UNH post game

Devo made one of his best remarks early in the second half. He said Judah needed to get the rest of the team involved because he can get what he does anytime he wants. I was disappointed in what he brought to the court tonight.

Cuffe, Brown, Taylor, JJ and Cope all showed some good things that should get better as we go through the year. I'm a little concerned that Taylor is not going to be quick enough to handle some opponents on defense. We will need him in the game for his offense.

Red is going to need a lot of patience riding the roller coaster he will be on with this crowd of unfinished talent.
I think Devo said Judah needs to make things easier on himself AND the rest of the team. Ge tries to do everything the hard way.

Very well put.

And then Matt launched into one of his “is he drinking?” moments about how Judah’s sportswear logo would have to be the outline of a body down at a crime scene.

I’m sure he meant well.

Oh I completely agree that's what Red wants to do.

I'm just sayin', Nick Collison's not walking through that door, and even if you squint really hard, you're probably not confusing Peter Carey with Collison.
Sure. But we don’t need to be Roy Williams UNC elite at rebounding the ball. We just have to improve a lot on this first game and do it well against ACC competition. I don’t see why we can’t be a decent rebounding team this year once players like Maliq get healthy, Benny gets his head screwed on right, and players start to grow into their roles.

I like Bell starting the first half for speed, and starting Justin's poise under pressure in the second.

Judah, Starling, Copeland, Taylor, and whoever at the center (including Benny) starting second halfs when were up double digits could be a blessing in disguise. It seems pretty clear to me those 4 a can draw doubles off the dribble with ease and get very open 4-12 feet shots (Judahs alittle more forced). Benny gives the option of stretching the center to the perimeter and should watch how taylor has put the ball on the floor with ease (no flashiness) toward the basket in the last 2 games. The Problem is running them off the three-point line on defense though.

Copeland with 12 boards. 3 assists. 4 turnovers and 8 points. I love those boards, not gonna lie. We knew there would be adjustments in year one. This season will be a mix of “Oh damn” followed by the occasional “Ahhhhh damn!”. I’m for it. There is alot to like.
If I was coaching Copeland I would tackle him every time he thought about taking a three. He hasn’t come close and the timing of those threes are just stupid shots. His only saving grace is he rebounds.

Ok post game part 2 after re watch. Some additional thoughts.

1- I think someone mentioned McLeod having some pain in his right hand being asked to come out. I hope that improves soon. He needs to get the ball in our half court offense and get a chance to get us some easy buckets every game. His footwork is solid and his work rate under the basket is much improved ( tip of the hat to Griff) vs FSU. No reason to not take advantage of this. We aren't talking him being Jesse 2.0 but he is good enough in the post to use that frame and size with that soft touch.

2- Judah missed open shooters about 13 times in this game. A little over half of those he drew fouls and we got points. That said he has to distribute and give our shooters a chance to make the game easier on everyone.

3- Daniels is really good. I wonder if he has eligibility left... anyways he made several buckets in traffic look easy and they were not. Reminded me of Marquis Daniels at Auburn in how efficient and smooth he is in the paint with a nice shot too. He's not much of a defender but offensively and on the boards kid is nice. Might be best player in the AE.

4- There should be a lot on film that will show up for our guys to use to get better. Got the first one out of the way. Time to tighten things up with full effort for 40 mins not 20

5- Benny is missed for the depth and rotation at forward and his athleticism on the boards. Brown is still a step slow being banged up - he will be even more effective at full health.

I don’t like Brown at the five. There’s no rim protection at all. Our on ball defense was pretty good for the first ten minutes, but after that they drove to the rim with no fear. A big, strong team is going to crush this team. We have no bigs who can bang. The problem with our shooters, Justin, Bell and Cuff is they aren’t getting enough good looks. They can go ten minutes without ever getting a shot. Judah and JJ are awful setting them up for shots. I would say between Judah and JJ they took at least ten bad shots tonight. Red has to address this. Judah needs to be reigned in, just like early last season. Benny should help, but this team is tiny.

I would love for you to be right. Fingers crossed!

Love having Syracuse hoops back for another season! How good was that first 10 minutes too… rocking the script uniform like they should, getting in the passing lanes, looking athletic & going up & down, it was beautiful.

From my perspective, there was a similarity to the first 2 pre-season games… go hard for the first 1/4-1/3 of the game, seemingly tire out & begin to struggle. All gas no breaks is a great way to start, but it’s unsustainable & it shows. Gets messy after that.

I didn’t love the zone at the end. UNH seemingly had 30 offensive rebounds once it was implemented. I can back mixing up some possession by possession, but it didn’t really seem to position any more positively in the game? Teams are just more comfortable facing a zone, it’s pretty clear.

I love everything Kyle Cuffe does. Devo straight up called him a “Kyle Lowery looking dude”… haha, amazing. He plays solid & hard D (even bends at the knee in good defensive position, I can’t stand it when players bend at the waist like that’s getting them low in good position), takes appropriate shots, is physical, has burst/explosion (can’t wait for him to catch a body) & just a great demeanor!

I will never be someone to try & make prognostications about the entire season on one game. There’s others players that need to come back, chemistry to be built, etc. I’m just pleased we won, that we actually look genuinely athletic again, and that the season has started!

Surprised at so much panic on here. I will have more to say tomorrow but while it was a messy game, I felt it was a W when it could have not been one and we saw some things out of some guys that even now are question marks for this team.

Taylor was assertive in the second half and put up 10 (I think), which is great. Kid has some game but we haven't seen a lot of it.

Bell had a really solid first 5 minutes. Thought he struggled after getting a breather. Really needs to care about rebounding.

Cuffe had two big threes in the second half and makes positive plays on both ends.

Carey got a little run, which is good. Not sure he will get much but nice to see him on the court. Still believe he has a nice combo of size and athleticism, even if he's raw and lacking in the strength department.

McCleod had a couple moments. Some not great ones too, but he was OK.

Copeland gets wild and that won't go away this year I don't think. But he was still a positive factor.

Just think that collection of guys needs to figure out how they fit in and if they do, there's reason to be optimistic even if the season doesn't play out exactly how many here hoped. All those guys have more time here so solid improvement would still be a good thing even if the record isn't great.

We are better than last year. I like the idea of rebounding again. Team will hit the boards

I just worry about the guard play and being a bit more controlled esp by mintz. Needs to be corralled. Boeheim will be missed in that regard. The quick hook can be an effective form of bleach to clean something up

Congrats red on win 1. Loved seeing Moten and JW there . Family

No disagreement at all. This team has the skills on both ends to get what it wants against the majority of the schedule. That doesn't mean they will early on as they sort everything out. The difference between winning by 50 vs 11 was mostly due to being sloppy and over confident paired with playing against the AEs best player who would make a nice grad transfer in Orange if he has eligibility.

We probably absolutely destroy Canisius.

I saw a curb stomping turn into a scrimmage. Meh. Lots of active hands, most every pass was challenged and lots of defections. Maliq is a menace with his hands as a defender, he must have had 15 defections by himself. I also saw a lot of decent shots not fall in, those will go some nights.

I like Cuffe a lot. He’s probably the main guy next season.

I did not see any last second 3s go in by unh. Maybe I missed them but I’m happy not watching 25+ seconds of defense followed by a successful three going off with 1 on the clock.

Chance could be a real difference maker for this team if he can get healthy.
Chance was the guy I was most excited for, and I think he might be the best nba prospect, but the shooting is worse than I thought and Chance isn’t going to help that this year. Elite defense, and the way he can help the shooting issue is by facilitating and getting guys clean looks, but his minutes will come at the expense of some of the guys who can make them. Better with him, just not sure he catapults this team into the upper echelon like I hoped. Obviously still high on him though, just worried about the outlook of fitting this team together.

If Westry comes back and is as good as people think then he probably assumes a lot of Copeland’s minutes.

It was really nice to see everyone get at it in the first 10 mins. It was great to not be down 10 to start the game because of giving up open 3s.

Forgot how much fun it is to watch a team run up and down in transition with guards that can dunk.

I like this team, will be interesting to watch and see how they mature together.

I thought devo was quite good. Some pointed criticisms without being too nasty.

I feel the same way.

Don’t expect a whole lot this year.

We need to understand this is a multi-year rebuild from a pretty low level.
A pretty low level? He’s not starting from scratch, half these guys he recruited, and the other half he grabbed from the portal. It’s not like he was handed a team with zero relationships, he is taking over a .500 team that got their best player back plus his hand picked transfers. I’m not saying he needs to win 25 games but starting from a "low level” is just not true.
