Wildhack Introduction

Would it be crazy to have football sit out a year and give more time for better options to surface?
Yes that would be crazy... just crazy enough to work.

Season 4 No GIF

Our job isn't a job that is in demand. Obviously, JW would want the best guys he could get. I guess, this is it.
I'm surprised because during his press C that JW spoke about all of the interest, all of the calls he had received expressing interest in the position. If that is the case, I find it even more surprising that the three candidates that are being mentioned tonight as finalist were at the top of his list and the best of those that expressed interest in the job. Something doesn't seem right.

Well, you have a Patriot level coach, a position coach and another MAC coach. That does not resonate as power five coaches. I’m just saying he’s going to have a lot of explaining to do. All three are major risks at a time that SU can’t get it wrong.
Successful FCS coaches and MAC coaches are elevated every year. Suggesting otherwise is silly. Position coach is a bit of a head scratcher, but who the hell knows anymore.

I thought John specifically said he was very surprised at the guys who reached out with interest. That tells me the obvious.

JW better hold a press conference before he introduces the new candidate or it could be very uncomfortable. There’s going to be a lot of questions/concerns on the hire. The new hire should not have to sit through that. JW is going to have a lot of explaining to do. These final three candidate are not ACC level coaches. It’s kind of a joke.
Do you actually think the local press is going ask uncomfortable questions (besides Axe)? Remember the people in attendance will be press members and not Syracusefan.com members.

It appears to me there are a bunch of posters who are going to whine and complain about the candidates we are looking at and reject every one of them. No matter what.

And offer nothing as far as alternatIves.

I get it. I fell in love with the idea of having Mullen as our HC. It would have been great. Props to John, who apparently did everything he could possibly do to make it happen.

But it didn’t.

We can‘t just shut the football program down. We have to find someone. None of these guys are perfect but we live in an imperfect world. Rarely do we have the opportunity to address a problem with a perfect solution.

It is time to get over the disappointment of the Mullen affair, and move forward now.

Mississippi State has way more money to spend than we do and they just hired an OC with no HC experience.

Experienced highly successful P5 level head coaches are few and far in between. Most schools, including us, have to make due with someone who is not quite where they would ideally be when they are hired.

The known candidates have weaknesses for sure, but also great positives. I bet at least one of these three candidates rumored to be the finalists is going to end up being a very good HC.

The question is, which one is it?

If I had to bet, it would be on Candle. I expect Indiana is going to grab him. If they offer him, he would be foolish not to take that offer. Surprised he has lasted this long without getting snapped up by a P5 school.

Whoever we pick, I am sure we will will watch what the other finalists do over the next 5 years with great interest.
Amen!

If we get the next Dabo, I will be overjoyed. But is it likely?
If we get the next Dabo he will be gone in 3 years which is fine w me. Means we won a title and this guy is off to Tennessee or something

Unlikely but my point was you don’t have to be a former head coach to have success.

Really ?? You think there’s a lack of guys wanting to to be a head a coach making 5 million a year ??

If I was, say - a 45 year old OC looking for a head coaching gig, I would be pretty selective about what job I took. Going to a school with resources comparable to their peers, good administration support, decent fan support - would all be things I wanted to see. Taking a $5MM/yr job at a school where I saw no chance of being competitive and could expect to be fired in 3-4 years wouldn’t be appealing.

The level of risk at Syracuse right now is higher than lots of other schools - I could see guys choosing to wait for what they thought was a better opportunity elsewhere.

I’d take a head coaching gig for $5MM/yr - I’m completely unqualified and would be an unmitigated disaster, but I’d gladly cash that check for a year (and then gladly cash the buyout as well). I’m sure there’s lots of unqualified/undesirable candidates for the job - but the idea a $5MM/yr job alone should be enough to attract “better candidates” (whatever that means) is an unrealistic expectation.

This is all true, but isn't it disappointing that out of the 3 apparent finalists, the 2 with prior head coaching experience were not the choice?
