Tyler Roberson - It Needs to be said

When JB says "the wrong guy got the rebound, I knew he wouldn't make the FT". The obvious question is, coach then why was he on the floor if you feel that way? Why not TT? But everyone was afraid to ask that.

And TR is only there to rebound in that spot. DId JB hope TR would grab the rebound and pass it like Jason Kidd? JB is odd sometimes.

This is classic... you choose him over TT knowing it's only to rebound... he gets the rebound and is even fading away to not get fouled on the follow up and gets slapped on the arm... then you berate him for doing exactly what you hoped he would do. SMH

Everybody and their mother knew he had no prayer of making those free throws - simple as that. You can surmise all sorts of reasons why everyone knew that but ultimately it comes down to the fact that he is a terrible free throw shooter. If Gillon was going to the line we all would have expected double OT.

In the end it's up to the individual to do what is necessary to improve. Tyler never did while countless other players have through the years under JB - including those who he has treated in a similar way. I wish that were not the case and I certainly understand why some have not been fans of how JB has coached him and his comments to the press. But he has done it with others similarly and it has made them better. It has not worked with Tyler and you can blame JB but the bigger blame has to be on the player himself.

Still hoping he will have an impact over the next 4 games and it would not surprise me if he came up big in one of those games. I wish him the best.

This is probably the most logical and fair assessment, frankly. This whole situation just sucks all around.

JB is our Bob Knight. Time has passed him by. Nothing is more important to success than recruiting. Once Knight was exposed who would want to play for him? Same goes for JB. He is old school and old school is now a hindrance. Like Knight he still knew/knows x's and o's but they both forgot that they are not beyond public scrutiny and that such scrutiny will come back to bite them and the program they treasure.

drop him mid court senior day.

Great scene! And to paraphrase from it: Despite my years of loyal service, much like Robey, there are a certain few people here(analogy to Boeheim, they know who they are) who would (words unsuitable for kids) and not give me the common courtesy of a d*mn reach around! ;) (actually. that reach-around comment goes to all the folks who have been tightly clutching their "likes", reminding me of something Howard Stern long ago said females treat like gold)

Poor Private Pyle.

Poor Private Pyle.

There's been a couple of times this board has pushed me close. I wouldnt be shocked if someone has already Pyled from the effects of this. Heck, it's been proven they might get shat upon, so maybe that's actually a good prevention measure, logic straight out of the Boeheim bucket? ;)

Poor Private Pyle.

Actually, this is the Nam war movie image that Boeheim's comments about Robey reminds me of. I just picture Boeheim's words as the bullets that cut the last of the 3 sons down right before the finish line, as Robey throws his hands skyward, asking G*d, "Why?!?". Every so often something I cant mention happens to me, causing me to do the same thing. I have actually mentioned it to my therapist. They remind me that there will always be judgmental folks whose actions we can't control, but hopefully I can remind them of their effects on others. I wish Boeheim could get similar feedback.

Well guys, I just told my girlfriend I'd trade her for another National Championship so I think Roberson is probably feeling more love than her right now.
I would also trade her for a natty. So we're like brothers that way.

^^^ Agree with this...say whatever you want, there was absolutely no value in JB saying what he did...is a jerk comment...Roberson offering a small smile and refraining from further comment shows better judgement than JB displayed...
Kind of a Melo - Phil Jackson moment.

Roberson, with his smile, showed that even at his young age he has managed to obtain more self control than Boeheim has in his 41 years of coaching. Or maybe Boeheim has had it in the past, but he certainly isn't exhibiting it now. As plenty have said, at this point in the game there is no reason for some of what he says.

I'm also a bit confused by his, "put Taurean in, try to go get it" right after the free throw comment. Am I missing something?

Every time JB says this kind of stuff all I can think is "he's been coached by you and your assistants for 4 years." At what point will JB accept some of the accountability for how this situation has turned out?

No idea.

But at what point does the player accept the accountability of year four being woefully disappointing across the board? And at what point do we come to the conclusion that some guys like Rick Jackson and Rakeem Christmas flourish in their final year(s)...and why not this kid?

Don't love the coach calling out a player that he'd miss the free throws. But whatever. This is big time college athletics where they don't hang 9th-place banners on the West side of the Dome.

It reflects my opinion. And raise your hand if you knew he'd miss both FTs.

The only thing we didn't see tonight was his customary missed bunny(ies). And that's because he didn't get any chances.

Crazy to think Roberson was a high recruit for 'Nova and Kansas, too. Not sure he even sees the court with those teams. His ESPN scouting report was hilarious as it rambles on about his big impact on both ends and how he owns the 8-15 foot range with this solid shot and handle. LOL.

Should it be accountability on the coaching or the player? Short answer: yes. I think JB rips him too much at this point given it's not effective and you can't talk about how awful the defense is every game but only single out one player consistently. It's the very definition of "not fair."

But that's what happens when a potentially GREAT PLAYER falls so short of expectations. And he doesn't play hard every night. He simply doesn't. He played pretty hard tonight, but he tried to sell fouls on boards two or three times in the first half and that's never going to fly. Ever. Not against UofL and not when you had honest chances to actually get the boards. Just as JB has to know who Roberson is and should ease the hell up, Robey has to know his coach and simply play with some intelligence.

He had no chance to make the FTs, we all knew it.

JB is spot on: the wrong player got the ball. Because Lydon was discarded (for the umpteenth time) right into the cheerleaders before Roberson even corralled the ball. The foul was given to the wrong player. It's easy to get caught up in defending Roberson that they overlook that his statement is factually correct.

Lastly, any recruit watching these games and press conferences who thinks SU is a good landing spot is thinking what most of us do on a game-to-game basis: cripes, Roberson sucks at basketball.

Honestly, if Grant and Ennis come back, I think Xmas has a similar Senior year to Roberson. JB yelling he's the 4th or 5th option, and he just needs to rebound and give 40 minutes of high energy defense... Then he checks out. Just my guess though.

I think he just lucked out and became option 2 or 3 behind Cooney and G. Like Roberson, kid came in with a pretty decent skill set.

He was not a disappointment tonight. We did not lose because of him. JB's comment that "the wrong player got the ball" and that he had no faith in Roberson making those free throws does not reflect the fan bases opinion.

Tyler Roberson got that rebound and was playing to win. What else can you ask from someone?

I'll argue with anyone, I think his play decline is a result of not only JB relentlessly bashing his character/play, but our guards classic inability to take advantage of a player that plays above the rim. If We have aggressive guards that attack the rim and find the open men (Thompson/Roberson/Lydon) downlow? Roberson averages 8 to 10 points a game and 10 boards this year if that's the case.

Say what you will about this kid mentally falling apart, but he played to win tonight and I just think any question of his character is bush league.

I had faith that he had a shot to tie it up, and I'm proud of him for going after that board and at least giving us a chance.
This is so true. I am friendly with Jim and think most of the talk about him on this board is laughable, but the way he has treated Roberson is unforgivable. It's as simple as that. There is no defense for it. To continually trash a student athlete, one who is far and away our most aggressive and hustling player, is a joke. Yea he missed the FT. But he also got the rebound. No one else did.

I wish Tyler lydon had 1/10th the hustle or heart Robey did. He would be all American. Piling on Robey all the time is laughable. Our so called go to guy lydon is a ghost for 70% of every game.

Seriously you don't think Lydon has 1/10th the hustle or heart of Robey? Seriously?

What's happened to this board?

You should tell Jim the next time you see him...

I've been around countless teams and countless practices and it's pretty much universally agreed that no one hustles more than Robey in SU history. How Jim has handled him is a travesty. And that's not an exaggeration. Believe what u want, it's a free country. There's so much more to it though.

As for Lydon, he has been a huge disappointment this year. It's sad that a frosh TT has moves and an offensive game that lydon will never have. Lydon is a SG playing in an undersized PF body.

I can tell you with an extremely high level of certainty that when recruits and current players, and families of both of those groups, watch comments made like those in press conferences that is 100% not what they are thinking.
