Coach Search Options after Autry

Skipped ahead 30+ pages since last night. Can't keep up.

The one thing I loved about this thread is that it shows the passion we all have for Syracuse basketball, and that we all really do care who the next coach is.

It doesn't change the point I made, though. I think Siena has only beaten one team [IIRC] that is above .500 this year.

I get that you can only play the teams in front of you on your schedule, but I think the overall record is a bit deceiving when you look at the W/L record of the teams they've played.

I would have to look but I think they have beaten 5 or 6 teams over 500.
But, of course, the teams in their league all have the same deficiency in talent so it makes sense the bigger conference teams carve them up.
For me, what is important is what they do with the players they have.
Can they get them to overachieve or underachieve?
Siena is second in their league so seems to me he is doing ok.
Gerry gets his guys to play tough, never surrender, put it all on the line ball.
Red gets his guys to play creampuff soft, roll over, lets think about the catering food after the game ball.

I suspect that Hop is worlds better than Red, not sure how he would compare to Gerry.
But again Hop cant be all that bad if he won 2 coaches of the year in Washington.
They dont give those things out as door prizes.
You have to earn it.

IF they go with Hop, it better not be some five year contract with a big buyout again. And it should 100% be performance based.

I understand that. I just wish we could get all the potential donors together and hire the best coach. We would be back on the top tier in no time.

Dash, please share this with someone who has some sway in this. This is so depressing that only Hop can get these donors to come out of the woodwork. Why don’t they back an actual proven head coach with modern offensive and defensive systems?

On the other hand, let's face it, there is a number where we would have to hire Hop
or just about anyone that could raise it. Let's say 50 million a year. My Saudi Prince.
At that number, we would have to hire that guy.

Yup, now I just hope he can find his version of Luke Murray as an ass’t coach. Or just go get Murray himself if we have all this $$$. If Murray came and transformed ‘Cuse’s offense, he could pick where he wants to head coach in a year or two.

Hopkins. Nor is anyone else that I see giving information. But there seems to

I actually agree with this. Both UNC and Kansas have their Helms flags flying right with their
tournament winners.

For the Hop supporters: So if you were running a business and had a manager who over a number of years had shown he could not get results at an acceptable level, you'd just throw more money at the department to solve the problem?

Let me turn that question around.
If you were running a business and it was failing, do you think you'd be successful convincing a great manager to hop on board if there wasn't adequate funding? Doubt it.
I wish we had a third option but if presented with only those two, I'd have to gamble on taking the money and giving it to Hop.

I don't know how many get second chances after failing at a high major in their only go round as a collegiate head coach. Usually it's either prove you can build a winning team in the low and mid-majors and then get a major job where you either succeed or drop back down or retire. In the last 30 seasons, I would bet that fewer than 5 coaches have had a second chance after going 70-84 in five seasons.

So, since I'm no longer paying for stathead, I went to gemini and asked.

"In the last 30 years, how many D1 NCAA basketball head coaches have had five seasons with a cumulative record under .500, were then fired from the first head coaching job, and hired into a new high major program to be the head coach?"​

Only Lane Kiffin gets to fail upwards repeatedly.

To his credit, he finally righted the ship, has sustained success and became a truly solid coach once he went to Florida Atlantic.

Hmmm, maybe there's something to be said for dropping down a notch or two.

The point remains, the loser of this little game, will not join the other side. I wish they would. But i will believe it when I see it.

Probably true, unfortunately. But the point is there is some concern that Melo’s enthusiastic support is tied to some expectations for Kiyan that might not be there with a different coach.

Great, but I don't think Melo's money should allow him to make terrible decisions and hold the University hostage, like hiring a terrible coach with a track record of losing. That is reckless and dumb to be allowed.

If it is, take your ball and go home, and these are my options:

Melos 1 time 30 million + Terrible coach + Kiyan featured
or
Lally (insert number here lets guess 8 million) + Up and Coming coach with a nice track record with new ideas and no ties to anything

I am taking the second option 100 times out of 100 because it gives Syracuse the best chance long term.
