Duke Postgame

People are inevitably going to complain about talent and NIL, but SMU, Clemson, VT, Georgia Tech and BC all didn’t get boat raced like this in Cameron. A big problem with Red is his teams don’t play hard enough and they quit when it gets hard.

'And they quit when it gets hard' which is so true.

Oddly, its the antithesis of who he was as a player.

Turned it off early in the second half and watched a documentary about Jeffrey Epstein. That was more enjoyable.
Well you basically switched from watching one form of abuse of kids to another

Yup. Duke beat us worse than any ACC team they’ve played. The usual suspects will say (in private threads) that it’s NIL and that “the board” is stupid. But they’re wrong.

Red is worse than Greg Robinson. Way worse.
How to fix this if NIL stays the same. What are the answers. A new coach may help but JaycWright ain't walking through that door. And he does not want to coach in the NIL era. A mid major success, the ACC is a different animal. Zero recruits coming, likely massive roster over haul. This is scary territory for the program.

This team doesn't have FF talent, but is more talented than their record. On no planet should teams like BC, Hofstra beat SU. Heck, there were plenty of cupcakes that were far too close for comfort.

JJs uncle thinks he can make it?! The kid stinks. And he wants a 23 year old kid who has been the worst leader possible to be motivated by the head coach?! The kid has robbed Syracuse for his terrible play. If you need a coach to motivate you ever, you shouldn’t be playing division 1 sports. You should have enough drive to get better on your own and enough fire to want to be better for others instead of relying on others completely. Not once did I ever blame my coach for anything related to my play during college… wild take

I’m loathe to put everything on JJ’s shoulders. No, he’s not an efficient producer. But he takes so many shots because he is the only player quick enough and versatile enough to get/create shots. We’d all like Kingz’ percentage, but Kingz doesn’t do enough to get more shot opportunities. I don’t think JJ is a chucker. He doesn’t take a lot of bad shots. He might miss them badly, but he works for those opportunities and takes open threes.

His inefficiency is a fault of the (lack of an) offensive scheme and a lack of foresight, insight, and execution. That’s on the staff. JJ should not be a first option on a good team. Unfortunately, Donnie doesn’t play like someone who is disciplined to recognize what he should do, Kingz isn’t consistently dynamic enough, George can’t beat his man…. All because it seems like the team just goes out and does what is comfortable, and not what is necessary.
I agree with this - not defending JJ but in a lot of these spots he is the only player who doesn't look like a deer in headlights on offense. We have no Alphas and that may be coaching and culture but hustling, toughness, etc is an individual thing as well.

And please don't think I am supporting Red or JJ but the players lack individual accountability on a massive scale.

It would have been nice if Red played the rest of the guys on the bench the last 2 minutes mainly Calvin Russell, just for the sake of a lifetime memory in basketball playing in Cameron indoor stadium, although I'm sure Calvin will creates many lifetime memories as an SU. football player.

One of the criteria for the new coach will be his fundraising ability. That's a skill that Autry doesn't have and why we built the horrendous roster we did last season.

Done correctly, a new coaching hire will generate excitement and unlock dollars that currently the program doesn't have access to.

We'll never be Duke or Louisville, nor do we need to be. There are schools all over the top 25 right now that had considerably less NIL and player comp than we did.

I'll let others answer this. I am sure a lot of us are embarrassed. It is our school. It does not represent my expectations at the moment. Frustrated also. But it is not a product I can be proud of and a poor reflection of a school I have given 25 years of my time and treasure in various volunteer board positions. It reflects poorly on Syracuse University that they put such a poor product in the national spotlight. I know it is a sticky situation if they should let a coach go in the middle of the season, but they could make a public announcement that while Autry will finish this season, he will not be retained for next season.
I always figured the announcement if any came would be after UNC this Saturday. There's a whole week off after this Saturday. If he drops another egg at home, just feels like there is going to be a riot

Old school, coaches would kick you in the butt. Now, with the transfer rules, and kids getting paid, it seems like some coaches have softened their stance. But guys like Dan Hurley will remain old school.

Red is too much of a nice guy. Yes, he held out Kiyan for a game, but it seems like when the going gets tough, he seems to retreat instead of attack.

GMAC is not perfect but he and Red are almost complete opposites.

That said we need guys who will battle. Guys who will dive on the floor to grab a loose ball. Even when down 30. Guys like Gavin Doty that want to hunt rebounds instead of just waiting for the ball to bounce to them.

But JJ has not been the worst leader. Although his idea of leadership is to be a me player instead of a team player. It's not preferred but at least it's something. Guys like Chris Bell are a lot worse.

It is the player-coach nexus that is failing. I don’t think there is one person on here who faults JJ or Red as a person. They are doing a disservice to each other though. JJ shouldn’t have to carry the offense in his shoulders and Red shouldn’t be asking him to. But he has for three seasons now. That said, JJ has to make better shot decisions on the court. Every turnaround jumper, fade away, crazy toss at the backboard or long three is much more likely to be a turnover than points for SU.

It’s amazing to me that people think JJ was an actual option and that he could improve. He’s shown us everything he’s got, his ceiling. Sticking with him was Red’s actual mistake. Fatal it turns out.
I was in favor of brining JJ back and I still believe that, with a coach who knows what he's doing, JJ could be a net-positive player for a good team.

The problem, as has been beaten to death here, is that JJ simply cannot be your 32+ minute/game, leading shot taker. And that's what he is. No one has taken more shots per game for us in ACC play than him.

On a team with Freeman, Kingz, Betsey, etc. that's unconscionable and a reflection of a staff that no clue how to run an offense.

I thought Russell didn't make the trip but I get your point. though actually I think the guys who played like dogs should have to play it out until the bitter end.

Per 100 possessions JJ is our worst starter. He is slightly ahead of Kiyan in PER. There’s no justification for these shot attempts. A good coach would have featured Donnie and Kingz more. We are throwing possessions away with him firing this much.
