My only question is what is housed in that end? It is possible to make old and new "match".
the southern end? isn't that the pool?

How far back are you harking? Back in the mid-Sixties, the PA would boom "Out of the West come the Orangemen!"Here's what they did with the historic structure that was on the Carrier Dome site before the Dome was built.
On a side note, the team used to run out of the tunnel from Archbold. Maybe the new locker rooms will be built inside Archbold and that can happen again.
Makes sense. I dont think the Dome needs anymore boxes.I could be wrong, but I would doubt they are expanding the luxury box capacity.
I'm guessing (with no connections or inside knowledge whatsoever) that there might be a move to put the luxury boxes in the third level, and make the 200 level into club seating. It would make sense because most modern stadiums are set up this way, and the questionnaire that went out earlier this year was intended to gauge interest in club level seating (among other things).
Maybe the "A" and "B" level preferred becomes club level seating, and the lower level sideline prices go down for seats inside the 20s.
I don't see cost breakdown for the parts of the stadium in any links i have looked at. Here is total cost:The Vikings are a pro organization. Syracuse is a small college. No matter, the chuckle and comment was about design not engineering and I should've left it out. But seriously, I wouldn't expect some fancy progressive roof design unless it's within budget. The budge is the 100 million dollar question.
I'd prefer they think long term on the roof, care, maintenance and replacement. Heck, maybe even some solar elements thats caplable of running the Dome's electric etc. Who knows, it's only a roof though.
Your ideas are nothing new and maybe that's in the overall plan. Giant stadium entry with escalators / bars etc would be great and while details weren't told to me, that archbold east side being a big entrance was. I assume (hope) that it's done right with all those bells and whistles.
I don't know if it was more boxes or just moving the boxes. that's a good question, i didn't ask.
I'd like to know the cost on the picture you posted
That is the tallest building on the quad. *I'd dump the physics building. Then you'd have a clean connection from the Quad to the Dome.

But...but...The Blinker!!!!! Think of the students! They might not be able to tear it down or change the exterior but based on what was done with the renovation of the Hall of Languages in the 1980s, they can destroy the interior and rebuild it differently without a problem. They added another floor to the Hall of Languages as part of that renovation so now, the floors and the windows no longer line up. That being said, Archbold Gym is, IMHO, not a historic building that needs to be saved. It is a generic and unremarkable building that says 'this is the worst architecture left from the 1950s' to me. I love many old buildings and still get heartburn when I think about what was done to almost all of the James Street mansions. But Archbold is just an ugly building that should never have been built. Rip it down, and take HBC and Hinds Hall down too while you are at it.

Only the northern end of the building is original and, I believe, protected - the red brick portion is as you've described. Since Archbold was badly damaged by fire in the '40s and modified since, I'm sure the interior is not protected. The whole thing's going to be gutted and I imagine much of the southern end could be demolished.
Makes sense. Most of the pedestrian traffic coming from the shuttle busses and the rest of campus hits the Archbold side of the Dome first anyways.
The shuttle buses from Skytop where a ton of fans come from hit the Quad and go nowhere near Archbold.
If you walk from the Quad to the Dome, do you see the Archbold side of the Dome first, or the Irving Ave side?
I stand corrected and am losing my marbles as well. I would see Archbold side first but it is blocked by buildings mostly til you pass Ernie, then see Crouse Dr.
Buses get off at College Pl. bus stop and go through the quad, Physics Bldg on the left, Hendricks Chapel on the right (Archbold also on the left but don't see much of it), go by Ernie and through to the Dome.
You might be right. I swear I remember them coming out and going in to that tunnel on the east end of the stadium underneath Archbold Gymnasium though. West end was the main archway at the top of the steps on Irving. How far back are you harking? Back in the mid-Sixties, the PA would boom "Out of the West come the Orangemen!"
Here are some good photos of the pre-fire structure. Worth clicking through: http://archives.syr.edu/buildings/archbold_photos.html

Sounds like a band-aid fix to a gun shot wound.i was told just yesterday a new hard top, and a bunch of new boxes and was also told the archibold gym building was going to be phased into the plans. Whether it's going to be torn down or not I wasn't sure. Pool wing gone. I wasn't told of any west side expansion.
my immediate question was 'more boxes?' where, in the endzones? the talk was around the upper level maybe accessed by elevators. "the current structure makes all the design elements really complex." "but they're hustling to get this going"
i also said, hard top - translucent maybe ? or something like the Europeans are doing and I got a laugh, that the Europeans are way ahead of us in design.
Anyhow, my source is rock solid and my takeaway was a hard top (non retractable) with East side expansion and a bunch of new boxes.
I used the SU student tour guide as my reference. Silly me for believing him.Not true. Two levels below (basement and sub-basement) and 3 floors above.

Ok...so how does 4 stories above ground and 2 below = " most of it is below ground" ??I used the SU student tour guide as my reference. Silly me for believing him.
From SU's web site:
"Four stories above ground and two stories below; first floor site of 307-seat Stolkin Auditorium, a gift from Ralph E. Stolkin, a friend of the University and parent of a student."
Ok...so how does 4 stories above ground and 2 below = " most of it is below ground" ??
I heard the ACC Network Headquarters will be down there. (on the QT... hush hush)Shhh... that's because the other floors below ground are very secret. That's where the experiments with the collider are occurring.
I honestly don't ever remember going to a 4th floor. Perhaps storage or utilities? No windows on that one as I recall, if there is one. Machine shop is in the sub basement along with labs. Basement is labs.Ok...so how does 4 stories above ground and 2 below = " most of it is below ground" ??
