Wildhack is on the Clock

Few things from cruising this thread. Overall The timing of all this just sucks.

1. If Autry just had shown any sort of fight and got just 1 real win in the NonCon we could say maybe there’s hope, even though we really know there’s not. Nope each game is worse than the next so each week feels like there is long lasting damage being done to the brand.

2. JJ is out so the rest of the country and a lot of people that tune in every few weeks see that headline and think oh your best player is hurt so that must be it. JJ ain’t saving us and in fact may be part of a deeper problem.

3. There is a very strange dynamic right now where the youth show promise (although with little control) while the veterans are showing they should be sent to mid major teams. Opposite of what most good programs are dealing with.

4. There is a once in generation father son Carmelo / Kiyan thing going on. I’m convinced this will freeze the administration into poor decisions or better to say no decisions with Autry just because they don’t want to rock the boat. We know the recruits won’t save us.

5. As much as we want to say the coaching search will be successful because anyone can do a better job than what we saw this season, that’s just not true. There’s old experienced coaches in P5 that made their bones when the league was much different and then young guys that are up and coming but is that just a few lucky seasons at a mid major programs. We saw Autry be one of the only ACC coaches ever to win 20 games his rookie year in the ACC and look where we are now. This is a terrible time to be desperate to find a new coach. Might as well be trying to hit a 15 on the roulette wheel.

Yea. Terrible timing.

Indiana basketball is a much better comparison. Living in Bloomington for the last 20+ years, they've never found the right combination since Knight was fired. Sure they've had a few good years (such as the year we beat them when they were a 1seed) but nothing approaching the prior 30 years. By all accounts they should be great... Great venue, state School, deep pocketed alumni, tons a great local talent, tradition, etc. But they've never quite found the formula. It has scared me for years that this was our future.
Indiana never got the coach right since Knight. Maybe Sampson would have been it but the violations derailed him.

You can check all the boxes but you still need a great coach at the end of the day if you want to win it all and also be a consistent contender year in and year out.

In theory

But when the offense is just guys standing around, lacks shooters and has very few finishers, what would a high end PG do for this team?

A great PG is a need but there has to be proper coaching, a system and talent around him to be successful.
You are correct. I was high and impulsive when I wrote that.
I don’t understand this horrible offense.

It won’t. People say that all the time for every team I follow. Can’t fire a guy, no one will want to coach here.

Literally never happens.

FWIW, Autry ain’t gettin fired anyway. He’ll be back next year even if we don’t win again this season. I’m certain of it.
Feel like I'm living the same story with Cuse and the Pats right now. Mayo is over his head. So is Red. Fire them both, they're not the guy

That's a really good question.
If you believe Axe which well you know. He seemed pretty sure they want the orange jersey and the program more than any one coach in his after game show. Not like it was specifically discussed but more of a comment in passing.

Also keeping in mind Carmelo knows the old man more than he’ll ever know Autry. That old man is still floating around the halls on campus for better or worse.

The hard truth is we arnt relevant. And the administration needs to realize just how bad things are. The truth is we haven't been even mildly relevant in about 4 years. The rest of the country's P5 looks at this program as an easy W, and has for a while now. People get way to caught up in the past, the distant past, which was the last time we were consistently good. If you ask a senior in high school what they think of Syracuse they don't see Carmelo, they see a program that hasnt made the ncaa tournament while they were in HS and has been mediocre to bad for years. This year isn't an anomaly its what has been coming for a while now because the university has let this happen. The years of paying your coach pennies on the dollar are done. Step up and pay up or let the program wither and die on the vine, those are the options. And if the university can't figure out how to pay for a quality coach when the basketball program is one of the highest revenue generating programs in the country then that something is beyond wrong at the school

I have been saying this for years. The ad has one job, make sure football and basketball has all the resources they need. The Olympic sports and women’s basketball are great but you can’t let those programs drain the two teams that fund it all. Something has been off for years and there needs to be a deep dive on how money is spent.

He got 20 wins with Boeheims team. Don't forget that.

Correction. You said what Wildhacks job description says but his real motivation is to keep his job as AD. I think people forget how dangerously close he was to getting canned. If Fran was a bust and Autry like he is now. Wildhack would be on his way out too.

People keep harping about 20 wins. One of those was vs. D2 Chaminade because we got blown out in Hawaii by Tennessee and Gonzaga. I remember Bill Walton's great line calling the game, "...this is the greatest 7th place game in basketball history..." I miss Bill's humor and wit.

It’s a last-line defense when you can’t make an argument based on a coach’s actual performance. It’s absurd because we’re talking about a team that might be headed for single digit wins - this isn’t Nebraska firing Solich after a 10-3 football season. The idea that letting Red go might scare away good coaches is laughable - although they might not want to come for a bunch of other reasons (one being that JB will get his panties in a bunch if we fire Red and will actively work to sabotage a new hire…).

We may need to acknowledge that JB has gone from a huge asset for Syracuse to a massive
Can we please stop blaming JB. This disaster is fully on Autry. His roster, his lineups and his very poor coaching.

Exactly right. We went 19-12 with 9 blowout losses (15+ points). We were no where near the bubble. Last year was not great and no miracle. This year is a complete and utter disaster. By far the worst Cuse team to lace them up in the past 55-60 years. Embarrassing in all aspects. Can’t even figure out a starting lineup with a week to plan. This is not fixable with Autry and everyone knows it.

Anyone care to discuss what is happening to the Chancellor? Yes, BB is big but could SU have bigger fish to fry?
He’s about to fry himself if some stuff comes out soon. I can’t say this any clearer- THIS GUY HAS TO GO and honestly he’s holding the entire athletic department hostage including JW. We got lucky with Fran and Fran’s efforts to raise money literally changed that program. If he relied on the school for funds, no chance things would be as successful. Autry is out raising money almost every day. It’s actually quite insane how many things he’s attending. His coaching has been poor there’s no question, but Kent is a big big big part of the problem as a whole at the school. I know of some things, dasher brought up great points about the ranking continuing to slide every single year and he has a pet project that he is DUMPING money into.
I know of one other drastic thing that I’m not going to publish here because I know he’s getting into looked into because of it, but it makes a lot of sense that Kent is basically at fault for a lot right now within athletics. The guy is a problem and needs to go and might just get himself fired soon

I know of some of the stuff that has happened behind close doors. But what I don’t know is how any booster or admin on boards with him let this stuff go on and continue to renew his contract this is malpractice by the administration.

This is not good. Bigger problems than hoops and hoops is in a bad place

wow, I knew we got blown out a lot in 23-24 but did not realize it was 9! That's a lot of blowouts, almost a third of the schedule.

Not true, especially if you already have a good job with security. Why take a risk with a knee jerk university!
Riding with a coach for half a century is knee jerk. Letting him hang on through two probation and 10 years longer than we should so he could coach his kids is knee jerk? Hiring a guy from his tree that isn’t qualified is knee jerk?

The dude can’t coach. Not now, not in 5 years. Move on before the Dome is a complete ghost town.

Is the pet project related to eSports? You obviously don’t have to confirm and I have zero inside info. I just know some folks involved in that at SU and my reaction to the resources they are being given is always:

Never should have hired a Hoya to lead our university: it starts and ends with that.

Thanks for the info. With presidents/chancellors, the question is always are they the dog or the tail being wagged (BoT driving things). Which would you say that it is?

The rankings have been tanking, without a doubt. However, to play devils advocate outside of the Ivy's, SU is not alone in NYS (RPI, UR are both tanking as well). NYS politics has also put a lot of pressure on private schools, and IMHO isn't helping them to thrive (I dont want to get into politics).

A lot of times, these are loss leaders (if I am using the term properly) to help with student engagement/enrollment. Unless they are dumping millions into e-sports I wouldn't think this is an issue. But I have no inside info on this at SU.
