He played both WR and DB in high school. He asked the coaches to make him a WR because he might have seen less of a log jam ahead of him.

Without knowing what the violation was, it's impossible to judge.

No clue what happened. But if rules were made clear, and players maybe weren't taking it seriously, making an example of one of a likely non-contributing true freshmen might not be the worst thing for the team.
