With things quieting down around here, I thought I would check in on the transfer portal to see where things stood, from an SU perspective. It seems like Syracuse is not heavily involved in the portal this offseason, which makes sense given they don't have a ton of glaring needs. There are still some, however, and I thought it would be helpful to see if there are any players who could help the team's fortunes next year. I stole some of these names from the list over at FanLax as there are some good players out there who aren't house hold names (at least not in my house).
1. Nick Turrini - SSDM - Lehigh (Merrick, NY), 16gbs, 5cts: The stats don't jump off the page, but Turrini was a top SSDM for the Mountain Hawks, one of the better defensive teams in the country last year. He's from Long Island, played for Team 91 in high school, and Syracuse has recently gotten players from Lehigh (Cole Kirst, Christian Mule). This would fill a huge need for the Orange. Getting Ryder Ortega in the portal helped, but Turrini would probably be an instant starter next to Carter Rice next year.
2. Griffin Turner - Midfield - Hofstra (Danville, CA), 16 g, 28 a: The Orange don't have a huge need for offensive reinforcements, but Turner looks like he would be a good addition. Second on the team in scoring, the passing numbers really jump out. The Orange need to replace Jake Stevens' 36 points from the midfield. Turner's film reminds me a lot of Stevens in the way he plays very fast and isn't afraid to dodge into the heart of a defense. He looks to be primarily right handed, but looks able to use his right pretty deftly.
3. Owen Murphy - Midfield - Maryland (Medfield, MA) 7g, 5a: The shine has maybe come off Murphy after a rough season last year, but he had 66 combined points between '22 and '23. He's a good shooter who seems to play well when surrounded by talented players. He only shot 17% last year. He's no sure thing, but as a righty he jumped over some other higher producing players. I think he could be an effective second line midfielder if given the right role.
4. Luke Nestor - Midfield - Salisbury (Salisbury, MD) 59g, 16a - Nestor is big at 6'2 205. He's got a big shot and obviously isn't afraid to sling it. With DIII players you aren't exactly sure how their games will translate, but with his size Nestor seems like a safe bet. The only thing is, he is a lefty, which SU has a lot of. I also couldn't tell if he played a lot of attack for the Gulls last year. Again, if he could come in as a second line middie, I think he'd be a good addition.
5. Dutch Furlong - Attack - Bucknell (Baltimore, MD) - 21g, 35a: I am using Furlong's point total from '23 since he didn't play much in '24. He also had a 56 point season in 2022. The issue with Furlong, like Nestor, is he's a lefty and the Orange again already have a bunch of them. That said, he might be the type of attackman who could take pressure of Spallina. The Patriot League transition doesn't always work (as we saw with Mule), so that's why he's down at number five.
6. Andrew Greenspan - Faceoff - Notre Dame (Scarsdale, NY) 17-30 : Greenspan was a top recruit who is stuck behind Will Lynch. Not a lot of playing time to judge him off of, but you have to like the recruiting credentials. Given he entered the portal with a no-contact tag, I am surprised he's "still on the board". If Mason Kohn does come back to Syracuse, this definintly doesn't seem to be a need. If he doesn't, the staff could sell Greenspan on the shared rolls that Kohn and Mullen had last year.
7. Koleton Marquis (Hopkins), Ryan DiRocco (Army), Gavin Dallas (Denver) - I rolled all three here together since they haven't seen much playing time. Marquis has been discussed a lot already so I won't say much more about him. DiRocco went to Haverford and is a natural hard dodging attackman. He had almost balanced goals and assists numbers in high school. My issue with him might be size (5-10, 170) and if that can translate to DI. Dallas has good size at 6'1 185 and can shoot pretty hard. Not overly concered he didn't see much time for Denver as they had a pretty stacked roster last year. That said, all three of these guys would be higher risks for the Orange than the players listed above, given that they don't have much playing time. Would SU be better off nurturing some of the younger players already on the roster (McIntee, Anderson, Kellogg, Hottle, O'Farrell, McCarthy, etc)? I think so, but they felt worth mentioning.
I think the only player the Orange truly "need" right now is probably Turrini. The roster is in very good shape. I didn't have to include any long poles because that area seems to already have a ton of depth. Goalie is a position they have been recruiting well and it looks like it is McCool's job to lose at this point. In a perfect world I'd love to have another attackman that could help take some pressure off of Spallina, especially a righty. That doesn't seem to be available this year, but as we've discussed, the Orange have options (Mostly moving Anderson or Leo to attack). The big thing is replacing the scoring void that Stevens and Mule leave behind. Some of that can be picked up by freshmen (Anderson), some by returning players producing more next year (I don't think Birtwistle, Thomson or English reached their ceilings last year).
But it could be helped by bringing in a veteran player. If Anderson sees the field early next year, there is essentially one open spot for playing time. Obviously reading the above, it seems pretty apparent that the only spot available would be on the second line midfield. That might not be enticing for a transfer, especially a grad student, but you never know (especially the way SU plays both lines evenly). Anyways that's a lot words, hopefully someone else has an opinion on the matter.
