Vinson Reynolds named new DL Coach

Is he not in Daoust's league? I don't know just asking
From a recruiting standpoint, tough to argue. Apparently he's very adept at that. As a DL Coach, without knowing him, I have a hard time fathoming that he's in the same ball park. Daoust was ready to take the next step. This guy looks like he's just developing as a position coach.

Reynolds may turn out to be a great hire. But, I just don't understand, outside of maybe it being divisive to the players, why you wouldn't even consider retaining Daoust to bring in this guy. It certainly reads like a step back from my vantage point. Especially when I'd imagine you could've retained Daoust, at least for a year anyway.

I thought Daoust was in the he won't stay at Syracuse unless shafer was his boss camp, but could not be correct but thought people were saying here. Thought it was jekelish

He didn't leave for Pitt because he was a "Shafer guy" ... He's pretty loyal. I wonder if he'd stay on as DL. Maybe he'd stay with a promotion? If he fit with Babers?

I think if Shafer had a position to offer it would be a no brainer, but, I don't think that's the case, at least this season. Very loyal, yes, but you could've had him this year.

I suppose looking at the entirety of the picture, and the very low likelihood that you keep him beyond 1 year anyway, it does make sense from an organizational standpoint.

It just grinds my gears that we could be downgrading that position coach with an increased budget.

And, my judgement is most likely clouded here.

I'd rather have an inexperienced staffer who can recruit better athletes, than an experienced staffer who spends all his time trying to make inferior athletes more effective.

What about an experienced staffer that can recruit as well?

Daoust was no slouch on the trail... Kids bought into everything he was about. Extremely personable guy.

Daoust was a big selling point for Clark choosing SU over Florida I believe. I certainly wouldn't call Steven an inferior athlete by any means.

If you fire the Head Coach I believe you need to get rid of the whole coaching staff. Might lose some good guys but new ideas, new leadership, no friction.

And I think people need to get used to this concept. We're overhauling everything. Who knows if every single coach or staff member will be as good as the person they replaced. But they're all getting replaced.

The biggest key is that the guy driving the boat will be better.

I think Daoust is exceptional. But you hire a new HC you believe in and you go all in. He makes his bed.
Agreed. I'll also point out that Babers retained some assistants at Eastern Illinois when he came on and at Bowling Green when he came on - with some of those guys still with him at Syracuse. Clearly, he's not adverse to the concept of retaining staff when he steps into the head coach gig somewhere, provided he thinks they are a good fit. He seems to be a guy with a particular eye for what he wants. I think we need to give him the benefit of the doubt that if he decided to not retain any of Shafer's assistants, it is for particular and thought out reasons. As Cusian said, he's making his own bed with these hires. He has a track record of success and deserves the benefit of the doubt until evidence of poor staff decision making starts manifesting on the field.

But the previous coach wasn't fired at Bowling Green (and not sure on EIU), so this is a completely different situation.

Western Michigan - does anything good ever come out of there? :D

Good point. Daoust would likely be a short-timer here. If he stays for next year, there's little guarantee that he'd stay for longer unless a promotion was in the offing and Babers has his own young up-and-comer in the DC position. With Reynolds, you can reasonably expect to hold on to him for 3 years, which gives you time to build up the talent base.

Comparing Reynolds' resume to Daoust's (pre SU) I don't see that big a difference. Reynolds actually has more experience at the DL position than Daoust did (upon arrival). Just an observation, not trying to be argumentative.

Which probably means that Coyle had some say in staff retention, as in, "I want a clean sweep of the football house".

Out of the blue he took Amir Ealey out of PA. Didnt think we had a chance with him. Heard he was a slient Maryland commit when Daoust stoled him.

When players and coaches become available you find out their true water level.....all the recruits encouraged to look elsewhere have committed to lesser programs and other then Shafer and Lester our old coaches don't seem to be in great demand...of course this could change during the coaches convention next week.

that a very fair, and salient, point. For what it's worth, the previous coach at EIU (Bob Spoo) retired after a 2-9 season.

Coyle for sure wanted a clean slate. No Shafer, no Shafer "loyalists", nada. Time to move on kids, Daoust and Acosta are not coming back. I like this hire, and we shall see how it plays out.

And that should not be an indictment of the kind of men they are or how hard they worked. Just that it was time to start over.

I can't see Coyle interfering with DB's coaching staff by saying "under no circumstances, should you hire any current staff members for your staff."

How much of a "Shafer loyalist" was Acosta? All these coaches are first and foremost opportunists...follow that dream ...and $$$$$$$$.
