Future Campus Framework Discussion

I said "bigger" games (events), not FF. That was never an option in Syracuse (major city). However, there has been an ongoing concern about hotel capacity for large scale events (later round NCAA's, women's events, etc).
The women's Final Four would be a more modest and attainable objective to be sure.

The Frozen Four would be a possibility.

Hosting the lacrosse Final Four would be a lot more attractive as well in an air conditioned building with a roof that let in some light.

I won't give up on the dream of hosting a men's Final Four for basketball, but it would be better to focus on events like the ones above for now, assuming a renovation or a new facility ever happens.

I hope SU has discussed the possibility of hosting these kinds of events with the NCAA and is including these as carrots when discussing why it makes sense to invest money in this kind of a project, especially when talking to the county, state and federal government.

Yeah, there's a Tru or Element or something like that being built as a mirror image to the new Aloft. But really, these are drops in the bucket in a region with one-fourth of the hotel rooms needed to host a Final Four and occupancy rates hovering a little below 60%.

I don’t believe that is right that we only have 1/4 the hotel rooms. Last I read we were over 80% and may be at 100% now (10,000 rooms). The bigger problem is media accommodations, seating capacity, massive banquet halls, and places to conduct activities for fans and kids.

We would never hear the end of "Aluminum benches" (pre-update or whatever is happening), "weather", and negative toned "syracuse"

The boxes don't have bathrooms. It's not a FF venue by any stretch of the imagination.

I would love a frozen four but it would never happen. I’m in hockey country for the weekend and 3/4 of the people from Minnesota couldn’t find Syracuse on a map.

That's why there's Google.

Syracuse has always been a strong hockey town and some of the best programs in the country are nearby.

Albany recently hosted a Frozen Four. The Crunch just played a game in the Dome and drew a huge crowd.

No question it would be a huge success and set records for attendance and revenue.

They must not be very bright.
I worked for a company based out of St Paul for seven years. As a result, I spent a lot of time in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

There is a term, "Minnesota Nice", that is commonly used to describe the residents. In general, it fits the them to a tee. Because they are so nice, I think they're open to falling victim to their own naivety. After all, they did elect Jesse Ventura.

Side note: I've never seen mosquitoes in the numbers or size that I witnessed in MN while camping. There are novelty t-shirts that have a large picture of a mosquito on it coupled with the slogan: "Minnesota State Bird".

It's been written on this and other sites that the NCAA will not permit the Final Four to be held in any on-campus facility which rules out the Dome, Kentucky, etc. When Syracuse has hosted a regional, the OrangeMEN were put in another region. :(

The NCAA has established a minimum seating per this article:

https://www.foxsports.com/southwest/gallery/21-fun-facts-about-march-madness-031814

70K. In the early 90's, it was set at 40K. The Dome could have met that requirement. However, with ticket sales unreal for seats you need binoculars to see and way overpriced bringing in so much cash, don't expect a decrease in he minimum seating anytime soon.
The NCAA has also said in the past that they prefer to host their championship events on college campuses and prefer to rotate the events to all areas of the country.

If the Dome was renovated and the field level was lowered, it would be possible to seat 50K for basketball, probably more, even if 6K of existing seats were lost as part of the renovation. It would offer most intimate and closest seating for fans of any domed stadium venue currently in the rotation.

I would hope the NCAA would give a waiver on seating capacity to make the event more accessible for the most populated area in the country, to give fans who attend a chance to actually see the game and to get it hosted on a college campus again.

Let's get a renovation going first though, maybe host some smaller big events and see where things stand then.

I am for the Dome hosting the biggest events possible. I hope it happens. I admit, I lack faith in the NCAA to do anything right, though.*

Syracuse, ESPN Alum Wildhack Talks Sports Landscape (Podcast)

Around the 25 minute mark...still deciding on what to replace roof with, supposedly no financial talks with state for money or Carrier decision until decision on roof made. Hopefully will announce decision this Spring.
It is at the 25:50 mark when they start talking about the dome. Wildhack says, "recommendation later this spring". So I don't take that as a "decision" in the Spring.

Here (back in January) he says the decision will be made by the summer: SU to make decision on Carrier Dome roof by this summer

So I expect it to be the summer.

I have recently heard a May timeframe fwiw.

And yet, Albany has hosted the event.

Correct rpi is in Albany and that was like 10 years ago. Syracuse doesn’t have a d1 men’s program nor does lemoyne. There isn’t a d1 base here and Syracuse isn’t a hockey destination. High school hockey is weak, and the local programs are very watered down due to numerous program splits over the past 10-15 years.

RPI is in Troy. Cornell and Colgate are Syracuse "locals", and Clarkson, St Lawrence, and RIT are not far away.

Upstate NY is not Minnesota, but it can certainly handle the Frozen Four.

They can handle it but apparently hockey fans are unable to figure out how to find Syracuse on a map.
