Everyone knows the math. And everyone knows that Miami, SU and BC would have accepted invites to join the ACC in 2003 if Gov. Warner hadn't gotten involved. Everything that followed was a hastily planned cluster.

It seems to me that some of you fail to grasp that math. Most or all of you fail to understand that unless VT had played VA state politics hard and well, then UVA never would have been pressured to intercede to get VT into the ACC. UVA voted YES to 12 only if VT were voted in as #10. If UVA had not been pressured, then UVA would have voted NO to expanding to 12. If there remained 3 NO votes for going to 12, then Miami is added as #10. And nobody could have been added with Miami.

The Miami Plan to add Miami, BC, and Cuse at once never had the 7 votes required to make it happen.

Only 2 no’s couldn’t keep SU out. Duke and unc were no’s until Warner threatened the UVa president and applied a lot of pressure. Several straw votes were taken on schools and SU had the 7 yeses until Warner was able to flip UVA. Go see what Debbie Yow and John Swofford said after their visit to SU. It was so much a lock that the formal announcement had been drafted.

Not at all. In the late 70s, the northeast could easily have moved away from the “We’re Independent, and we’re proud” mentality. PSU was on the brink of winning national championships, Pitt won a NC. Combined with SU, WVU, BC, Rutgers, Temple and maybe a couple more, the window was there. The offer was on the table. Paterno nixed the deal unless he could keep football out of the all-sports conference. He killed it. This was prior to the BE.

Completely disagree with this. With the formation of the a conference in the late 70s, and then the start of ESPN in their backyard, northeast football would have gained a huge boost, just the way BE basketball did. That was plenty of time.

We played a year with 11 because BC couldn't get a release from the Big East. They were in but had to wait.

So what are the odds that 3-5-5 pods happen? There's a stunning lack of variety in scheduling and the ability to play every team home and away over four years seems perfect.

They have about 6 months to figure it out--the 2023 schedule will come out next January.

The post-meeting comments repeated the mantra that the league would work with its media partners (ESPN) on scheduling issues. The conjecture is that the league is looking for a way to increase media revenues, and that letting ESPN give input on football matchups might be the only way to pry extra $$$ out of the World Wide Leader.

Had to give the BE a year's notice that you're leaving.

Miami and Va Tech notified the BE prior to June 30, 2003 that they would be leaving at the end of the 2003-04 season (officially July 1, 2004).

BC wasn't voted in until later, so they couldn't leave the BE until July 1, 2005.

If you had a home field that seats even just 60K and you filled it almost every week, then that answer would make sense. But you do not, and your local TV market is very small, and there is the glaring history of NYC people seeing upstate NY as akin to a foreign country, a backward foreign country.

If Syracuse did become NY's CFB team, then Syracuse would gain a good deal of clout within the sport. That cannot come to pass unless Syracuse is playing at least 1 game biannually in NYC - a game that would matter to more than a handful of NYC people. As you have so many alums living within a 2 hour drive of NYC, and Miami also has a large number of alums living in the area, playing each other in NYC could be very good for both.

Syracuse was, is, and always will be NY’s CFB Team before, during, and after playing games in NYC.

I don't think teams were ready pre Big East Basketball to form an Eastern conference, especially Miami (who wasn't good at Football yet) and FSU. It needed to be done in the late 1980s. Without Miami and FSU, Penn State eventually leaves the conference for the B1G anyway.

Lately, there has been a lot of talk of having Georgia Tech play UVa instead of Clemson (under the original list they were the only team that played Clemson and FSU every year). If that happens, then Louisville would get VPI, Pitt, and Clemson. Their fans would rather play VPI than UVa. One of the reasons being VPI is 100 miles closer than UVa.

Really don't think it's going to make any difference. With the way the SEC and Big 10 are everything will implode by 2025. It would be better for schools like Miami, Florida St, and Clemson to join the semi pro league with full time players and let the rest of us have a different type of league.

Definitely. I think the semi-pro league is not going to require their players to attend class, just like Mexican soccer players on Pumas and Tigres of the top division don't attend the schools that own the teams. When (not "if") that happens, the schools that do require their players to attend class should refuse to play them. Watching 2-8 Alabama play 3-7 Auburn will be must-see TV, no?
