After losing against Miami, we're right back on the bubble. However, history has shown 7 wins get you in. I thing we get 4 more wins. I also think the number to get outside the acc 3 game sewer is 6 wins.
The progression is mind blowingWe've gone from:
I truly wonder how much further this program will fall.
- Top 4 tourney seed (it cannot get any worse next year)
- Top 8 tourney seed (it cannot get any worse next year)
- Mentioned on bubble list for tourney (it cannot get any worse next year)
- Let's be mentioned on the bubble (it cannot get any worse next year)
- AccT bubble (it cannot get any worse next year)
They are better than us.Keep an eye on NC State. Our game against them might end up being a tie breaker game. Thankfully they are trending downward.
Yeah, not sure what’s going on at NC state, but they have been losing a lot of semi close games. They are better than us.
Burton played when we beat them.Yeah, not sure what’s going on at NC state, but they have been losing a lot of semi close games.
SU by a few different stats is one of the three worst teams in the ACC. I think the wins against ND without Burton, Cal without Stoja & the 3OT game against BC make our record look a little better than it should.
That’s right, the tale of two halves and a major comeback.Burton played when we beat them.
Moving away from the zone wasn’t the issue. Failing to move to and being able to coach an effective man to man defense is the issue. The first mistake Red made was thinking the zone was the problem. The zone was our identity. What is easier... scoring the 65 points necessary to beat a team scoring 60... or scoring the 90 points necessary to beat a team that scored 88?
What is our defensive identity now? I mean... other than being quite clearly incapable of doing it well. I do not care what anyone says... when our zone was clicking, we were good defensively and forced other teams to beat us. I'd rather have a top 5 zone defense than the 300th best M2M offense.
Yeah, that was the brew and gummies talking. Now sober, I see 2 more likely, possibly 3. However, after last night's game, any loss is probable. As for getting into the acc tourney, we should only need one more win, two wins would be a lock.4 more wins? That seems extremely optimistic for a team that barely beat BC, lost to Miami and got whacked by Duke in its last 3 games.
We have 2 pick em's keft.
2 moderate dogs (5 points)
2 big dogs (10 points or more)
0 more wins is statistically more orobable than 4 wins. (not that I expect either to happen)
Autry was part of coaching the zone for many years. Maybe he is not the guy to teach M2M, making it logical to just keep the zone and do what you know best. What good were all of JB's years of tutoring? JB recruited the zone, taught the zone, adjusted the zone on the fly, etc. Might as well have gone outside the program if we were going to abandon the signature/identity of the program.Moving away from the zone wasn’t the issue. There are literally 323 D1 teams that play better defense than us. It’s inexcusable how bad it is. And guess what, it was bad last year too. Red is incapable of coaching defense (and he’s not much better at coaching offense)
All the bad mouthing of us playing zone. If we were still playing it we would have more winsThe first mistake Red made was thinking the zone was the problem. The zone was our identity. That was the impetus for hiring Englstaad. His teams played very good man to man D. Time to team him with Kline to get the right dogs in here to play this way. At least that's the plan.Autry was part of coaching the zone for many years. Maybe he is not the guy to teach M2M, making it logical to just keep the zone and do what you know best. It would be like hiring the defensive coordinator under Bill Belichik and then saying you are going to do not do the things that he did. What good is that? You are hiring someone to tap into whatever knowledge BB was able to hand down. Apply that to any mentor/tutor. You might as well not consider the mentor if the tutor just wants to do it his way. Am I missing something?
Maybe Englstaad should be the coach then. If the coach cannot teach the defense he wants to run and has to bring someone in, that is even worse. Of course, as bad as the defense is, I am not sure Englestaad has solved anything. That was the impetus for hiring Englstaad. His teams played very good man to man D. Completely agree - that just makes sense. However, he would have gotten killed if he kept the 2-3. Him making it clear that we were moving to M2M created a buzz and many felt a sense of relief.Autry was part of coaching the zone for many years. Oh well, at least he avoided being killed. People love him now. The perfect cure for getting killed is beating better teams, not being blown out by great teams, blowing out terrible teams, and avoiding embarrassing upsets.Completely agree - that just makes sense. The reality is that many of us wouldn't mind if he kept the zone as a primary defense as long as we would switch out of it from time to time. That was the problem with Boeheim the last few years... he wouldn't change anything. We would rarely press teams either. When our zone was REALLY good, it would be suffocating when we had guys who could trap and create turnovers.
Come on now. Gait let's Pat March run the offense completely so should we fire Gary Gait?Maybe Englstaad should be the coach then. We have 12-15 roster spots. How hard is it to find a guy that can sit in the center of the zone for 12 minutes and block a few shots before fouling out? Craig Forth did it for 4 years and McNeil was better than him defensively. We had very good teams despite getting nothing out of that position other than almost as many blocks or fouls as points.
Recruits will not come for the zone? Since when??? Since JB lost his edge? Maybe. But it was that and not the zone that was the problem.
If he drops the program to new lows, then absolutely. Lacrosse is not my sport... but from the periphery, it sure seems closer to football with offensive and defensive specialists. Basketball--everyone is a midfielder.Come on now. Gait let's Pat March run the offense completely so should we fire Gary Gait?
