Well that's kind of a thumb in the eye for all that returning talent from a 9-4 Orange Bowl team, the Nunes platoon notwithstanding. I'd have thought the previous decade would have bought some goodwill going into '99.

In a way preseason ranking don't matter but starting out ranked certainly makes it a lot easier to claw our way up the rankings. When you start off unranked, you're almost anonymous to voters until you do something to make them take notice. Now they'll pay attention from the start. It'll also be nice for recruits to see our scores in the "top 25" part of the ticker and likely a few more highlights making their way to the various sports shows.

It just hit me that only two ACC teams are ranked preseason. I'm really hoping some more ACC teams can have strong non-conference performances to help our SOS.

I hope they all suck, this way even if we lose to Clemson we can get a NY6 bid to the Orange Bowl. if we aren't the second highest ranked team in the conference then no Orange Bowl, last thing we need is Miami beating Florida and going 10-2 and ending up ranked ahead of us, just to use one example. if we go 13-0 we will go to the playoff no matter what the rest of the conference does so I say let them all blow and let's finish at least top 2.

I completely understand where you're coming from and I hope the team has your attitude, but as fans who have suffered for a very long time, this preseason ranking means a lot. It's exciting as a fan, and hopefully we'll welcome Clemson to the Dome with a top 15 match up and a sold Gameday crowd that spent the entire day getting pumped for the game.

Word. This matters. And it’s nice to be relevant!

Isn't that just a carry over from last year?

The only team that impacts would be a one loss Clemson. If SU were to go 13-0 that wouldn't be the factor, for a one loss SU, it just doesn't matter.

I don't think it matters because Clemson is so high.

Plus, SOS is different in college football. It matters kinda for the playoffs. That's about it.

While the rest of the conference does, indeed, need to step it up, there were 5 AGV's: Miami #29; VPI #32; UVa #37; Duke #44; FSU, #47. I'm surprised BC wasn't one of the AGVs.

Awesome - it does matter for one reason...

If we were 9-3 starting at 22, we probably finish in the Top-25. If we’re 9-3 and started outside the voting, chances are we very likely wouldn’t finish as high.

Obviously a ton of variables, but you’ll finish higher if you start higher given the same record typically.

Well, actually 2 reasons, 20 something yr old players think it’s really cool. Good for them.

I get almost giddy seeing us ranked. My gosh, think about that disaster against Nova in 2014. I had convinced myself that Shafer was a good coach...and then we needed a ST trick play to beat Nova. Imagine telling yourself that in 5 years we would be the 2nd highest ranked team in the ACC.

I get almost giddy seeing us ranked. My gosh, think about that disaster against Nova in 2014. I had convinced myself that Shafer was a good coach...and then we needed a ST trick play to beat Nova. Imagine telling yourself that in 5 years we would be the 2nd highest ranked team in the ACC.

I still have no idea how that Nova kicker shanked that straight-on like 25 yard field goal to win the game.

I remember the kid who caught the TD on the fake FG started dancing...which was so far opposite from what I felt should’ve been the reaction. I was thinking more of a relieved, thank God, we were so lucky not to lose to those scrubs, we got a TON of work to do or this year will be horrible, now take a deep sigh and get the hell off the field.
