Your assumption is correct, he's unlikely to ever see the field here.
What's the knock on him?

It does happen quite often and if Collins can't get to at least being slightly below average, they have to probably move on in another game or 2. I don't really think Angeli will be back until summer camp and it would be nice if we know who the real #2 is by the end of the year.
Qb recruiting is a real gamble, obviously they knew they had a problem after spring ball. I think it's safe to say Williams and most likely Collins ain't it. Carney way too early to tell, maybe he will get some snaps if Collins continues to struggle. Carney had been here since the spring. With decent QB play we really should beat Pitt, UNC, BC. I don't think Collins will improve enough to be decent this year, if ever. And I doubt he stays to be QB2 for next year. So I don't see the upside in playing him past SMU, assuming we see more of the same.
With 2 weeks to prep for Pitt it is a great chance to get Carney or Williams up to speed. And it keeps the possibility of winning in play. I think if you play Collins vs Pitt, you can throw away any outside chance at a Bowl (again assuming SMU is the same Collins we have seen thus far). Also by moving on from Collins you can get your QB2 the next two seasons up to speed.
If Carney and Williams aren't any good, then what the heck was Fran thinking originally going into this season with a QB room of Collins, Carney, Williams?
That said I don't think Fran will make a change before UNC, and maybe not even then. There is a real possibility he can go from 13-4 to 13-12.
The defense does not need to be shutdown in my opinion, really it never has been yet we've stacked alot of wins. From day 1 of the Fran Brown era the defense has been reliant on the offense to spark them or wake them up. They're fine usually playing from behind or with a lead but not if the offense is bad.The problem is that we don’t have a shut down defense. If you’re not able to counter punch, then you’re constantly playing from behind which just makes things worse for a QB with challenges.
If we had a shut down defense then you could white knuckle to wins with Rickie but we need to come up with someone who can lead the offense to put points on the board.
If we have any hope of making a bowl this year I don’t think we can afford to dig a hole against Pitt. If we’re coming out of SMU 3-3 then Pitt is a must win.

I’ve met Bootsy. Obviously a very cool dudeDon’t forget Eileen Collins.

People will raise a stink that Williams has never played etc but clearly the staff has had no issue recruiting over him a couple times. Just the way it goes some times. Writing is on the wall there but maybe they give him and Carney both some run
I think everyone needs to take a step back. Bad interception on Drive 1. Bad decision not to throw the ball away after Yasin's long run. But, if Yasin follows his blockers on the leap run, rather than cut left, he gets a TD run. If the Cook fumble had ignited the defense, rather than deflate it, we are still in the game. Second Cook fumble. And more. This was a team loss. ST play was terrible on returns.
I get the frustration over Rickie... but we have had a lot of worse talent back there over the years. Don McPherson did not compete for a Heisman before he was a senior, fyi.
I think we keep rolling Rickie out there for a few more weeks. Give him SMU and Pitt. If he cannot show progression by then, then perhaps we make a switch to try to beat Georgia Tech and UNC. But if there is a way to preserve Carney's redshirt, then I think that is the right thing to do. Williams should be QB3 until we get to game 10. And games 10 and 11 seem to be bad places to start a freshman.
Good post. This is exactly where I am, also.I think everyone needs to take a step back. Bad interception on Drive 1. Bad decision not to throw the ball away after Yasin's long run. Referring to carney or jakhari?Your assumption is correct, he's unlikely to ever see the field here.
For those of us who remember Bill Hurley, Todd Norley, Mike Kmetz, Billy Scharr, etc... football is a funny game. We have been far worse QBs than Rickie carve us up. Rickie may carve up some team he has no business doing that to. Not predicting a win... just saying hold on a bit before jumping off any tall buildings.People keep posting about his first drive. That was an outlier. It took dook that long to figure Rickie out and that he's a one look wonder. They shut him down. There easily could have been more interceptions. If he is unable to look off defenders, he needs to be replaced.

Ah okay, makes sense. ThanksFrom what I have heard he just hasn't progressed to the point he could play at this level. Has not looked good in practice and I am not surprised Carney is ahead of him.
I looked at his high school espn recruitng profile. They had him listed as a pocket passer.Just Google it, that's not true
Forgot about Peach and Christodulu. We had some lean years at QB. And some lean year QBs still won a few games here and there.Bob Mitch, Steve Peach, Greg Christodoulu, etc...
I think we give Ricky the SMU game and if he performs similar to the way he played vs Duke. Have an open QB competition during the bye week. That way if a switch is going to be made at least they'd have a little more practice time to get ready. Would rather have a new qb start at home vs Pitt after a bye week, than on the road at Ga Tech.I think everyone needs to take a step back. Bad interception on Drive 1. Well, how about working in plays for Carney during the Pitt game, like how Marrone used Nassib when Paulus was QB1? "Rickie is our QB this year, stop asking" during the bye week... and then give some plays to Carney to see if he can move the team. Maybe even a drive if Rickie falters. Not sure how Pitt can devote time to preparing for a running QB with no tape on him at all and no expectation of him playing absent injury. And then, post-Pitt, future teams have to prepare for Carney and Rickie...I think we give Ricky the SMU game and if he performs similar to the way he played vs Duke.
