WR Nykeim Johnson transferring to Kent St

Johnson is a darn good punt returner but made some questionable decisions at times.

In recent memory I would take Brisly Estime over Johnson. Jamel Riddle was also a good one in the last 20. I don't even know who returned punts for Gump.

No one. I used to watch the returner raise his hand before the kicker's foot hit the ball. i called into his show to complain, (ask) about it. G-Rob replied that when he was at UCLA, they led the country in punt returns one year. I wondered when we'll do that here. We never did.

When a coach tells you about some achievement where he used to coach in answer to a question, it's a sure sign that things are not going well here.

I absolutely hate when coaches do that, is it just be or has dino been doing that more and more recently especially THE jimmy g over and over again

If you really want to be showcased as a punt returner, I suppose it helps to play somewhere where you get s lot of opportunities because the defense forces a lot of punts.

Also one of the most exciting. It's as if MLB decided to make homes runs ground rule doubles to avoid having outfielders injure themselves leaping at the fence to try and catch them. And why make on-sides kicks so difficult? how many players have bene injured on on-sides kicks?

Barely. There are home runs in almost every game (granted they're hit by guys who bat 230 and look like the Michelin Man...)...there are almost never any runbacks past the 25 in an NFL or college games, but lots of flags.

Agree with you on sides kicks.

I think our 1-10 record was a factor. it made us the equivalent of a mid-major with a good player who wants to see what he can do with a really good team, which is obviously not us.

Maybe? You think there’s a spot on a really good team for him that isn’t just kick returner?

I’d bet this ends up being a lateral move closer to home or some other kind of connection.

When you say no one was counting on Queeley, you missed me. ;-) He's been terribly consistent since he showed up. Not slippery like Taj, but a consistent hard worker and fighter. Many of our 1st downs this year, were to him. If nothing else? Queeley is a 3rd down type receiver, imo.

Nykeim will be missed, but I do think Queeley has solidified a role.

Forget about our TEs. I think we've shifted to Y TEs. Hackett(tops in the ACC for pass pro) has moved along to catch some passes to up his stock. I sincerely hope we can keep Benson.
If you look back to last year at this time, few posters here had Queeley as the probable starter. Maybe you knew, but for most it was all about Hendrix. My point is that posters rarely know, at this point in the off-season, which of the young receivers will emerge, but someone usually has surprised us. Custis did very little for 3 seasons, then emerged in 2018 as an effective deep threat. Queeley played on special teams in 2019, with few opportunities on offense, and proved to be OK as a starter. Certainly he has a role now.
Not going to forget about TEs. We have recruited well at that position, with guys who are 6ft 5 or so — compared to Hackett and Benson at 6ft 3 being shorter than most ACC TEs. Benson has straight ahead speed, but Dino tells us he takes a bit to get going.

Everyone is assuming he’s going to a better program to be a punt returner.

Maybe he’s going to a weaker program where he can catch more passes?

With a better line and more effective QB, he'd catch more passes here.

I think if you add an upperclassman/grad transfer outside receiver, and combine that with Queeley, Harris, J. Williams, we'll be in pretty good shape. We definitely need a big target on the outside.

Surprised he didn’t go bigger, but focused on putting some stats up in what was America’s best offense this year.
Do you think he had the chance to go bigger?

Sean Lewis will end up having a better coaching career than Dino. He is proving he knows how to build a program. Dino hasn't as his longest tenure as a head coach is SU and other than one outlier season has been a failure.
Sean will magically turn this kid into a major weapon.

wow, such insight. An small acc caliber athlete has a chance to do great in the Mac where he isnt at such a size disadvantage, the field isn’t as compressed, and his speed advantage will be that much greater.

there’s some deep thinking there Tex.

He dropped a few tunnel screens that would've been 6 this past season. He will do well next season but he certainly left some meat on the bone last year as well.

That said, wish all the best for him and hope he puts up video game numbers next year and cashes some NFL checks. Seems like a great guy and once orange, always orange
