Surprised by the recent flood of offers to JCOS.

Seems like we are scrambling to put a class together, which seems weird.

Give me Miller and Walker (C and MLB), one of the other OL -- that is it. Everyone else should be high school kids ...

seems like maybe they could use a closer ...

In a word: No.

I don't know how many silent verbals we might have, but there really aren't many spots left in this class. I think the couple of JUCOs are simply filling the last few remaining needs.

I don't hate JUCO's like most. If they are better than what we anticipate having at the positions or would provide a rotational player right away, then why not? I get their eligibility is the concern but I haven't had any reason not to trust the staff, yet.

do we know if these are jucos who can come in jan or come in the summer?

No - because you should believe in their evaluation and the fact that they are working to fill the roster needs that can only be speculation from this side of the fence. Let them do their jobs and see what happens when it's all said and done.

I know that Wayne Williams (commit) and Joe Walker have 4 years to play 3. Those types of JUCOs I dont mind at all.

when we start looking at jucos the last week of jan or at the start of summer you know how much we are trying to fill a roster

No. Because we are still building. It shouldn't matter if they give a kid a scholarship off the street for one year - if he can play and help win games why should we worry about it?

Signs we are and have been scrambling:
Small number of summer commits (compared to all rivals)
Whiffed on early offers to WRs, DBs, OL (committed elsewhere)
Small number of official visits lined up in December (other than early commits plus a very small handful, Laray Smith, EO, one or two others)
Coaches calling on an array of JUCOs -- several of whom have offers and visits elsewhere.

But it could work out. JUCOs at SS, big LBs, DE, OL could help immediately as we step up to ACC. JUCOs want to play right away -- we can offer that. Coaches proved last year that they can scramble and land help.

Next year, coming off a strong finish and a bowl, we should do better with HS prospects.

It isn't ideal, but we were coming off a

I will take any players we can get if they have the possibility of seeing the field.

Isn't it 3 to play 3? They get 5. Clock starts 1st year when they play. Sit out 2nd year. Then 3 more?

I'd rather chase and miss out on "better" recruits than in years past, than get the same 1 - 2 star recruits in years past. If that means wiffing on these better recruits and turning to JUCO's, I could care less.

I have no problem with bringing in a few JUCOs if they can contribute. Having said that, i am concerned with how many we have offered and how late we seem to be offering.

This is where I stand on the issue.

Mungwa's departure and Curtis' injury created a couple of openings perfectly suited for a couple of 2/3 year players.

Yep. I don't think there's any doubt that the staff has missed on some A list targets and, together with roster attrition, that has contributed to the Juco offers. I think anyone trying to paint these moves any other way is deluding themselves. BUT, as you point out, it doesn't necessarily spell doom and gloom. Some of these guys could turn out to be better pickups in the short and perhaps even in the longterm than the A listers they missed on. If I had my druthers, though, I'd rather have those A-list HS recruits making up the rest of this class.

Yes. Could mean nothing and they are seen as 2 year contributors. But it can also indicate they aren't happy with some current guys due to step in or we missed in this class with a lot of guys.

This. We are fine, and I continue to believe that our recruiting is on the up and up.

This year's class may not be quite as good from top to bottom as last year's, but I feel like Allen/Wilson are key guys - especially Allen. Gus Edwards and Wayne Williams are also highly sought after guys, not to mention who we will end up with at the end.

let it be written, let it be done

Well, we aren't fine yet, and if we end up fine, it will be a big credit to what the coaches accomplished in December & January.
Sure, we have 4 or 5 good HS prospects (Edwards, Allen, Hodge, Provo & Wilson) and a couple of others who may be OK; Rutgers has 12 of the same quality covering all bases; Pitt has 14, again covering all bases. They have star HS linemen; we have none. They landed DBs; we have none.

We have some potential among remaining HS prospects, but our candidates are also looking elsewhere.
The top JUCOs we are pursuing haven't jumped our way yet; most of the ones we want are also visiting elsewhere.

Again, it could come out OK -- just saying our coaches are still working hard and we need some magic in the next few weeks.

Really what is needed is a breakout year. Too bad it didnt happen this year like a 9-10 win season and a trip to the Sugar bowl but things happen for a reason. Marrone's system right now is no better than a 7 win regular season. I dont know how we will fare in the ACC next year with a new QB, but we really need another bowl game season with 6-7 wins. 2-3 years from now looks like our next window for a breakout season.

I want the best players available to be the ones that are going to SU. I have a lot of faith in Marrone and staff evaluations and if a JC kid grades out to be a 7 as a junior or soph and the high school kid projects out to be a 5 or so when they are a soph or junior, you go with the juco. Obviously depth and position may play a factor as well and an older kid in theory should be able to fill that spot better than a kid just out of high school.
