Future Campus Framework Discussion

I believe it was channel 5 but I can’t swear to that. Believe it was a female reporter. Maybe Mary Kielar?

The more I think about it, I believe the focus of the story was on the release of the 2021 football schedule for SU. After going over the schedule, just before she finished, she added that there was something else for Syracuse fans to look forward to in the 2021 season: new lighting in and on top of the dome.

I think she her story included footage of Pete Sala talking about how the new lighting and sound systems and the center hung scoreboard were going to enhance the fan experience in a big way and were a reason for fans to come to the games. I think the interview was filmed that day. Pete looked really cold and had a mask on. I assume Pete told her this in passing while she was interviewing him and she decided to throw it into the end of her report.

Anyway, I am sure the story aired on the 6 pm newscast, right near the end (where sports is aired) and the date was Thursday night.
The segment you’re talking about aired during halftime of the women’s basketball game against Pitt Thursday on ACC network. It is still available on demand in the ESPN app. Sala talks about most of the enhancements and then the girl doing the segment mentions at the end that the renovation includes additions of lighting on both the outside and inside this spring

Thank you. The segment starts around the 42:45 minute mark of the broadcast. It includes interviews with SU AD John Wildhack, Q and Pete Sala. The interview was conducted by (I believe) SU Newhouse student Michelle Knezovic.

John talks about improvements to the fan experience. Q talks about how the renovation has stabilized the women’s program and helped recruiting. He also mentions how spacious and great the stadium locker rooms are. He talks about the scoreboard and how he is now able to tell the refs who has possession and what the bonus situation is. Pete talked about the many recent enhancements that have been made to the dome. Focused on the sound system and how so many speakers have been added over the basketball court and how fans will be able to hear announcements, understand what is said when there are presentations etc.

Pete also talked about the 2 new very large bathrooms added on the east side of the building Unfortunately, this is the opposite side from where basketball is played. The lack of bathrooms behind the end zones (east and west) is a problem for all sports but far worse for basketball, where most of the crowd is concentrated towards the west end zone.

He mentions new concession stands (4 I think, believe they are all in the corners of the lower level). Said work is going on now to concession stands on the third level. He also gave what I think is the latest update on the status of the AC install. Said it should be done by April or May. Maybe we can get a few lacrosse games in with AC. Not that it is needed then. It will be interesting to see if more events are booked for the summer now that there will be AC.

And the reporter ends like you say. To me, talking about lighting being added on the outside of the stadium can only made LED lighting on the crown truss. Pete had already said it was something they wanted to do, something that was an objective but something that they could not do as part of phase 1.

I can confirm that the louvers are covering most of the south face of the building. I believe they're a big improvement over the plain glass.

I also think it would've been a nice homage to the previous iteration if the louvers were aligned in a way that defines some large arches on the facade.

I like the idea of opening up the front of the building. It was such an ugly cube of bricks before. Not sure about those strips of wood going vertically up the side. It looks dangerously like it is waiting for dry wall.

But I will reserve judgement until I can see it with my own eyes from the outside and inside. Definitely looks like there are many areas in the building with enough natural light to support an orange tree.

Hope someday someone rethinks that decision.

It’s funny. When I was a student at SU from 1975-79, the joke was what was going to get done first. A new stadium, a student center of a gas burning trash center. The Stadium was the first thing done. My senior year all the football games were on the road and the Dome opened in 1980. I find it hard to believe they already completed a renovation of the Dome and student center. I’m happy for the university, especially what they both offer for students.

The dome opened in 1980.

The Schine Center opened in 1985.

The county solid waste burning plant had its first burn in late 1994.

As a commuter, I can confirm that a student center was badly needed (and added just as I graduated), especially for commuters. The first version wasn't a great looking building but the location was good and anything was better than nothing.

Hope the renovation addresses most of the mistakes they made with round 1.

When I was at SU in the 60's, we would look at other schools' student centers and sigh. IIRC, the Bookstore was in a converted mobile home. And we froze our cajones off in Archbold.
Sad. A whole generation of legacies lost.

And the "offices" and "classrooms" on Irving St. and University Place were really people's old homes.

The DO posted a photo gallery of pictures of the renovated Schine Student Center yesterday. It looks nice. Kind of uninspired and generic but nice.

My favorite part is the gritty stairway from the Underground Lounge. It looks really out of place but at least they took a chance somewhere in the building. It is a building for the students. Nothing wrong with being a little whimsical or different.

That's actually one of the things they didn't change. That's been like that since I was a student.

Heard from a Syracuse Reporter that the mural is going to be recommissioned sometime this year. Not sure whether that means they are going to do a whole new mural-- or add to whats already there. However, personally, I like the graffiti look. Fits the "underground" theme.

At least we had The Blinker in the basement of HBC.
