I don't think it has to be one or the other. At this point, however, I'd take recruiting.

For comparison 14 out of our 23 sacks were by our DL last year. Would have to think that teams passed on BG a lot last year with all of the points they were putting up.

I like coaches who have played the position, which he did at N. Illinois. Looks to be a good hire. Might help with OT Alaric Jackson and DE Drew Beesely as well.

You can pretty much guarantee he IS NOT a better DL coach than Daoust. Daoust was our best position coach even in the Marrone era. IMHO he is our biggest coaching loss.

Daoust was a great coach. Like Reynolds, he also came from a MAC school.

So not sure how you can make that guarantee about Vinson when no one's seen him coach yet?

He’s plugged in to Detroit to. That might not excite a lot of the people but there’s a ton of talent out there and it’s close to home. Detroit kids (pontiac and flint included) are tough rust belt kids. They won’t get scared of Syracuse weather. Minus the big 3 if we can take a few kids away from the 2nd level Big 10 schools from that state we’ll be in good shape.

Ron Thompson and Crume both had pretty good careers here.

Agree, seems like a good hire. Recruiting and experience. I wasn't aware that Daoust was such a great DL coach. He will be almost impossible to replace apparently, I didn't know that.

I wonder where he will wind up, probably a DC at a smaller school or P5 DL coach I would imagine

Yes .. I mean, boy do we need to flip the talent equation. You can't coach size or speed, and with 2 dramatically bad seasons in the books ... why would we want to spend another three years at the bottom of the ACC, with bigger, stronger athletes running by us, while we try to pull off coaching miracles developing smaller, slower kids. I'll take recruiters every time for staff positions.

I didn't say I didn't like the Vinson hire, I do. Just saying I don't think he is the coach today that Daoust was for us when he left. That said, Vinson is young and could develop into what Daoust was.
