That Shafer says they target the "under the radar kids" in recruiting. So let's not try to get the big boys? WTH. With this philosophy we will continue to be who we are. What are we paying theses guys for, to stay mediocre? I'm livid. Is this what he settles for? I think we have the wrong guy.

that has always been SU's recruiting philosophy. Sure we got a few highly rated kids but the norm has always been the underrated kid.

Oh, ok. I was under the assumption that we recruited differently. I guess we will never be top 20 evere again. At least I know what to expect in the future.

that just means kids who don't go to recruiting services camps doesn't mean the kids can't play.

Small-time mentality. I cringed when I heard it. I get that we have to develop under the radar talent but how about talking about a "mix of highly recruited and under the radar guys". Ugh.

we live in Syracuse this isn't destination we need get lucky in recruiting... This new era of Cfb makes it harder in schools like us

We play in a Dome for a school in the ACC. We have history, tradition and brand. If we put money into the program we could absolutely make it to where we don't have to "get lucky" in recruiting. However with the schools inexplicable lack of support for the football program and Shafer and staff, yea, we have to get lucky.

I don't think it was a big secret that is how schools like Syracuse recruit. That strategy worked fine in the late 80's and the 90's.

as I was editing my post that style worked fine in the late 80's and the 90's
Agreed. Times have changed and we haven't. It's not just us, many of the northern schools have struggled with this shift. However, we show no signs of changing with the times and what's even scarier is we don't show any signs of caring.

plus these kids care about history when they were alive not the 50's and 60's .
Kids still know about our history, granted its wayyy down on the list of anything they care about. Our history has helped create the brand we have. I'd argue we have a bigger brand name than many of the football schools in the ACC.

Syracuse is at least equal to backwater s***holes like Starkville, Manhattan (Kansas), Stillwater, Morgantown, Waco, Corvallis and Pullman.

We have to pay a coach a minimum $2.5m and throw in another $1-1.5m for his staff if we ever want to compete.

2016 and 17 they have targeted some higher rated kids. You got to give the program some time perception of our program needs to change first and that only comes with winning

I thought we were a top 5 school in the ACC.

You mean the new era where Baylor and TCU are the best programs in the B-12 and Duke is playing well and BC can go ride the coaster from ACC championship game to collaspe under Spazini to beating USC, VT on the road, and being a B'ville TB wheel route drop from beating Clemson in the same year.

That harder new era?

The talent on this roster is signficantly better, of course we need to id and get underrecruited kids, but we also need to start pulling in a couple and by that I actually mean two or three top 250 kids a year.

like it or not Syracuse nowadays is known as a basketball school.

I totally agree but you can't tell me schools like Duke, NC State, Boston College, UNC, Wake and Virginia have a bigger football brand than us even after years of mediocrity and suckitude.

I was going to post similar. That's just an excuse we use when we miss on kids. If kids can get to Morgantown WV they can get to Syracuse.

Kansas, the ultimate basketball school, won the Orange bowl 6 years ago. They didn't seize the momentum but if they can do it, so can we. Arizona is a basketball school and they spent money on a real coach. Baylor is one of the worst programs in history and they finally hired the right coach.

I don't blame Doug for leaving when he did, and promoting Shafer was the cheap and safe choice, but this isn't working. His offensive staff is terrible. Just a joke. The defense is good enough to win games and a slightly below average offense would have beat Clemson and NC State. Demand wholesale changes on the offensive staff and give Shafer two more years since we're stuck with him anyway.

I agree the budget for the coaching staff needs to be up to par with P5 coaches. Especially now that we have the ACC money

I can't believe how much of a joke our offense has been all year. We have one of the best defenses in the ACC, imagine if they weren't on the field all game and didn't feel like they had to hold the other team to single digits points to win? I was annoyed at the defense against FSU and ND but good teams score, they score on good defenses too and our defense has stepped up something serious lately only to be let down time and time again by the offense.

What's percentage of the reason we got ACC money is Football/Basketball? Take that percentage and give it directly to football/basketball. You think SEC schools care about Olympic sports? They're probably able to fund them just fine despite not caring due to all the money football generates.

Big difference with Baylor and TCU in those fertile recruiting grounds. Cilmate wise also Cuse isn't ideal for a lot of big time recruits also, trust me I think Shafer will get it to work but we need to try and snag the Steve Ishmaels of the world that are a little underrated and develop them. I for one am not against recruiting more Juco players also. Take a chance with them.
