Thamels Has Babers Top UMD Option

As of last year, the perception of Syracuse football, as a program in 2018, was not good. Dino has turned it around perception wise in a big way but to say we're better than Maryland in 2018 is not accurate, national wise. All these jobs are middle class at end of day. My assumption is Dino will only jump to a upper echelon gig where he'll get paid and his gypsy assistants who follow him around. Those guys have families and if he can get each of them 400-600k at a school like USC he'll go. It's hard to keep the troops down. That's my biggest issue with SU paying up. The BoT is not gonna write blank checks for the secondary coach at SU. They may go to the extremes for Dino (and i even question that) but they will not break bank for the entire staff that puts the operation closer to red.

The school is making a huge push to become relevant again academically. That is the agenda for the BoT. the sports are important but not to the detriment of the academics
Maryland has 3 baked in losses most years Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State.
Syracuse has 2 baked in losses most years Clemson and Florida State.

A good year at Maryland is 8-4.
A good year at Syracuse is 8-4.

Penn State can snap their fingers and take whomever they want in Maryland’s backyard.

Maryland is not a good football job. Syracuse is no worse.
Maryland doesn’t have a blank check either for football.
Dino would be STUPID to go from Syracuse to Maryland barring them giving him a Jimbo Fisher contract.

To think going from Syracuse to Maryland is an upgrade is too let Greg Robinson and Scott Shafer era football cloud your mind.
Maryland had James Franklin locked up as their HCIW but that fanbase didn’t think he was good enough.
He left for Vanderbilt and showed those fans think they are better than they are.

The only problem with the SS hire was that for 2 years is a row, all of his QB's were injured. So you think Dino would be having a season like the current one if he was down to a walk-on QB?
That wasn't the ONLY problem. Let's be real.

You are looking at this wayyyy tooo myopically. He isn't gonna take the job but his agent (and he has one and it's for this reason) wants to drum up some Dino buzz to get him ultimately paid the absolute most money at SU.

If he signs tomorrow an extension and pulls his name from any of these rumors i'll be the happiest guy alive. There's a reason Frank Beamer and Paul Pasqualoni never were rumored to go elsewhere. They didn't want their name out there to be going elsewhere (when both of these guys were the hot candidate types)
We have a word on our board, "Beamering". It's the process of allowing yourself to be courted by another school (UNC in that case) to be their head coach in order to get a pay raise from your present school, when you had absolutely no intention whatsoever of leaving in the first place.

"Don't pay attention to that rumor. Coach X is just Beamering that school for a raise."

The ONLY thing Maryland can offer that Syracuse can't is silly money. Under Armour crazy money.

Maryland is to the Big10 what Syracuse is to the ACC. Kind of a ceiling of how high one can go really, but Maryland if it wants to break the bank really could to lure someone.

Not saying it will happen but its the one big difference between the schools.

General fund is siphoning 8 million + from AD revenue. Pay the coaches. Invest in the program. Full stop.

My experience is that they all take it too seriously.

You’re comparing national perception of the two schools. That’s not what Dino is comparing. He’s comparing what he believes he’s building towards here (I think he’s got a finger on the pulse of the program) with a job that is basically a peer school (in financial duress amid a scandal.) If the reports about his relationship with Wildhack are true that trumps Maryland’s dumpster fire situation.

Money and fan support may be enough to lure him away. But it won’t be to there lol

i agree w u.

The AD isn't some holding company in the corporate sense. The athletic dept is there to fund the athletic dept. if they decide to take money to fund other projects w cash that's the MO of a private school. There are rooms in Maxwell that say "this was funded by the 1992 Fiesta Bowl". To me that's a great thing if you are an alumni of the school.

I want the AD to run in the black and to dividend (if that's the right word in academia) money to the school to support other endeavors. that to me is a healthy college. As i've said, if the school goes full SEC and spends stupid money for a coach to stay it won't pay off ultimately. The northeast schools have caps on what they can do in these arms races. we've never competed vs, say Georgia, in football budgets and that's ok. We can compete on the field still

Well, Beamer's name did show up from time to time and as for Coach P, while he was very good at SU, he was, more or less, very similar to any number of available coaches in college. A solid guy, knowledgeable coach, but not someone people were clamoring over. It was also a very different time period in college football. The salaries weren't astronomical, schools didn't fire coaches after 2 seasons (other than maybe ND) and coaches didn't jump from job to job chasing $$$.
I don't think you can compare the current environment to the 80s and 90s.

Schools that pay that kind of crazy money have a good portion of the contract funded by the booster club.

Donate.

I dont expect to compete with the biggest of the big teams. Eventually, he will likely go. But it would be nice to elevate him into the $3.5-4 mill range, enough to keep him here for 5-6 years instead of 3-4, building a deeper foundation, establishing better recruiting and better assistant coaches, leaving the program better positioned to keep moving forward, rather than cratering.

Prince Talal, worth 19billion dollars, member of the Saudi Royal Family AND GRADUATE OF SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY. Someone needs to see if he'll be our UA guy

Ah. Know the name and story. Just didn’t know what he looked like.

169 posts from a reporter making an unsubstantiated guess. I'm going to enjoy being #19.

Thought I read Dino received a little bump$$ , last year.

If his goal is to compete for a Natty, we're #19, with the future being brighter.

Attendance is on the rise. New dome. New Nike? Deal... There is incentive and investment to protect, with increased revenue. Dino gets paid.

Next year, the board is up in arms for our initial #11 ranking, based on SOS. 45k chanting "Our House", every Saturday.

HCDB, JB, and Wildhack cut the ribbon on the new dome, on college game day, in 2020.

The End.

Kevin Plank has stopped the money flow.

There are not going to be a lot of jobs opening up after this season, at least "better" jobs (i.e., more $, more winning, or ideally both). I could potentially see Babers leaving for four spots that may come open:
  1. USC - Big $; big prestige; easiest path to a national championship he may ever get. I could see him being a top candidate, but not the top candidate. We can't match what they have to offer, so why worry about it?
  2. Auburn - Big $; pretty big rep (2nd tier of elites); stuck in the most difficult sub-conference in the Country. I think he would be a second tier choice for them. If they offer though, he'll go. We can't match what they have to offer, so why worry about it?
  3. Purdue - Assuming Brohm leaves for Louisville (assuming Louisville even opens up). A lateral move on it's face. Brohm has them trending in the right direction. They'd offer more money, but i think we'd match. System would be more difficult to implement there, but doable. Easier path to a NC game. I could see him going there, but its more likely he would hold out for something better in a year or two.
  4. UNC - Kinda like Purdue. Better recruiting base. Easier path to a NC game. If he goes there, he's Judas to me.

Isn't that the guy that MBS had hung upside down in a hotel room and beaten until he gave up a few billion? Not as bad as what happened to Kashoogi, but still.

Dino Babers is NOT STUPID.

Anyone who takes the Maryland job is either stupid, desperate or insanely confident in his ability to do the near impossible.

Therefore, no matter how much money they throw at him, he knows it's a fool's errand that will almost certainly wreck his coaching career.

Maryland had a hard time competing in the ACC. Competing in the eastern division of the B1G is a pipe dream for Maryland, Smart people, like Dino, don't volunteer for suicide missions.

I don't care who they get at Maryland. They are going to be fighting Rutgers to stay out of last place in that division for decades and the stands are going to stay half-filled.

I do have a suggestion for Maryland, however,

They need someone who has no scruples what-so-ever. A coach who lies to everyone all the time and who bullies and leverages every situation. The obvious candidate is Greg Schiano.

Kevin Plank has stopped the money flow.

Plank's no dummy. He gets the concept of good money after bad.

Besides, his money given to St. John's high school has actually produced some results.
