What I'm hearing

This is what I heard last night from my connection (long chat about the AAU scene, college bball in general and we went into cuse full circle). This info is as of 3.4.2022 and things can change (please don't go after my throat if one or two of these things change).

Roster next year-
Apparently, we are in the driver's seat with Mintz right now. It's going to be between us and Wake Forest for him with NC state and Depaul having guard commits here recently. Jimmy has told him about a starting role and he would be along side JG3 for the starting backcourt. If he comes, we would run 3 guards with Copeland redshirting/sitting all year. The coaches will have to get his buy-in with this because his first year was labeled as spot minutes/back up mins and he won't get that with a Mintz commit.
Cole is 50/50 to stay (Jimmy even mentioned it). JB will ask him to stay one more year and put together some solid tape to possibly get drafted ala Hughes. He will be the featured player on the roster and gives JB someone he trusts. With this AND if Benny stays, we won't tap into the transfer market for a forward. Benny leaves, we will.
Frank is 50/50 as well. According to my connection, the game is still moving a lil too fast for him but he knows he could start at various places. He knows he would get 20 minutes again next year with Jesse back so he's weighing his options to go or not. Might do the JBA way and put his name in to get feedback/interest from other schools and decide to come back. If he goes, we will get a center/forward transfer because Peter is not ready yet.
JBA, Buddy, Jimmy Jr gone obviously.

Coaches Retirement/His interview the other day-
Apparently, coach was feeling the heat/pressure to speak up about the so called "plan" from booster/fans/JW. My connection kept harping on the term "succession plan" always means "in house" . He said watch the smaller school openings and if one of the assistants bolt for it, Hop is most likely to get let go at UW and he could slide back home for a year than take over. He said that's all a big if but could happen. Likelihood it's Red for the takeover and he will be the lead recruiter for the 2023 cycle. Still hasn't ruled out JB calling it in the summer time, exact quote " I get he promised these income recruits he was going to coach them but with both sons leaving, why?". JW is hearing all the chatter and criticism and knows something needs to happen soon. JB has and will have input in the hire but not full.

Might be new news or not but just wanted to share.
Could you clarify why you mean by Quadir’s buy in? Are you saying the AAU guys think quadir could be the deciding factor of whether Mintz comes or not?

Not right now, anyway.
I just think JW knows he has to give Red (or Hop) a shot first, see how that goes, then swing for the fences

I guess so, but it's risky as hell.
I would rather see a Pitino-Rental as the bridge to the future home run, big money hire.

This nostalgia crap hire is going to land us in a bad, bad place as a program.

Liking those lowering odds for Jesse leaving.
Would be 2nd season in a row that the player I consider most promising and most looked forward to seeing left the program!
Won't name who it was last season...
Jesse would be crazy to leave. He’s gonna get preseason ACC consideration. As a Jr., JB will look to him to add to his offensive repertoire.

You guys blame the recruiting on something different each day:
1. Red can’t recruit
2. G-Mac can’t recruit
3. No one wants to play for JB
4. No one knows when JB is retiring
5. JB is turning prospects away

You can’t have it both ways. If JB is the problem, then Red and G-Mac are limited.
Based on most things I’ve seen and heard I am pretty sure JB is the bigger problem than our assistants. I think our guys are fighting an uphill battle for various reasons, but right or wrong they are going to get lumped in with JB. And when we’ve got good players they don’t want to stick around. One thing Hop was great at was being the good cop to JB’s bad cop and I am not sure we have that anymore.

I’m still of the belief JW has not made any decision, internal or external. Twice now, JB has said it will not be his decision on who his successor is, but he’ll have some input. If a decision had been made, he wouldn’t say that.

Our coach seems to have a habit of talking when he shouldn't,

Hop would rather be an assistant in the NBA than the head coach at Syracuse? I know you’re plugged into Hop, but I don’t know if that makes sense. But maybe I’m misunderstanding what you’re saying.

Doesn't have to deal with recruiting anymore. He'd probably make pretty good money, and was a key guy on the staff of those 3 Olympic teams. I think he would have respect from a lot of players, at least as an assistant.

Our coach seems to have a habit of talking when he shouldn't,

So you think JW has selected the next coach or that JB will decide who?

Jesse seems like a good kid so he wouldn’t do this but he could easily portal and go to a team like Ohio State or Kansas expand his brand.

He doesn’t seem like the type of kid that would do that but he could and nobody would blame him.

He wasn’t appreciatied enough this year.
I have a hard time with this. I assume you think that JB was rough on him at his pressers? The ones I listened to seem like honest criticism without any malice. That he was reaching in and over, picking up silly fouls. Not the biggest putdown I've ever heard.

And since he was injured, JB has gone out of his way to spotlight Jesse's importance by indicating the likelihood of us winning games we lost because he was not in the lineup.

So, I'm not sure where your lack of appreciation is generated.

It came from the ONE comment about him not being strong enough. All the other criticism was pretty fair, especially after his disappointing performance against Pitt. It’s all completely ignoring the numerous times that JB has gone out of his way to support him and even call him a top 10 center in the country.

And he could stand to get stronger.

So what have we learned from this thread?

- Anybody any good is leaving because JB was mean to them.
- Nobody in next year's class will be any good.
- If the next coach is taken from the staff, he will be a failure
- If the next coach comes from outside the staff, he will be a success.
- Ihe program is "the Titanic"

It's good to know all this in advance. At least we have time to get the lifejackets on and get into the lifeboats.

That would be the hope...but you know you are gonna have JB with an office in the building checking in
THAT is the reason I would so much prefer an outside hire. If we hire internally, I see Boeheim continuing to be involved (which I no longer see as a good thing). An outsider hire would thank Jim for his time but make his own decisions, which would likely be better than we are now.

I don't think I've ever "unliked" one of your posts, but this was the first. Come on now, talk about hyperbole. Let's try to be somewhat sensible around here.

Your handicapping could be right on the money. I certainly don't know. But is anybody else underwhelmed at the notion of Red or Hop (or any other assistant for that matter) being named the next HC? There has got to be a proven commodity out there that is a better option and that could be lured to the Hill.
I totally agree. Pay the stud coach a large sum. It is the only way. Hiring from within will not work.
and turned the program into a powerhouse?

Jim Boeheim at Syracus

Jim Boeheim at Syracuse
Good one. How about some this century?

You've said that you think JW hasn't made up his mind yet.

So then is it helpful for Boeheim to be talking about "Ironclad Succession Plans" - when it's not his decision? If I was his boss, I certainly wouldn't appreciate all these asides he throws out there for the media; who is going to be back next year, who is ready to play or not, when he's going to retire, etc.

It's just not helpful. He needs a muzzle for chrissakes.

Great point and totally agree!!

Look at what Wildhack has done at SU from an HR perspective. Everything points to creative continuity within the organization.

Let’s start with Lax. Certainly it was an unusual situation, but he hired within the existing department, and bolstered the staff with a well financed support staff with Petro. It likely all started with a “it’s time” discussion with Desko. Measured, smart, efficient, but bold restructuring, (woman’s lax, was also the best qualified Syracuse connection available).

Now football. Again, program continuity preserved with creative and well-financed support with the hire of the new assistants.

I think we agree, all these make a lot of sense from not only the ADs perspective, but from fans as well.

Woman’s hoops. Perhaps a shaky initial response to Q’s issues, but paving the way for Leggette to come back looks like again the best available Syracuse connect will be the choice here. Hard to argue with hire.

Why do people think he’s going to change his MO for hoops?

My guess is Hop gets the first call and if it’s a no, then it’s Red and the assistant coaching staff gets overhauled with an emphasis on recruiting and likely an experienced former HC, sorta like what Michigan did with Martelli.
I agree. I can't imagine Hop says no

But the really bad news is that we don't have enough life jackets. I have mine. Good luck SWC

Can Limu the emu swim?

Queue that up as a question for the next call in show.

Depends on what your definition of a plan is. And I think him going on with axe was with JWs blessing. He went on a couple other shows after that which he goes on every week and said the same things. If what he said on the axe show was way out of line, jw would have told him to cut it and you wouldn’t have heard him repeat the same things a couple days later.

You have to have room.
doubtful all 5 freshman are active and not redshirts. expect at least 1 or 2 to be.

the boeheims are gone.

likely some other players will leave.

I dont think room will be an issue.
