Unless you are a police officer, you cannot do it legally. If the person volunteers to be handcuffed, that might be a different situation, but if they refuse, you CANNOT do it.

I work security in Vegas, and you can legally detain.
In nevada you can do it for many reasons including, stealing, trespassing, fraud, cheating.

If he did in fact get escorted out of Lord & Taylor for allegedly shoplifting and was let go, he MAY in fact still face some penalty from the University, regardless of whether he was actually charged with anything.

I knew what you were referencing, just making a point about how cavalier security people can be sometimes...particularly if this was MCW or any public figure. Physically and openly parading him through the mall is not good for one's public image, especially if wrongly accused/apprehended.

Oh no doubt. Security employees can be famously stupid. While some do their jobs... it's not uncommon to see others pretending to be cops ... complete with "perp-walks" (for a $5 item), 'rubber-hose' treatment in the back room, etc..

I agree. My point is we don't even know if he was questioned, escorted out, etc. We don't know if the pic is real. We don't know diddley.
