Summer Workouts

I look forward to an increase in blocks from Bell in the normal course of the defense. He had only one of that sort in this highlight package.

It was rare that he just went straight up as the secondary defender and got the block. Most of his are the come from behind sort, which are spectacular, but rare.

It feels like he has the physical attributes to be a pretty good defender. So far not so much. Hopefully the coaching changes or another year of experience (or something) sparks improvement in Bell's defense.

Bell has NBA size and an NBA level skill in his shooting. I think he has a legit chance to get drafted if he can add to his defense/rebounding - and with his athletic ability, that is almost all effort based.

Expecting Chris Bell to magically be interested in playing real defense

Bell needs to have observed how Cole Swider didn’t stick to an NBA roster despite being an amazing shooter. Teams need to see that he can stop the other guy in a 1-on-1 situation. Chase-down blocks are flashy, but I don’t think that’s going to be enough for the draft.

I'd be really surprised if Bell gets drafted, particularly considering he is already old by NBA standards. He's an athletic kid but his lateral movement/quickness isn't real good. His best bet is to develop into an all-around scorer and at least a decent team defender. Rooting for him and think he can be a good college player. His ability to put the ball in the basket is impressive -- his ability to catch and shoot quickly with a high release point is pretty special.

It's the instinctual part of the game on both ends that desperately needs improvement. Moving without the ball, shooting off screens, helping teammates defensively, getting into passing lanes, knowing what the opponent wants to do with the ball, being physical and fighting for loose balls/rebounds, creating offense with his passing ... he's largely been a standstill, spot-up shooter who occasionally gets a fast-break opportunity or chase-down block.

Bell just doesn’t come across as a kid who’s ever had to scrap and claw for anything. He plays with confidence on the offensive edge, but lacks the grit and fight on the defensive end and the boards. If he’s going to make it in the NBA it’s going to have to be as a 3& D type, and right now he’s lacking the D and the intangibles NBA teams are looking for in role players. Here’s hoping he develops a different mindset/intensity this year and becomes a better overall player. He is extremely talented and has all the tools. If he doesn’t I could see him losing some minutes to guys like Westry (if healthy), Taylor, or even Davis who reportedly are more willing to mix it up on the defensive end and do the little things.

Agreed. I can't see Bell getting drafted. But I could see him possibly making the end of an NBA roster the way Brissett did. Bell's quick release is an NBA level skill. I still think the fact he shot 42% from 3 and had maybe one of the 5 best shooting years in SU history when you combine percentage and number of made 3s, and he did it with no other shooters on the roster and teams knowing they couldn't leave him alone, is a special accomplishment that is underrated by most.

But Bell will make a good living playing basketball, even if he doesn't make the NBA. He does the one thing extremely well he shoots and every overseas team needs someone who can put the ball in the basket.

Yup. Fans have given other players more credit for doing less.

Yeah, no.

Would it surprise you to know that 16 Seniors were drafted last year?
yes, actually. lol. Good point. So maybe he's got a better shot than i think. I'm still a bit skeptical but I'm rooting for him and hope he gets there.

That's the thing with "shooters" trying to make NBA squads. You can't just be a sharpshooter. It's not just the 3pt percentage that wins jobs. You have to contribute elsewhere on the court. Either defense, or playmaking. Guys like Dalton Knecht and Reed Sheppard, for example—i don't know how good they are as defenders, but you watch them offense and they're more dynamic than just spot-up shooters.

Bell has enough athleticism to do more. I hope it's not our system that makes him look lazy/disinterested in doing other things. If it's handles that need work to get him to the next level, i hope he's been working on that. Mostly, though, i think people just have inherent characters. The "motor" is a major characteristic. Bell's a specialist who will hopefully expand his game/role, though i think we have so many guys at a similar talent/effectiveness level (in different roles/aspects) that i don't see Bell as being challenged enough. We may not need him to be significantly different than what he was.

In no way was I saying he is good enough to be drafted. I was just saying his age will be less of a factor than many think.

How does he compare to Cole Swider?
