Class of 2021 DB Tyreek Chappell (PA) Staying at Texas A&M

In the portal from TAMU. Elijah Robinson was his lead recruiter. From NE Philly:

Looks like an impact player:

"Chappell started all 12 games and his aggressive, physical style tended to limit both downfield throws (average depth of target of only about 11 to 12 yards) and yards after the catch (wideouts had just 74 yards after the catch on the season). He did have four penalties but his passer rating against in man coverage was just 70.5 per Pro Football Focus which was one of the best marks in the SEC."

I think he may have only one year of eligibility remaining.

2021, 12 games, 701 snaps, PFF grade of 74.1
2022, 11 games, 695 snaps, PFF grade of 65.9
2023, 10 games, 488 snaps, PFF grade of 63.5

Comparably, we have the following guys on our roster for 2024.

Bellamy, 5'11", 180, 387 snaps, PFF grade of 72.3
Delaine, 6', 180, 191 snaps, PFF grade of 69.7

Chappell is listed at 5'11", 185.

Interesting how much he's regressed in terms of grade - wonder what that's all about. Was a Freshman AA his first year.

ASSETS:

  • Can get up on the line of scrimmage and deliver a solid punch early in routes, then use that quickness to shadow, or back off and close quickly when the ball comes out
  • Tracks the ball well downfield and shows good ball skills, including the ability to go up and high-point it in contested-catch situations.
  • Reads receivers' routes and anticipates throws at the first down marker. Covers a lot of ground in a hurry when in space. Reads the quarterback's eyes and sees the routes very quickly, then has straight-line speed to arrive with or just after the ball.
  • Always seems to find the ball quickly enough to at least get a hand on it. Not afraid to stick his nose into traffic against the run despite his size.
  • Explodes out of his backpedal and has the hands and coordination to force interceptions.
  • Can track the ball downfield and gets his head around when playing in a trail position, and Chappell shows excellent ball skills when breaking on a route. He’s a plus tackler in run support as well.
In 2021 as a freshman Chappell saw action in 12 games and played a total of 701 snaps at cornerback for the Aggies. He recorded 41 tackles, 3 assists, while adding 16 stops. In coverage Chappell notched up 5 pass breakups, one interception, and QB rating when targetted of 89.7.

As a sophomore in 2022 he played in 11 games and logged 695 snaps for the Aggies. He made 40 tackles, 5 assists, and had 15 stops. In coverage he totaled 5 pass breakups, no interceptions, and QB rating when targetted of 70.5.

WOULD BE A NICE DB IF WE GET HIM

I think one of those years was a covid year which means he has two years of eligibility?
