They can have connections all they want until the NCAA changes the process for transferring the school would have grant their release.
The school wouldn't grant any releases before a new potential staff could talk to the family and kids.
As I would expect. The kid was under-recruited and our coaches used the online recruiting services and found the top uncommitted kid who would fit their system.FWIW if you follow any of Dungey's family members on twitter they are very pro Shafer.
Duke invested in Cutcliffe. Duke has way more potential than its results under Roof and other coaches. Duke can be the Stanford of the East coast.I still think this is a job Shafer can handle. There's been plenty of examples of coaches having sustained success after multiple losing seasons. (Mac, Cutcliffe) I think Syracuse fans need to look in the mirror and realize what kind of program we are in the current state. This wouldn't be an easy fix for a coach no matter who it is. The goal should be to be the best football conference in the North East, and I think if we change coaches again it is effectively starting over. We had a facilities bump with the IPF, and we should get another with a new stadium/dome renovation in the near future.
I see a lot of posters are losing their minds, wanting to go after good recruiters who haven't won at schools with better recruiting classes than what we get now. If they couldn't win with supposedly more talent than we have, how are they going to win here?
I think we need to look at Duke as a model. I know we have more history here for football, but as a school they are most like us in this conference. (Small/Private) Cutcliffe was 9-31 his first five years in the ACC at Duke. I know we have a had a few winning seasons here and there, but we basically haven't been relevant since Freeney went to the NFL. This has to be one of the 5 most difficult jobs right now in the P5.
There's been some clear improvement in the team from what I have seen. I know the W/L results aren't there, but I at least don't go to the dome expecting to leave at the half anymore down 28-3. This was/is going to be a long fix no matter who is coach, and with Syracuse's history you can't guarantee that we will/can hire a coach better than Shafer. I think the bigger issue is we need to focus on having a great staff. That means we must pay Shafers assistants to ensure we have the best position coaches possible to help him. This isn't just about Shafer, but the entire staff. If football is a priority, assistants need to be paid to ensure we are getting the best we can get.
FWIW if you follow any of Dungey's family members on twitter they are very pro Shafer.
I agree. It is being brought out to combat people who want a change. I don't want to think about losing any players. If we make a change then it becomes part of the discussion.I absolutely hate the fact that people are throwing around a 19 year old's name with a bunch of what if's and transfer BS.
Get a grip. Pro SS or Anti doesn't matter. When you assume you make an...

I love Syracuse but a Duke or Stanford degree is worth a lot more. Duke/Stanford can go for those kids looking for a really quality education top 10 school nationally and still play big boy football. Syracuse degree is a valuable degree but its nowhere near as valuable as a top 10 school degree.
I don't believe Shafer has the resume that Cutcliffe had before he got the Duke job and they allowed for patience. I think the Syracuse administration has to invest in football fully and give a total budget of 5-6 million for a new HC and assistant coaching staff and stop being penny pinchers. As we are getting what we have paid for in SS and his staff which are the 2nd lowest paid in the ACC.

Acosta has been the main recruiter for every NJ kid and has been expanded into the FL. I know nothing about the rest of the assistants outside of Lester who should be given major credit for Dungey.Cutcliffe was fired at Ole Miss one year after Eli was drafted. So he didn't go to Duke with a glowing resume. His resume was coaching both Mannings.
I'm not comparing degrees here, but the current staff does but a big emphasis on "student athlete" here. We aren't letting in just anybody, especially after the sanctions. I think even Boeheim glossed over certain recruits that have been in our wheelhouse lately.
Assistants are a key here. People are quick to blame Shafer, but I'm not sure how much help he has on staff outside of Bullough/Daoust.
Of course they are, their son is the start QB as a true freshmen on an ACC team, would you expect anything different?

Cutcliffe went 43-29 at Ole Miss.
His successors since he left Ed Orgeron went 10-25, Houston Nutt went 24-26, Hugh Freeze is 30-17. Freeze has turned it around.
It took Ole Miss two unsuccessful HC hires to undo the effect of firing Cutcliffe.
He was/is a damn good FB coach.
Shafer doesn't come close to Cutcliffe's resume. I am all for patience if I believe in a coach. I don't believe in this coach. We are praying for 6 wins every year and every 4 years 7-8 wins I believe.
I want a coach who will use as a springboard and win games and then leave. I don't care about stability at the HC spot anymore.
Seriously, there are mothers that support their child murders. Why wouldnt you think any of the current team members would be upset if HCSS was let go.
The truth of the matter is, you got a new guy in here, and the team suddenly started winning, they would would forget about HCSS pretty quickly.

Think. A Mom sends her son across the country (trust the staff) and the kid takes a scary hit (trust that staff) and another (still trusts the staff).
I don't think it's crazy to think that it matters. Reason for retaining him as HC? I don't think so. But the love from family members and kids is a plus. There is no downside.

Agree.
That's not the point. The point is family/player support is always a positive for the HC. There is no downside. But that support isn't a given. So it should be evaluated along with the other 100 variables.
I've said it another thread- people have their pitchforks out now but there are still 5 games to be played. Maybe Shafer uses this as a rallying point and we come out guns blazing and win 2-3 more and make all this hand wringing look silly at the end of the season.
We can be concerned but let's let this play out and let the AD do what he was hired to do.
