Richie Incognito suspended by team for bullying

Golic came across as a tool imo. I don't claim to know what goes on or the the mentality of an NFL locker room, I only played football and basketball in high school, however this is the NFL not Oz. He kept describing standing up to the bully and the need for more established players to have your back...ummm thats describing prison.

Jonathan Martin, a 2 year player, is going to stand up to a psychopath in Richie Incognito who by some idiotic stupidity was put on the leadership council!? Then after Incognito beats him down, he gets to deal with that plus whoever else was bullying him. Just because someone got a good education and isnt a toughguy wannabe doesnt mean he should have to put up with that or prove his worth by punching Incognito in the mouth.

I heard another former player call Martin weak minded and soft because he did not bust Incognito in the head with a helmet or something. I don't think it is a real surprise that guys who make a living off of violence cannot understand a guy like Martin who isn't violent in the way they are.

I'm proud of this board. 17 responses and not one stupid mention of the "pussification of America" It doesn't fit in these situations, yet I've been hearing that phrase surrounding this matter for the last 3 days.

The pussification of america only applies to articles where a mom comes out and claims bullying because her son's football team got their stuff stomped to the tune of 100-0 (or something like that). And yes, this happened.

If that's racism than every player in the NFL is racist, and every person ive ever played football and basketball with in high school or pick up games at the park is racist. I've heard the word "Cracker" and "Whiteboy" thrown around by black people nonstop, and ive also seen white people say the N-word during games. I don't personally, but the people who do, I dont consider racist...its the culture. Just like people who use gay slurs in locker rooms arent exactly homophobic.

Plenty of smart, easy going guys in the NFL that can separate violence off the field versus on it. Also plenty of idiots like Incognito as well. Martin probably a guy that wants to do his job and go home and not have to deal with behavior that of a 14 year old. Imagine that, I don't blame him one bit, guy has a degree from Stanford, probably feels he will either hook up elsewhere or move on.

You said "every person you've ever played football and basketball with" uses racial language, except you. So you're the only person who doesn't?

Not sure what you've been reading or watching but everyone on Sportscenter that aired around 7AM called him a racist.
Not to the extent Riley Cooper got it though...that was insane the amount of heat he got.

I exagerrated a bit. Should read, a fair amount...

OK - so folks who use gay slurs aren't homophobic and white guys who use the N word aren't racists. Got it.

So a guy leaves a threatening abusive voicemail in which he calls him the N word (in other words it ain't playing some pickup game with the brothers) - and you don't think That is racist? Come on.

If you want to live in your little PC bubble, then fine. Have you ever played a pick-up basketball game in a predominantly black area with a mix of black and white people, most of which are from rougher areas? I only use that as my example because its the closest thing I can think of to an NFL locker room that ive been in. Judging by how offended you are by everything in life, my guess is you'd be quiting football quicker than Jonathan Martin.

I hadn't seen that video and if its a pattern, then yea it turns into racism.

I think there are different levels of racism. Do I think he's on par with 1960s Birmingham Police Chief Bull Connor, no I don't. But when you call a black person the N-word, I don't see any way around it. You're racist on some level.

Poor Chris Rock. Racist. Who knew?

He drunkenly screamed that he would fight every ****** at a Kenny Chesney concert. Not to get into that all over again on here, but that's a much different situation than messing around with your friends on a basketball court. Though since Cooper had a good game on Sunday, the media has seemed to come around to the idea that he was a victim.

Cooper seems like a racist scumbag to me, but not nearly as much of a racist scumbag as Incognito.

I don't know that what you are arguing is the same thing that happened between Martin and Incognito. I have a lot of the same experience that you do in regards to playing basketball at the park but for the most part it was always good-natured ribbing even if it was what some would call un-pc like talk.

There is just something more hateful in the Martin case. It is very clear (to me at least) that this was not two guys talking trash to each other. There was simply too much venom in some of it to pass it off as locker room kind of stuff.

Oh I agree, but I think its more the fact Incognito is a complete and has some issues with Martin than it is racism. I understand he used the "N-word" but it's also pretty apparant that other people were involved, were they all white players picking on Martin? I just think it must be pretty difficult to be a white racist in the NFL. Riley Cooper was really close to Jeremy Maclin by all accounts, if he was truly racist wouldnt he dissassociate with someone like that? To me, and its unfortunate, but the NFL and jock culture in general is the one place where you'll hear white people say the n-word, black people call white people crackers, and homophobic slurs be thrown around and its not necessarily a reflection on rampant racism and homophobia.

I've played in hundreds of mixed-race pickup basketball games in my life, and I can't personally remember hardly any instances of racial talk, joking or otherwise. Guys just play. Maybe my situation has been unique.

God my phins are phucked.

Wait, let me get this straight: A professional athlete turned out to be a complete with no ability to display any understanding of the world outside a football locker room? *gasp*

The point is, no matter how long it has been going on ..and no matter how "effective" (or ineffective) it is in developing "brotherhood" a person with a job should be able to go to work without having to deal with harassment. Would this type of behavior be acceptable in your place of work? The NFL is first and foremost a business. To expect and allow this type of behavior from its employees (players) is not only bad for those who are victimized, but it actually is an insult to everyone in the league as they are basically told "look, we cant expect you animals to behave like normal humans..we get you are here for your animal like powers"

I never understood the gratification someone got from hazing. I played sports in high school and the entire medical training (from med school through fellowship) is very much like a totem pole where you are humiliated down the chain and then humiliate the next guy as you move up. I took my fair share of ribbing..but never anything too bad..probably because there were just easier targets ...but I never understood what the bullies got out of it ? Was their life made better picking on the new guy? the weak guy? if you want to prove something go pick on someone at your level..ohh.what? doesnt happen? exactly...because they are too weak to go there themselves.

I played lacrosse in college and the tried to force me to run naked outside. Not sure how that would have helped the tam but I chose to say no. I think they respected my decision. To say no more than if I had done it.

It's ironic, because I feel like frat and jock culture tend to be somewhat homophobic by nature, but in so many instances, the hazing techniques are just overwhelmingly homoerotic.

Well Incognito's voicemail supposedly said he was going to xxx in his mouth. Really? Who says that?
