Coaches follow the money and leveling up their opportunity.

Saying that a team/school will harm their standing with coaches if they fire someone is an old trope that’s never proven true.
You’re not coming to SU to get a huge contract. Money will be an issue trying to get a coach. What we want will cost at least $5 million and SU will never pay that. Not even half that.

Then who cares? If SU isn’t committed to hoops then they might as well just churn through coaches every couple three years and see if one sticks.

And I don’t want a name guy anyway. I want a freaking bulldog who’s moving up, loves the grind, and wants to work 18 hour days. $2.5 mill would be a windfall for that guy.

That’s exactly what will happen.

Ah I did. He was a stud last year and took crap from half the board because he didn't pass enough. Put Judah and Q on this team JJ healthy and we are solid. Crazy that we ended up with Dry Rub and a Carlos. I have no idea what anyone was thinking. Eddie doesn't fit what Red wants to do which is get up and down. Sure, he is a good passer, but he is a half-court player who can't defend the rim. Really bad pick. I know Carlos was the consolation prize but geez the kid should be playing for Maine or Gmac. This roster makes zero sense. Nothing fits.
Judah was never staying past last year. It doesn't matter what people thought of him.

So?

The program is cratering, we need a good coach who can reverse the fortunes. If said coach moves on after 4 or 5 years, then it's incumbent on the athletic department to replace them with an adequate replacement. Unlike what we did last time, hiring a completely unqualified hail Mary for all the wrong reasons.

We'll be in a better position to hire someone new if the program is an attractive option, which is questionable currently.

Or if we have turned it around in 4 to 5 years and other programs come looking we may in be position to pay more then especially if Fran gets football back as well

It won’t. People say that all the time for every team I follow. Can’t fire a guy, no one will want to coach here.

Literally never happens.

FWIW, Autry ain’t gettin fired anyway. He’ll be back next year even if we don’t win again this season. I’m certain of it.

I see no way Red is here if he finishes with 10 wins or less. You can’t keep a coach in his second year that literally has the worst season in the past 55 years of Syracuse basketball. It’s incompetence if he’s allowed to keep his job.

Any coach worth a damn doesn’t care about that BS.Crazy talk!
Ha, I know right? That's why coaches have agents write in buyouts so they get paid when the school tells them they can't coach anymore. The whole bad message to the coaching profession is childs play talk. This is a business everyone knows it.

Donations dry up and you start getting 7-8 thousand fans a game you have to make a move.

I did believe this at the beginning of year and now I am not 100% sure that is the case
That would be the administrations saying they are phoning in the basketball program and I don’t see that happening. I think with conference realignment being so important no way can they take a chance with another down year. They will bring in someone at the very least bring in Hopkins to right the ship.

When there's less than 10k in the dome for every game between now and senior night, the AD will not be able to hide. Money talks and Red is toast.

Dion Waiters highlights came up on my IG the other day and we were ranked in the top 10 in almost every single clip. It's like watching a different sport, and it truly feels like we'll never get back there.

Is this what Nebraska football feels like?
Ugh. Nebraska football is the analogy that always pops in my head when I think of our program and what might be upcoming.

Every year I make a trip up to Syracuse in mid-February to early March, with part of that trip being a Syracuse basketball game with my kids. Last year it was the NC State game - I got tickets in section 123 at about half the face value. With this year being a train wreck, I’ll wait until it’s closer to the game to buy since I’m sure I’ll get them cheap.

Fans aren’t going to keep buying season tickets for a terrible team they don’t want to watch, and they take a huge loss when they sell tickets for a game they can’t go to. If this year turns out to be a disaster and they opt to keep Red, I’d expect attendance next year to be way, way down.

It’s been a long time at this point since Syracuse basketball has been relevant. My 10 year old and 8 year old don’t even think of Syracuse as a power program they should invest any time in - it’s just a once a year trip to see a team that isn’t very good, but for some baffling reason their Dad roots for. The program has been dying for a decade; sticking with a terrible coach after a well under .500 season could be effectively a death blow.

Mike Hopkins? Have we not learned our lesson that we don't have to hire alums?

I think you missed the point. How fast can a turnaround happen in the current state of the league, this is a semi-pro paid league now?

29-days. Because the transfer portal is open for 30.

This is where I'm at. We've long been borderline for the inevitable "super conference" situation and JW and KS seem keenly aware of that. Fran may not have been the *most* expensive hire, but in general they did not skimp on the many pieces of the football redo. I don't think they're going to skimp on the basketball redo either.

I know we've been shrewd for a long time, but that is not the same as broke. I mean if you ask Warren Buffet to buy you a Tomahawk steak I'd assume the answer is no. If you ask him to spend $5M investing your company when there's a good chance it returns $50M in 5 years he's probably going to say yes.

Spending $2,000,000 on a good point guard would solve a lot of problems here.

Indiana basketball is a much better comparison. Living in Bloomington for the last 20+ years, they've never found the right combination since Knight was fired. Sure they've had a few good years (such as the year we beat them when they were a 1seed) but nothing approaching the prior 30 years. By all accounts they should be great... Great venue, state School, deep pocketed alumni, tons a great local talent, tradition, etc. But they've never quite found the formula. It has scared me for years that this was our future.

Yup another good analogy

In theory

But when the offense is just guys standing around, lacks shooters and has very few finishers, what would a high end PG do for this team?

A great PG is a need but there has to be proper coaching, a system and talent around him to be successful.
