The school wouldn't grant any releases before a new potential staff could talk to the family and kids.

I was simply responding to your questioning Heater on how he would know what Dungey was thinking. Whether or not the kids would actually leave no one knows but it is the sentiment that they are stating now.

FWIW if you follow any of Dungey's family members on twitter they are very pro Shafer.

As I would expect. The kid was under-recruited and our coaches used the online recruiting services and found the top uncommitted kid who would fit their system.
Dungey should be loyal to the staff. However, that doesn't change the fact the school decision makers should make their decision without fear of player transfers.

I will say-if Shafer comes back, I hope he's very loyal to the school. I don't think you'll find a more supportive fan base for a coach with his record.

I still think this is a job Shafer can handle. There's been plenty of examples of coaches having sustained success after multiple losing seasons. (Mac, Cutcliffe) I think Syracuse fans need to look in the mirror and realize what kind of program we are in the current state. This wouldn't be an easy fix for a coach no matter who it is. The goal should be to be the best football conference in the North East, and I think if we change coaches again it is effectively starting over. We had a facilities bump with the IPF, and we should get another with a new stadium/dome renovation in the near future.

I see a lot of posters are losing their minds, wanting to go after good recruiters who haven't won at schools with better recruiting classes than what we get now. If they couldn't win with supposedly more talent than we have, how are they going to win here?

I think we need to look at Duke as a model. I know we have more history here for football, but as a school they are most like us in this conference. (Small/Private) Cutcliffe was 9-31 his first five years in the ACC at Duke. I know we have a had a few winning seasons here and there, but we basically haven't been relevant since Freeney went to the NFL. This has to be one of the 5 most difficult jobs right now in the P5.

There's been some clear improvement in the team from what I have seen. I know the W/L results aren't there, but I at least don't go to the dome expecting to leave at the half anymore down 28-3. This was/is going to be a long fix no matter who is coach, and with Syracuse's history you can't guarantee that we will/can hire a coach better than Shafer. I think the bigger issue is we need to focus on having a great staff. That means we must pay Shafers assistants to ensure we have the best position coaches possible to help him. This isn't just about Shafer, but the entire staff. If football is a priority, assistants need to be paid to ensure we are getting the best we can get.

I think the Syracuse administration has to invest in football fully and give a total budget of 5-6 million for a new HC and assistant coaching staff and stop being penny pinchers. As we are getting what we have paid for in SS and his staff which are the 2nd lowest paid in the ACC.

I agree. It is being brought out to combat people who want a change. I don't want to think about losing any players. If we make a change then it becomes part of the discussion.

Agreed, but as stated on another thread, a coach that is on shaky ground is never good for attracting or keeping players in the program. As long as Shafer is here, and is on shaky footing as some people believe there are going to be rumors about players.

He was/is a damn good FB coach.

Shafer doesn't come close to Cutcliffe's resume. I am all for patience if I believe in a coach. I don't believe in this coach. We are praying for 6 wins every year and every 4 years 7-8 wins I believe.

I want a coach who will use as a springboard and win games and then leave. I don't care about stability at the HC spot anymore.

The truth of the matter is, you got a new guy in here, and the team suddenly started winning, they would would forget about HCSS pretty quickly.

I agree and hear what you are saying, but nobody knows who the coach is that will win games. All I hear is people wanting Shafer gone, and replacing him with an assistant somewhere or a retread who recruits well, but can't coach his talent. Who can we bring in that will guarantee us better success than him, and is the University willing to spend the money on a staff to commit to a winning football program.

I could very easily see Shafer get fired and see us go backwords to the G-Rob days. It could happen here, especially if we hire someone over their head and not willing to grind.

Agree. Pitt has run through coaches year by year and made a bowl in everyone of them. We have had far fewer and can't get out of our own way at times. I don't care if a new coach comes in and wins and then leaves. So be it. Just win. If we have 10 coaches in 10 years but make a bowl in each one of them, how many people will be upset, outside of the AD in charge of hiring.

That's not the point. The point is family/player support is always a positive for the HC. There is no downside. But that support isn't a given. So it should be evaluated along with the other 100 variables.

lets be honest, FSU and Lville are winnable games - wish they were at home, but they are winnable.

NC state and BC, I almost expect to win.

Clemson is at home so its not a guaranteed loss. In fact, they still haven't Clemsoned. It may as well happen vs us. I see up going 7-5, maybe 8-4.
