- First and foremost, we are 1-0 with a win on the road against what appears to be a legitimate team with some real skill position talent. Lester is compiling a strong program and I believe he has a shot to be a really good HC in the MAC (and he is a really nice guy so I hope he does well). I believe that if Dungey plays the full game, Syracuse wins this one 62-28. This is a great start notwithstanding some of the areas of improvement (including personnel).
- For comparison, we played BYU on the road to start the season in 2002 (with R.J. Anderson as QB) and it was clear from the start that (1) we were not going to stop their offense and (2) we were not going to score enough points to keep up. That is not the case anymore - the offense will keep us in games. There is always a chance.
- We will be 2-0 going into a home game with Florida State who is adjusting to a new head coach and a new offense. They look beatable. The Wagner “exhibition” comes at a perfect time as we need to work in some new players at the WR position and sort out the secondary. There will be some tricks in the playbook for FSU.
Some Thoughts on the Game
- The secondary was a mess (obviously) for about 20 minutes.
- Cisco really had a difficult time maintaining proper depth and Bradshaw consistently waited too long to move off his get-back and turn his hips.
- I would love to see Bradshaw move to the slot corner in place of Cordy, I think his strength is moving laterally and using his quickness to take away short slants (which is very evident in the red zone) but is less effective when fast receivers get to run up on him in the open field. Cordy just struggles in man coverage and is playing out of place.
- My preference would be to see Trill Williams (i.e., Charles Woodson Jr.) on the outside - his quick feet, strength at the line and ability to jam routes is unmatched on this team. I would love the Williams / Frederick combo going forward and hopefully see Meli get a chance against spread sets.
- Too much is being made of the offensive line / running game. We ran for 300 yards with a strong YPC.
- WMU decided to hammer the box and single up on Custis on the outside - and it worked out badly (especially considering a long De Vito pass was called back, Butler failed to run out a streak, and Dungey missed Riley for a TD on a switch route).
- If WMU played two-deep or spent more time in a soft Cover 3, the Syracuse running backs would have been much more successful.
- Really like the use of Dungey in the running game.
- His decision making is as good on the option/reads as any QB that I have seen at Syracuse, including McPherson, Graves, McNabb and Womack.
- Dungey actually reminds me a bunch of Graves and McPherson - really good at running the offense and putting the defense into a 2-to-1 bind on read/options - but passing is more confined to 9 routes and play action seam routes. The QB run will be there all day against an aggressive Florida State team so will be good for Dungey to get a “rest” against Wagner.
- The Wagner team will be a great opportunity for the young receivers to get reps. It is clear to me that Butler and Riley are not long-term solutions. Nykeim will make a difference when he returns but we need to get something out of Hendrix, Harris and/or Queeley. We just did not have the requisite playmakers out there on Friday (which really hurt Devito when we changed our route structures when he entered the game) and Florida State has a much more talented secondary and will be much more focused on ED.
- The special teams really showed the increase in talent on the SU roster. Reminded me of the Florida universities where the KO coverage is challenging the returner at the 10 yard line. Cullen and L. Williams are great great special teams players. Strong, fast and fearless.
- DeVito. Notwithstanding the commentary, this kid is going to be an excellent QB. Loved the pass up the seam to Strickland - great throw.
- Thought the defensive line was serviceable but were focused more on gap control against the WMU running game. I expect them to get much more pressure on the QB against FSU. I also thought that Slayton and McKinley did a great job holding up against the inside run, and that the LBs generally maintained excellent gap coverage notwithstanding a few blown assignments (which were partially due to very timely and well blocked and constructed play calls).
- Again, unlike prior years, Dino believes this team will be much much better in game 10 than game 1. I am very encouraged and looking forward to seeing the improvements over the course of the season.
