He almost left to go to a mid major since we were offering mid major money? Or did he almost leave to go to another P6?

Because if we almost lost to him to a P6 and he stayed with Cuse, wouldn't that reject your assertion in this quoted post?
He almost left to a P6 because we were offering mid major money. Until we stumped up more.

So we paid him P6 money, yes? We beat another P6 team for his services and paid him a market value for competing with P6 teams, yes?

So, in the end, we did not pay him mid major money, yes?

They are supposed to beat ND because ND is not good. It is a program in shambles who has won 13 or less games 3 of the last 4 years. That team also doesn't have elite talent, some might argue without burton they dont even have good talent. The fact that they were ahead of syracuse in the ACC poll is an indictment on syracuse, not praise for ND.

The biggest reason this team is underachieving is because the coach built a poorly scouted roster around 2 of the worst defenders in the P5 (possibly the country). It sucks that bells shooting is bad, but why is no one fixing it? GMac fixed JJ's wonk a$$ shot last year, yet no one on this staff can figure out how the "best shooter in the country" cant even get into the low 30%s? Sorry, this has nothing to do with talent and everything to do with coaching. The worst thing for this program is red brings in a great roster and still squanders all the talent. Millions out the door, attendance dropping to embarrassing levels and a easy negative recruiting pitch: "lf you want to improve and win, you dont go to syracuse"
If we’re so much better than why was ND predicted to finish ahead of us in the ACC? This is who we are. Fans want more but until Red upgrades the talent level we are still below ND.

Correct.

A recruiting class now includes:
First years
Portals in
Portals out
If someone goes pro, not Red's issue.

If he can only get high school recruits and not hold onto current talent and can't bring in real external portal talent, he isn't a good recruiter in 2024. To your point, maybe he's a pre-portal coach, but I have seen nothing that shows me he can be the HC in terms of Xs and Os.

And if he isn't a good coach, then what do we have? If he can't drive fundraising? etc etc

You know what they call a leader with no followers? A guy taking a walk.

I get Red is getting year three and of course there is a shot that we turn this around, but everything has consistently said otherwise and people keep saying "wait, wait" and what that amounts to at this point is magical thinking. I'm tired of pointing out that the light has been blinking red for years.

I'd rather just have people say "We don't have the money to fire him. We didn't have the power to hire externally when the time was there. We are making a huge gamble with our basketball program in the current state of athletics and this conference that we can weather this storm and come out the other side as a team that can be back to being expected to be in the top 25 and an NCAAT team. And that's that. You are going to have to suck it up and watch a bad bball team for a bit more on this ongoing streak of bad years."
If Fran can come in to a bad situation and turn things around in one year, why should Red get 3 years, when you have a lot less players.

The football program was in worse shape then the basketball program, but Fran made out OK.
Excuses are for losers ,and if Red doesn't fix it this year he should be gone.

Kentucky and Louisville, which have both won men’s basketball national titles over the past 15 years, spent around 1.7 times more on their respective football programs than men’s basketball during the 2023 fiscal year, according to similar documents.

“I think the perspective from Louisville is a unique one, just because it’s probably one of the few programs in the Power Five that I would contend [basketball] is just as important of a variable as football is in the equation,” Louisville AD Josh Heird said. “Most Power Five programs are going to say, ‘Hey, how do we increase the eyeballs on football?’ But at Louisville, this program, this athletic department was built on the backs of the basketball program, and we’ve got to make sure that our basketball program doesn’t take a backseat to anyone.”

Sounds like JB’s job of bringing in alumni support and donor dollars is going well

I’m sure it is. He travels the country meeting with groups. He also does appearances for university groups like IMPACT at Whitman. His role is fundraising and engagement but I’m sure it’s not NIL driven. It’s school and AD driven.

He was never getting "mid-major money" to come here. The mid-major that I went to and give to their (very transparent) collective had a TOTAL bankroll right around what we were told Eddie was originally getting. Around half a million, IIRC. And that school is much closer to the top of the non-Dayton A10 than the bottom and will be at the top of the MAC, in terms of NIL, next season.

We might not have been NIL rich but we were 10000% not poor enough to justify how bad this team is. Piss poor resource allocation and roster building is the gripe much more than the available funds.

People think we’re just as poor as the Seton Halls, Boston Colleges, Minnesotas, Va Techs of the world (most MMs have less than $1M). Its just poor coaching and poor roster construction thats the primary issues.

What stinks is most of the moves came after Alex Kline was hired. Let's hope he can find better value and fits next off-season. Hope...maybe pray.

Exactly. Shaheen probably has a fraction of our NIL at Seton Hall and I have little doubt that they would punk us anytime, anyplace on effort and coaching alone. Our excuses are just that.

The NIL excuse is tiresome. Look at Iowa St.'s set of portal guys. The best program they snatched a transfer from is St. Mary's. They also picked up guys from programs like Northern Iowa, UNLV, Charlotte, and Buffalo, but they make it work. The much derided Jeff Capel is able to patch bubble-quality teams together and without snagging big fish from the portal.

Yeah, that isn't true I don't believe. Alex better be part of the answer. But it isn't Alex's job to make sure we get back on defense. or get out on a great shooter who we leave wide open in a close game.

Look, the coaching has been at best sub par, at worse, much worse. But the NIL is a problem. Jb spoke about that before he left. I don't think our collective is being near active enough. Do they make phone calls. Grant has made over 100 million in his NBA time. That was before this year where he is making wait for it, 29 million. Have they called him? I have no idea. We have a lot of wealthy alums who would donate if asked. You don't wait for people to call you. You call them. And call them again.

Oh 100%. Just a small part of the puzzle.

Schefty is reporting that Sacramento State has a $50 war chest for NIL. It's football, but it's Sac State for the love of god!
That just can't be true

Grant has been present at NIL events for Red.

I’m not convinced we would be much better if we had another 2 million in NIL. We might have a better point guard and someone besides Lucas Taylor, but we still would have the rest of the same team that plays poor defense and doesn’t appear to play hard. If fans think NIL fix all our problems they are sadly mistaken.
