing so.

Boys shot well and Cole had a breakout game. Buddy showing flashes of Tournament Buddy and Jesse continues to be the guy.

Saw more negative comments than I thought I would in the game thread about the win and the caliber of team NC State is. Having seen what this team has put up in 60 minutes of play this year, I am very happy with the win and hope we can keep this thing rolling! LGO!
two points-

1. NC State has gotta be the best 10-13 team in the country

they have talent

i wonder if its maybe the coach? never really been impressed with him

2. And I know there's basically no point in talking about refs...but I thought NC State was definitely getting the home cooking last night...NC state players were grabbing and holding on every single possession all game and SU was decidedly not...if the refs called handchecking like they were supposed to I think its a blowout win for SU

he had zero turnovers too...the offense can run through him more...and it should

Yeah Bates had a season ending shoulder injury Nov 12th, that's like us pining for Winfred Walton or Chris McCoullough. Really bad look for an announcer. He acted like the injury happened this week.

If he wills this team to end over .500 maybe we should double the size of his eventual statue. No doubt he needs to retire but we really do downplay the fact that he’s an all time great too much.

Win saturday and I’ll start to buy back in. Im hoping to attend again too

This was the style of basketball many people were longing for in recent years as SU was winning ugly, when some were even willing to sacrifice wins for a more entertaining product.
Eh…..kindve.

I kinda had the 2008-09 style of play in mind when I was thinking a team that can score that sucks on defense, personally.

I want fastbreaks, dunks, alley oops, good passing, guys getting to the rack, etc, as well as shooting, if I’m focusing on pure entertainment value.

But yeah, that’s a fair point that a lot of us were miserable during the rock fight bubble era, too.

Frustrating thing is last year we really weren’t that far away from having a team that could consistently compete on both ends of the court.

Nah. He recruited them and shaped this roster. There’s no restrictions holding him back.

He doesn’t get bonus points for semi-successfully overcoming the limitations that he put on himself.

Sure, but its another year closer to 60 straight winning seasons and his second reaching of 1,000 wins. His recruiting and management of the programs deteriorated to an inexcusable level, arguably, but his ability to adjust and win games (if thats what happens) should continue to be acknowledged.

I say all this still believing he should retire as soon as possible, as its 6-8 years overdue

He’s one of the all time great game coaches, for sure.

We beat NCS three times last year with Manny Bates playing.

Ha, I didn't have you or anyone in particular in mind. I think what it comes down to is that everyone really wants the the team to win playing a style they personally find aestetically pleasing. I would like the team to look like the Dr. J era NY Nets, but I also still would like a pony for Christmas.

Good point. This seems to be a point that eludes a lot of fans. Every team has some Jekyll and Hyde in them, and you don't know - or have a lot of control over - which one shows up until after the opening tip. Coaches, players and refs need to understand that before they will ever prosper. So you coach/play/ref with who showed up with and against whoever else showed up. The idea that you can predetermine what will happen based on your personal preferences has no connection to reality. Can you - and did you - do what it takes to win that game against that team on that night? Whether it's "the nice game" with dunks and downtown 3's, or a Pitt rock fight. Defense was bad last night? So what? They found a way to win. And win or lose, you take what you got, learn from it and get ready for the next game.

A caveat, I didn't watch, only live stats here. But what this all tells me is NCSt didn't adjust (read: hit the boards) when the ball stopped going in during the second half. For judging by the kvetching here, our D didn't get better, they just cooled down. But, that's basketball.
