The QB's

I'm not sure why he would transfer? If Tommy gets a better pocket presence, he could do damage with his arm. I know our OL has been inconsistent the last 2 seasons but some of those sacks are on Tommy too.
I hope Tommy comes back. But his Dad has blamed almost every part of the SU football program as to why Tommy isn’t lightning it up. Do you think he will automatically say in his last year “yeah I need better pocket presence” ?

It might be better for him personally to go the route of Joe Flacco and throw for 4k yards at Delaware, that way he can blame SU for his stats here. His Dad has said “only scrubs would transfer to SU” and we “have no sales pitch”. That kind of tells me what they think of the program.

If only “pocket presence” was a teachable trait, but it really isn’t. It is one of those intangible’s, and pretty much a must have if you’re any QB worth a darn, especially at this level. TD is 4 years in, and I haven’t seen any proof to date that he possesses this trait/intangible. And, without it, I don’t care what kind of arm he has, he has no chance at the next level. IMO, I’ve seen more of this trait/intangible in Morgan, as well as composure, the past two weeks than Tommy has shown in the past two years.

The OP speaks to a time when our recruiting was very different. It took a deep decline in the back half of P’s tenure and settled in the range where it is now. I think Dino’s classes are a touch better but we have to ask what’s holding us back and what can mitigate it?

Start with the reality.

This is no where near the worst QB situation SU has had. But it aint great. And the recruiting for years has been mostly a bunch of unknowns other than Devito and to a less extent Dungey who over played his recruiting rankings. There was a time when SU brought in several QBs a year and were able to move the ones that didnt win the job because they were all football players, not just passers. In back to back seasons SU once brought in 6 QBs that were all well regarded . Larry Tyger, Keith Downing and Phil Nash were followed by Kevin Johnson, Jason Poles and Donovan McNabb. I believe those last 4 saw NFL fields (Nash has NFL page w no info?). They were more than dual threat QBs. They were football players recruited by UCLA, WVU, Penn St, Georgia, Colorado. They came to SU to play QB, none left when McNabb beat them all out. Nash, Poles and Johnson were great players that could have played anywhere.

In 5 years Babers has brought in Culpepper, Devito, Amie, Markewicz and Morgan. That is not doing your job. Can you imagine if Dungey had not alr3ady been aboard how bad Dino's record would be??
Lastly, anyone thinking a transfer or Freshmen would be better than Devito next year is not being honest with themselves. The weaknesses that TD has can all be overcome by sets and play calling...and a better line.

TD is not the answer in my opinion. I didn’t think he had the “it” factor last year and this year just cemented my feelings. It should be a wide open job open to QB’s currently on the roster, freshmen and transfers. We should be advertising to the world the QB position is wide open.

My guess if we open up the QB position which I think Dino should, TD is gone into the transfer portal. A school like Coastal Carolina would be a good fit and maybe jumpstart an opportunity for him to reach the NFL like the Dallas Cowboys current QB did transferring from Pitt.

Sounds like Dad has a bad case of sour grapes and could use a reality check as I doubt any major Power 5 schools are beating down the door for 5th year Tommy Devito. I get that Dad cares about Tommy as his top priority but Dad isnt being honest with himself if he can't see that Tommy is a part of SU's struggles at qb.

I was quick to blame the OL for his struggles last season until i saw the team play at NC State. He had to have been sacked 6-7 times and almost all of them were on him. WR's and RB's were open downfield and he struggled locating them. Granted he did not have all the time in the world but he seemed to take his 3 steps back and either turtle or lock onto one receiver. Hoping he comes back but the program would definitely survive the loss of Devito. I actually think SU will be much improved next year with all these young guys getting quality pt. SU should definitely look to the portal for a Qb to either replace, or at a minimum, compete for the starters role.

Who has ever said anything about TD and the NFL?

It has been. ED and TD proved that their year.

Amie blew his chance and Fortin thought he'd be better off at USF. This year, true freshman were not going to catch TD with the weird camp situation

Tommy should be watching film on Morgan.

How does a QB overcome "hearing footsteps"?

I honestly don’t think Tommy is coming back next year. His Dad has been threatening to transfer since 2018 and when asked if he’ll be back next year his Dad says “boot is coming off soon” or “might be ready for NC State”.

I hope he does and absolutely kills it. But besides having a rocket arm if you didn’t know their recruiting stars and back story and looked at this season objectively has Tommy looked that much better than Rex or JM?

Oh ffs

QB play is not the thing we have to fix first.. Tommy has been fine when given time. Rex was just a stop gap. in 5 quarters of play from the new kid you can see we can be fine with the backups.

We have almost no running game, how many teams can do anything running like we did to start the year? the oline has improved as they played games together. we now see pieces of a running game. wish we had another 5-6 games to build on.

Oh ffs
What? If you say Tommy was superior to Rex and JM this year you’re not looking at it objectively. 9/15 for 32 yards total in one game. Rating of 64.

How many times was Tommy sacked this year compared to who followed? Same O line. If you think Tommy has been the superior QB you’re looking through Jersey tomato colored glasses.

Yeah there was a definite thread in those comments.

Sour grapes ? I haven’t been commenting on this trash because it’s cluelessness. The NC state game was Tommy’s first game after the cracked rib cartilage ( first time I’m detailing the actual injury ) it’s a very rare injury it’s the part where the rib attaches it’s allows for expansion anytime you breath or move this cartlidge expands . The slightest movement he saw stars ! His exact words ! Kid had to take huge needles directly into his ribs to play. They had to hold his hand ! To practice and let alone on game day . The injury was so rare only 3 NFL players ever had it and the all went on injured reserve! Not my son ! Toughest kid you will find ! So that was the first game and the needle didn’t take effect until the 2nd half so he just went down at any sign of trouble and he still got hit ! After that they gave him the shots earlier and it was a little better. If anybody has had a rib injury they know you fear coughing let alone playing power 5 Qb and behind the worst line in the country no less . So now u know. I’m not mad at you I’m not mad at any of you because you have zero idea about anything especially the Qb position. That’s what he dealt with a injury so rare , so painful and for what to hear crap like this ? Let’s delve into this year . First 2 games 2 very good teams we trot out 2 guards who never played with us . An unproven rb who probably gets moved to the slot , 2 new WRs with no experience, covid ( yes other teams have that) first games for the OC , we drops all over and pass interferences not called . Tommy in those 2 Games picked up 5 first downs with his legs yes now you know he can run ( could not last year with injury) so all that and it Tommys fault again ?? Lol
His last two games the line improved, still drops , tucker emerged and Tommy played well and than wham broken ankle . It’s a shame coach , agents , scouts all know he is going to the nfl sooner or later but go ahead live in your delusional thoughts because they just aren’t true . Good news Tommy got the boot off and is walking problem free . Today’s my bday can’t wait for my presents but that’s a great present right there. And just in case you nevet saw it here’s the smoking gun ...
Where do we rank in Qb support?? Where ?

Happy birthday Redrum , very glad to hear your son is healing. Hang in there, the sky will turn blue again.

I'll say it again. What happened after last season? Dino went out and hired a new OC and DC. The program also brought in Ryan Bartow to direct improved recruiting efforts.

Dino is not waiting around. He's being proactive. This is the insane season from hell. Things will be fine. I trust Dino to continue to make the changes he needs to improve the program.
