Now that we are officially at 10, pre-Bryant news, I have been thinking about if it's better for the program to actually miss out on TB...Hear me out.

While I want him to come here as much as the next fan, I'm not sure how much it'd help the long term well-being of our program. I'm more pessimistic than most when it comes to next year and I don't think we'll be all that good, even w/Bryant. I think we're going to have our struggles and be similar to this past season, making it a question as to whether we can make (and excel in) the Tourney. Maybe TB is the key to a final four run, maybe he's just enough to get us into the Tourney...I don't know, but with what we have on the roster currently and all the question marks, I don't think we're a title contender.

With that all said, would it be in the best interest of the program if TB hopped on board for a single season, meaning we'd have 11 scholarship athletes and have to push back the schollie hit another year? Or would it be best if we took our medicine ASAP and were done with the reductions in 4 years instead of 5 with TB? Since if we do add Bryant, he is, for all intents and purposes, going to take up 3 scholarships in 2015/2016, since we couldn't take the reduction right away. That's like another 2 scholarship penalty right off the bat.

Long story short...Is it better to have one year of Thomas Bryant, 2 empty scholarships this upcoming season and be out 3 scholarships in 2019-2020...or is it better to have 10 scholarships this year and a full complement available in 2019-2020? I'm more torn than I should be. I want to win next year, but I also want these penalties done as soon as possible. With JB's pending retirement in the next few years, I don't want Hop (or the next coach if for whatever reason it's not him) still dealing with this in 2020. Is it crazy to think we'd be better off if Bryant doesn't choose SU?

(all of this could be moot if TB goes to IU anyhow)

i cant see short changing jimmy or the kids here now by going short-

usually i would say get it over with- but the talent on board deserves every thing for showing loyalty by signing even with the knowledge something was coming down

In today's college game you maximize your chances for the next season. Too many things can happen over one year, let alone two or three. Plus I think we'll get relief from the scholie limit.

We have a 70 year old coach, the mindset should be do what is best for right now.

I highly doubt thats jb's motivation. If anything, hes thinking long term for the program.

You don't really believe that a 70 year old coach is thinking about 3 or 4 years down the road, do you?

I forgot to mention that I think we'll get the reduction knocked down after appeals, as well.

Hopefully we get Bryant and the reduction knocked down to 2 per season and take them both this season.

Just think about next year...Get TB. That's it...we do not know what will happen next year with other players and if they will return or not. Don't focus on 4 years from now, do everything we can to win next year.

Interesting question and I see your point because clearlyTB will leave after one year. Hell even our mediocre players leave early. But college bball is now a 12 month exercise. No way to really plan beyond that horizon anymore. Additionally, I still think the appeal could get us a ship or two back and in that event we will have regretted not taking him.

If it were SU's choice(TB has some say in this), I'd go with the bird in the hand mentality. Build the SU brand now, and hope for a nice ranking and a deep tournament run. Having 2 skilled SU bigs on the floor at the same time would be a site for sore eyes. If DC2 is healthy there would be depth added to that.

And wouldnt most of us like to see JB get at least one more NC before he is done?

Defer the sanctions for two reasons:

1. The longer you allow appeals etc. to play out the more likely you get the full benefit in any change in the sanctions.
2. You give yourself another year to rebalance your roster before you have to be limited to 10.

And ain't that just the sad freaking truth? Oh Lord

What if the appeal doesn't work?

Thomas Bryant won't be a one and done player anyway.

He better be or forget Battle.

The man stayed here 40 years. He couldve made millions more elsewhere. I think he is very interested in what happens 3 to 4 years down the road and beyond that. He is syracuse basketball. He cares about his legacy. I think he would've retired sooner if not for the sanctions. so to answer your question, i absolutely do.

Gentleman, is it plausible that JB can play a hand that is not only the best for next season but the future as well? He is here at 70 for a reason.

Why? Because of scholarship count? So many things could happen. DC could actually be healthy and cash in his chance for $ after showing it for one year. TB could as expected leave after 1 year. Chino could realize that maybe he'd like to play some and that even though SU was losing 2 centers that he would still be behind Diagne and Keita. There could be an injury. So many things.

Sure, a lot could change. I'm just thinking of the obvious personnel moves.
