Summer Workouts

One thing that is interesting with our portal additions this year is that outside Eddie, they are all 4th year guys (Jyare had a redshirt year at Providence first) and you do tend to see guys in smaller programs really hit their stride in that 4th year before leaving for their 5th year since the portal era has been the Covid era to date as well.

For instance had J Carlos stayed and averaged 14/ 7 ast and shot 37 pct from 3 he would likely be a top 75 transfer as a 5th year guy. Lucas Taylor with a bigger 4th year could have ranked much higher as well. So we are bringing in guys a year before that “money” year so to speak as we start now to move away from the CoVid 5 yr guys. It makes projections all that more difficult now vs what to expect with the 5th year guys.

we saw last year in ncabb that most of the best teams were the oldest. hopefully that is a trend that carries through to this year's orange. JB the analyst called it out during NC state's run in the ACCT...as he correctly predicted \nc state would do well in the big tourney. seems red was listening

i think people are sleeping on this team just bc these guys arent household names (yet) and the team has been down for a while...and bc the general public/talking heads havent yet caught on how much age/experience is decisive in this era (bc of how few teams actually have it)

Get the kid a girlfriend, she'll help him out.
First you get the haircut.
Then you get the girlfriend.

I’m holding out that JJ can be really good this year on both sides of the court, but I also thought Judah would learn to shoot 3s last year so what do I know.

JJ seems like he’s built different than Judah in terms of both how much he works to get better and willingness to be coached. Hopefully that combination does him well for being much improved along with not having the same negative influences around him all the time( that goes for all the returning guys )

Another thing is that even since HS he has that ability that he can get into rhythm and heat up quickly putting points on the board in a hurry. That didn’t ever show up at ND but there were a few games we saw him do that in short stretches last year. It’s one thing I really like about his game because it’s something that’s been a skillset in the past from good backcourts over the years.

I'm ok with Starling's scoring... He could be more efficient, but he's a pretty solid threat to score. Having three other good scorers on the team will give him the openings he needs.

I really hope he shows a little more versatile of a floor game, though. His PER was 8th on the team (7th discounting Nico Ruffin, who made the very most of his 4 minutes played last season) at only 12.6. Similarly, his BPM was 7th at a very low .1

These low per minute rate stats are a result of his lack of an overall floor game. His assists, steals, and blocks are almost non existent. His defense is below average.

Improvement in these areas would made a lot of difference.

I think his floor game improving is naturally something we’ve already litigated needing improvement. I was really focused on his ability as a primary option and what I like about his ability in that role in terms of what we have seen and what we know works in cbb.

Any reports anyone wants to share? Anyone surprise the coaches by being better or worse than expected? Here's what I think I know:

-Carlos is shooting better than expected
-The transfers collectively exceeded expectations
-Coaches aren't counting on Westry
-Lucas was one of the better defenders this summer

Is JJ's hitch gone? Is Moore able to defend and is he looking like a serious contributor or is he a year away? Does Donnie look ready or is he still a potential guy? Did Bell expand his game at all? Has Cuffe improved?
