FWIW, strong possibility of PINSTRIPE Bowl

What effect will this game have on college football? Zero. It's great that the team was able to overcome a lot of obstacles and make a bowl game and I'm obviously extremely happy for them. But in the grand scheme of things, being .500 and playing a game in front of a half empty stadium that has no consequences whether you win or lose is not really much of an accomplishment. Will I root for them to win? Of course. Hell, I might even be there in person to root them on. But trying to convince me that this bowl game is more important than a regular season matchup of top 20 (or possibly better) college basketball teams is pretty fruitless.

Saying it's more important than a top 10 BB matchup and calling it meaningless are two entirely different things. Who gives a stuff what effect it has on college football on a macro level. On a micro level, re: our program, which is what really matters to us, it's huge for a rebuilding program.

In this scenario, might the University look to move the timing of the hoops game to not have them overlap?

I've been a season ticket holder since the G-Rob days. Went to every single one of those god-awful home games during his tenure. I've traveled to Penn State and Georgia Tech for games. Went to the Pinstripe Bowl last year. I think it's safe to say that I'm a pretty big football fan.

No reason to get into a pissing contest but I sat through all of the Grob years also, traveling 4 hrs each way for every one of those freakin games (missed 1 actually -- Northeastern game due to a wedding). Your comments are those of a basketball first fan IMO. This is about rewarding and supporting Syracuse football. If you find that meaningless, I don't think you really get college football. The Nova game is utterly meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

This guy gets it

I feel dumb now :(

No offense, but that's a horrible example.

Once March rolls around what implications will this game have? It's not going to overly effect seeding? When Nova gets bounced in the 2nd round will they really care about getting rolled in the Dome in December? Or when Cuse makes the FF will we really care?

But if we win this bowl game we will be touting how we won 3 out of 4 bowl games in 5 years.

Bowl game is far more meaningful for a program on the upswing

And no offense to you, but who is going to care that we won 3 pinstripe bowls in 4 years with a 4 year record of 28-23? Not many people outside of Syracuse. Sure, it's something nice to pitch to recruits, but other than them, who is getting that message? Is ESPN going to be running stories on it? I sure don't think so.

the football making a bowl game this year is a major accomplishment with injuries and missed opportunities no disputing that but some fans like there college basketball team too and have already bought the tickets either single game or season and we are top 5 in basketball vs 50-60th in football so you really couldn't get on them for passing on another trip to the pinstripe bowl and it wouldn't be turning there backs on football team. Its a bad spot to be in so hopefully we won't end up in pinstripe and this matter is non issue.

Never gonna happen, Nova game is on CBS.

i see a couple of tim horton's springing up along the river. i know there's one in ogdensburg and another just recently opened in watertown.
Now your talking my stomping grounds. Where you from?

I just can't see the Pinstripe taking us again. But it is interesting to see who the football guys are and who the basketball guys are.

Rutgers vs. SU would be our best bowl matchup-wise, though.

would be hard to do since cbs has the game's broadcast so I'm guessing they have some other game at 4pm

Why do you care what people outside of syracuse fans care about?

I fully understand what making a bowl game does for the program. That is a completely separate thing from what the actual game itself means. Forget the whole sideshow and "prestige" of playing in a bowl game, the actual game itself, the result of the game, has literally no effect on the outcome of the season, aside from being able to puff your chest out a little as a Syracuse fan and have some pride in the program.

That's not meant to be a slight at the players or at the program. I mean, in my opinion, there's only one bowl game that means anything at all. The rest of the games are little consolation prizes for teams that weren't able to compete for a national title. Sure they are nice to win, but what are their real purpose, besides being a cash cow?

i've stopped in the timmy's just south on 37 that opened last fall. i've got a camp on charleston lake ontario. i've done some summer work in O-burg and recognize busters in the background.( sewer issues my last visit)

That was the original argument being made in this thread. That more people care about a bowl game between .500 teams than they do about a regular season basketball matchup between two highly ranked teams.

Now I remember. Your the one in lust with Jackie V? They still have sewer issues. Can't believe they can stay open. Eww

I'm not being combative, just asking a question. :) So I guess from your reasoning every first round game in March Madness is > any bowl game but the BCS Championship Bowl? Interesting way of thinking.

The argument is what syracuse fans care about. Not what the world as a whole cares about. Syracuse football fans SHOULD care deeply about bowl appearances and wins regardless of whether the rest of the world gives a damn. That doesn't appear to be the case with some (which I clearly just don't get).

As far as what the outcome of the game means, yes. It's win or go home. Bowl games are win or lose and go home, the only difference being the winners get a big shiny trophy to display in their stadiums, even if they only won 7 games on the year.

no i respect what your saying but would you seriously watch a basketball game over a football game cmonnn man, when I attended su you could not pay me to watch basketball, anyways im rambling on about myself, basically it is all dependant on what sport you prefer

Hoops is the Franchise. Not a question considering it's a big game.

This was CanadianSU's original post that started this conversation:

Im sorry but if fans are going to a regular season basketball game that no one outside of syracuse cares about than idk what to think anymore.

My original counterpoint was that no one outside of Syracuse will care about a bowl game pitting two 6-6 teams against one another either.
