Great defensive coordinator, bad head coach

This team is a decent offensive away from being pretty good. It's a pretty good offense away from being REALLY good.

So, yeah, we should fire Shafer right now. Ridiculous. His regime only brings in one of the best recruiting classes we've had in a long time, defense plays really well and A LOT of freshman saw time this year.

Do I agree with SOME game time decisions? Not at all. Some are glaringly stupid. But NO coach should ever be given only 2 years. Shafer is the right man for the job. I think it will become evident next year, and maybe even evident in the final 2 games--as long as Wilson is not running the offense.

Shafer and the team need an experienced successful offensive coordinator...if the school is serious about fielding a better than average football team they need to open the wallet and get one.

I think the team has enough offensive skill to perform much better than it has.

I don't think the solution is that complicated...administration and money aside.:bang:

6 offsides calls today will be my gripe for the day. Just totally unacceptable.
defense played well but seemed like we got no pressure on duke qb most of the day

Shaf needs to calm down. I am afraid he might pull a Woody Hayes - on a referee. He does not seem to handle pressure very well and that concerns me. Hard to be a HC and be that volatile.

ill give him a pass today as the officals were horrible especially on the fair catch "non call"

I'm pretty sure that was by design. They dialed back the blitzes. Duke has only given up a handful of sacks all year and they are well schooled at getting the ball out quickly. Extremely well coached team. I think Bullough had a good game plan.

it was very different defense but it was successful

What kind of goofball would pull Austin Wilson out as he really started moving the ball , into the redzone , and put in a QB who has never seen the field before? the only thought I had at that point was , " This is what a loser would do , or someone intentionally trying to lower expectations'.

Damn, if only Shafer were a healer to magically heal all ~20 players on the injury report. God, what a terrible head coach! We should be kissing his ass that this team wasn't beaten by 50 today. 10 points with the offensive personnel he's forced to put out there may be a minor miracle.

We are lucky we didn't get beat by 50 at home versus a team that is not much more talented than we are? Ok.

you follow thye gameplan shafer said they were planning on playing both so im sure the players were aware that both would see time

Question - how many players were out for Villanova or Maryland ?

Exactly! Injuries are hiding the facts that play calling is awful, qb play is below average and we lack athletes at reciever. Those are just facts.

Welcome to the Dark Side.

I actually think that coaches had mitch work on red zone offensive packages as a possible solution to our redzone woes and let wilson focus on playd outside the 20's. Each qb then only needs to learn a portion of the playbook. Also cause Mitch's arm sucks for anything more than 10 yards. Its kinda genius if it works but well you know how it played out.

Maryland game was a good offensive game outside of pick 6

I hated the fake punt today because of where the ball was and how well our defense was playing. That decision I can deal with, but the time management at the end of the first half was mind boggling. How in the world do you not work for a field goal at midfield with two time outs left? The only reason he used the time out was the crowd was booing like hell. He was shamed into trying a hail marry at the end of the half. There's been too many times that Shafer has let the crowd get to him. If you coach to the fans you won't last long. We were a 15 yard pass away at the end of the half to give our field goal kicker a chance. He's already made two 50 yard field goals. Watching them work the clock and letting 10-15 seconds run off while looking at the sidelines drives me crazy. Even with 16 seconds left on the 48 and two time outs left they run the clock down to 1 second. That my friends is coaching and not giving your team a chance to win. This is not the first time this has happened.

Special teams clearly won the game for Duke today. Their punter killed us and they almost returned two touchdowns. The first one had a penalty. Their coach knew it was only time before they would make a play to win the game. He knew our offense was incapable of scoring. He just waited and waited until they got the field position they wanted. Their punter was the player of the game.

Kudos to Redish today. He was absolutely great. Whigham on the other hand should never see the field. They purposely targeted him all day. Wherever Redish was they just went opposite. Whigham not only can't cover, her can't come close to making a tackle. You take him off the defense and they would be very good. He's a weak link they can't hind anymore. Today was another very frustrating day and what makes it even worse is that this football team will have a difficult time winning 4-5 games again next year. You can count four losses right now (FSU, LSU, Clemson, Louisville). They also have to go to Virginia. Who are they going to beat except Rhode Island and Central Michigan. Going to South Florida will not be easy and there are no gimmies in the ACC.

Does the 4th string qb explain why we can't make it through a half of football without burning all of our timeouts??? Does it explain the moronic play calling???

Why on earth would you want to end the half or game with timeouts? They are there to use, no?

way to early to start marking off losses lets at least wait until the acc schedule is released. going to a middle of road Virginia team is not that bad

People can rationalize all they want, but Shafer will never, ever win more than 5 games a season. So if you want to go through a 2-10 or 3-9 season next year under this regime to prove the point, which is absolutely certain to happen, so be it. In the process SU football is going to be killed for a generation.

Also he will never ever take a team to a bowl. And most definitely never ever no matter what win a bowl. Ever. He's also responsible for Ennis leaving early and Keith Smart.

No one does. He gets it out quickly and throws it away to avoid sacks.

Side note: on their scoring drive in the 1st half, did he not throw it to no one while standing in his own end zone? Intentional grounding, safety!?

It was a good move that didn't work out. We've sucked in the red zone all year regardless of QB. Kimble can run the ball and we went with an offense that requires the QB to be able to run it. Has Wilson shown success in the red zone this year? It's a whole different offense in the red zone. Half your playbook goes out the window including all down field passes.

Yeah, fair point about SU's success in the red zone.

yes that was right near my section we were all screaming for intentional grounding but no call

Everyone throwing Shafer under the bus under these circumstances shouldn't have the right to cheer for the team when they succeed next year under full strength.

You dream, unless he makes major changes on the offensive end. I hope he makes those changes and the team goes 8-3( more would be just too much to hope for).
