Column: Leaving Big East a Disaster for Syracuse (and others)

This is really easy to play out, ask UCONN if they want to swap places with us.

Would they leave all the Big East has to offer to go to the ACC?

If the Big East is so important, to a team that has four chips especially, they would of course stay!

But we all know what the answer would be. No one in their right mind would swap places with them.
ACC kept us on the big boy table.

It’s the 3rd most powerful conference behind the SEC and B1G.

Is it really that "foreign?" Miami/VT/BC/Pitt/Louisville are all here. It's like we are a kid whose neighborhood was redistricted to a new school, but plenty of other neighbor kids made the transition also.
Yes it is foreign. I don’t care about Miami and VT in hoops. And in football we play them, what, every 4 years? They were our two biggest rivals in the Big East, now they may as well be in a different conference. Shiz, we play ND more often than we do those guys.

BC and Pitt football are below average but own us somehow. BC basketball is a joke. Pitt hoops had their time in the sun but then they screwed up their post Dixon hire and are back to pre 2000 form.

Louisville was fun when they had Pitino and we were meeting up w them in the garden for the BET. Now they are just another team on the schedule like Wake or GT or NC ST. I don’t care about those programs, the towns they’re in, or their history. Why would I?

Don’t you miss the yearly WARS against UConn and/or Georgetown 3 times a year? Don’t you miss playing WVU for the Schwartzwalder? Don’t you miss the history with northeast programs like Nova, SH, Providence, St John’s, Rutgers?

That’s Syracuse to me. New York’s college team. We had our league, we had our rivals. We had charm.

We aren’t Syracuse anymore. We are Wal-Mart.

The author stated that Syracuse made the right move for football. The move has to affect recruiting for basketball. Kids in the tri-state area used to go to Syracuse and play almost all of their games in the Northeast and the fans could catch home or away games fairly easily. Now SU plays in a conference based in North Carolina which revolves around UNC-Duke. The Big East Tournament is the crown jewel and there is no tournament like it. That's a huge nut to give up.

I really don't miss pc sh rutgirls st John's at all. We still play gtown every year and have played uconn a few times. We could play them.next year in Atlantis.

"Xavier, Creighton and Butler have benefited from joining a high-major, their recruiting and visibility skyrocketing"

Butler went to the championship game two years in a row in the Horizon conference.
They haven't been past the Sweet 16 since joining the Big East and are in the midst of their 2nd losing season in 3 years.

This article is a train wreck.

Losing Mike Hopkins is the biggest reason our recruiting has gone down.

I
I don’t disagree with that. But being in the ACC has hurt us.

I can feel it every time I hear Mike Gminskis voice, a Mellow Mushroom commercial, or see 20 infomercials a game for absurd workout equipment.

Georgetown and UConn stink. St. John’s has stunk for 20 years. I never cared about SH and Providence any more than Pitt or BC. I never cared about Rutgers, period.

LOL at trashing every former BE team in the ACC and pining for some Rutgers. Good stuff.

Yes. You won't find many posters who are a bigger advocate of playing some combination of UConn/Gtown/Nova/St Johns every year than I am.

I would love to have regular trips to the Garden/DC/Philly.

Everyone misses this. But this doesnt exist anymore. Georgetown hast been GEORGETOWN for like 25 years now.

Its time to move on.

I love the Big East tournament... but let’s be honest it’s not the same even if we were back in. Sure, UConn/Nova/GTown games are great. But does anyone care about playing PC, Hall, StJohns, DePaul, Creighton, etc? A lot of our best BET battles were with teams that aren’t even in the BE anymore. GTown is in the dumps and UConn still hasn’t proven anything with Hurley

ACC is loaded every year. Nova is the only BE team that’s done anything of note lately. The ACC has had better programs of late and it’s not even close. Creighton has been the second best team for like the last 3 years and they haven’t been to a S16 since the 70s. PC, Hall, StJohns, DePaul have been irrelevant for a while.

It hurts recruiting, but that’s it. The teams are better in the ACC and IMO, way more enjoyable to watch

When fans can go back to the Dome, take a long look around, and realize that if we hadn't joined the ACC none of those renovations would have been possible.
Ca$h is King.

It’s impossible to evaluate the BE teams because they really aren’t in the BE anymore.

They are in the bombed-out-and-depleted-little-not-east

Yes. When all they do is talk about “the old days” whenever you play any of those teams, it kinda shows that it’s not really a big deal anymore.

Ya the acc commercials are an abomination. But you don't determine what conference you.should be in based on commercials. Look at it this way we are always on tv now. Big East I remember a handful of times having to sit in front of my laptop or phone trying to find the game.

It's all about recruiting.

Yes, we care about playing PC, SJU, SHU just as we cared about it since 1979. All teams have ups and downs but the BET is special. 4 or 5 days of basketball at MSG is awesome no matter who you're playing. Especially for us Huskies fans. ;)

I remember the complete opposite.

Did you have direct tv? Because I remember several games a year having to go above and beyond to try to.find. esp before sny.

And if the ACC called tomorrow UConn would join.

UConn had a reason to go back to the Big East.
UConn football wasn’t division 1 outside of being in a power league when it joined the Big East FB.

Once the golden ticket went away you guys can’t compete with the top of the American misfit toys.
If UConn had a power conference seat you could recruit for football.

Thus it’s gone so go back to the Big East and MSG BET.

UConn killed their football program so they could play in the Big East Tournament and face DePaul and Providence again

Tell me something I don't know. It remains to be seen how our pretty decent Independent football schedule will affect the program. This thread is about SU basketball struggling as a member of the North Carolina centric basketball conference.

They did the right thing.
Their football program needed a power conference to be worth it.

Once the Big Ten and ACC said no to them. So they realize that their basketball program shouldn’t be forced to play Tulsa, East Carolina, Central Florida so their football program can suck.

The Big East basketball is good for their program.
If they could be in a power conference they don’t go back to the BE.

Syracuse made the move they did for football and a massive paycheck
