sorry but coaching is a problem

Yup. My feeling as well. I mean there are some scheme issues offensively one can certainly criticize so I don’t necessarily think that aspect is “ridiculous.” It is like pulling teeth trying to often generate more movement especially off the ball. They DO want more movement often because the players and Boeheim talk about it after games over and over. Stagnant this, stagnant that. More movement, more movement. But, in terms of bench and wearing players down there literally is no other choice. But, yeah, we need the current players to improve next season and not to be on the damn bubble again.

I don't consider all criticism to be ridiculous. But the offense has looked better since that Virginia game so it isn't like he hasn't tried to address the issues.

I'd love to be one of those teams with crisp passing and scripted sets. But that's not him. It really hasn't been our offense ever. But when JB's offense works, it really is a fun brand of basketball.

JB's offense works when he has high level talent. It's a "freelance" kind of thing. Which great talents take advantage of and limited players get exposed.

when I made that post 4 months ago it was meant to be at least in part hyperbolic, and it was before we played a game. brissett, sidibe, dolezaj, moyer, and Thorpe were complete unknowns. chukwu looked like a guy that could maybe play 10 minutes after what he did last year. we thought battle could score but didn't have a clue what to expect from howard. after watching the team play through the non-conference season I thought this was a tournament team, and I think others agreed. we had a couple of unexpected wins but also some poor losses (SBU, ND, WF, GT). to start the season I didn't think we were a tourney team, after watching the team for two months I thought we were. now we essentially have to beat UNC to get in, but apparently I am the big idiot

You made the post on November 6th..there is no way it was hyperbolic at the time.

In fact, given all the uncertainties you list above, it was a perfectly reasonable, rational statement.

It was also perfectly reasonable to start thinking, as we proceeded through the non-conference portion of the schedule, to start thinking that SU could be a tournament team.

Then we lose Thorpe.
Sidibe is reduced to spot duty on one leg
Washington goes down
Moyer goes down
Chukwu is playing with a bad back on Sidibe's other leg...

Yet, despite all that adversity, we still enter the ACC tournament with a reasonable chance to make the tourney if we can beat Wake and figure out a way to beat Carolina.

And, after all that, NOW you decide that coaching is a huge problem????

Now, THAT is irrational and unreasonable.

You drones on this hoops board are followers. Its comical . 1 NC delivered by melo. Numerous shortcomings in the tourney ousted by lower seeds, a vast majority of wins in the dome against the who's who of NYS mid majors.

Truly damning of Jim Boeheim that he needed elite players to win a National Title. Its well documented that Coach K won five National Titles with squads of Billy Celuck and Josh Wright- caliber players.

It's the most ridiculous argument ever that Boeheim needed elite players to win a championship. No s***.

The sanctions were for BS reasons. Why should we knock JB when UNC gets off scot-free?

Weird, I seem to recall him agreeing to the succession plan after the sanctions before he was able to wiggle his way out of it.

There's really no use arguing about most of this. He's certainly not going anywhere for the next few years with Buddy coming, but it could be a real rough exit like Bowden if we are still stuck in bubble city for the next 2 or 3 years.

I don't know. "He's lost to lower seeds several times" and "Most of his wins are against cupcakes" are pretty ridiculous too.
Don't forget "he never makes in-game adjustments."

This analysis shows JB 12th since 1985 in NCAA performance based on seed. Ahead of K, and Roy.

Thanks for the hard numbers. I think sometimes fans' bias interferes with their perception - memory of a 15 losing to a 2 blocks out all those times he took a 5 seed to the second weekend (or something similar). Plus he got off to a rough start with some upsets (Iowa, Charlotte, Navy) that built a narrative. But on the whole, Boeheim hasn't underachieved in the tournament. (I don't think Krzyzweski has, either, I just think his teams are chronically overseeded so it's impossible to play to seed over time.)

Criticism on the roster management, half court offense are legitimate.

JB has slipped in roster management.
He has let players declaring shock him. Instead of always having a plan B. We should never expect a player to stay any longer than a year if they are good.

The type of offense we run is so basic. Fran Fraschila was kind when he called one of our games and said our offense is dependent on the individual.

A program like Syracuse should not struggle to find a big who can post.
Don’t give me Diagne or sanctions. We took Chukwu, Chino, Roberson.

Coleman should have been recruited over after the microfracture surgery.
Sidibe has potential but he is hurt now.
We need a big who can post. We don’t have a big recruit right now outside of Bazley who isn’t going to post consistently.

Your point being?

My opinion, and my opinion only, if we had the 10 man roster we started with this past summer and not had soooo many injuries, we would have won a few more games and been in the 3-6 ACC battle behind UVA and Duke.

I would offer they should've beaten Wake, UND, and GTech with the players they had available and
they'd then be in the running for the 4-6 seed, in addition to being a lock for the NCAAs.

And a quick look at stats ... wake shoots 47% from deep and SU' big three goes 16-42; against GTech, big 3 go
12-44; against UND, the 3 go 15-39, and get killed on boards, losing to a team without its best two players.
Additionally, that NCSU game was there for the taking. I think coaching is part of the problem in that a) "get
out on the shooters" and b) "when you're off, stop shooting so much" could be reinforced. I mean, SU let a guy w
RED HAIR go 5-8 from deep. How hard can it be to find that guy? The part I dislike, a pass into the paint with a
kick out fools SU a lot. If you're conceding the midrange shot, stop collapsing leaving a shooter open. The lack
of any semblance of a post offense is ridiculous. Brissette's being guarded by a 5'7" kid? POST UP!

But while I get annoyed with the coaching, JB doesn't play, and the players gotta execute this stuff out also. You
can't lose a shooter w red hair, and you can't let a guy who couldn't clear a local phonebook own you on the glass,
as UND did.

if i'm reading this table correctly it's telling us that of his 48 wins we were favored or expected to win 43 of them ? that means we've had only 5 upset victories ? and this chart really doesn't tell us how many times we've been upset . am i reading this right ?

No. Click the link below the chart and the article explains.

Should also be noted that we’ve made a final four as a 10 seed since that article was written in 2015.

It says based on seeds we should have won 43 games but won 48.

If nobody else moved, that would put JB in 6th. But I’m sure a few others may have been on the plus side that year. But he most assuredly moved higher than 12th.

so you're mad at me for giving an emotional "take" after a bad loss. get in line

I saw you liked this post but Hak, this would certainly qualify as one of those posts that I would go after.

Precious little substance as well as being factually incorrect (vast majority of JB's wins are certainly not against NY State mid-majors)...

Lol, then? Who are they against? Ok, Conn, jersey, mass , mid Atlantic teams?

Oh come on, , most Cuse homers admit that we rode Melo to that ship DON'T get me wrong , i grew up with the big east and JB battling JT, RM, and LC in the Big East. I get it. I loved it. Thing is if we are a top 10 team over the last 30 years , you would never know it bc as a Cuse fan, we have witnessed alot of ugly hoops
