- First and foremost, we are 1-0 with a win on the road against what appears to be a legitimate team with some real skill position talent. Lester is compiling a strong program and I believe he has a shot to be a really good HC in the MAC (and he is a really nice guy so I hope he does well). I believe that if Dungey plays the full game, Syracuse wins this one 62-28. This is a great start notwithstanding some of the areas of improvement (including personnel).

- For comparison, we played BYU on the road to start the season in 2002 (with R.J. Anderson as QB) and it was clear from the start that (1) we were not going to stop their offense and (2) we were not going to score enough points to keep up. That is not the case anymore - the offense will keep us in games. There is always a chance.

- We will be 2-0 going into a home game with Florida State who is adjusting to a new head coach and a new offense. They look beatable. The Wagner “exhibition” comes at a perfect time as we need to work in some new players at the WR position and sort out the secondary. There will be some tricks in the playbook for FSU.

Some Thoughts on the Game

- The secondary was a mess (obviously) for about 20 minutes.

- Cisco really had a difficult time maintaining proper depth and Bradshaw consistently waited too long to move off his get-back and turn his hips.

- I would love to see Bradshaw move to the slot corner in place of Cordy, I think his strength is moving laterally and using his quickness to take away short slants (which is very evident in the red zone) but is less effective when fast receivers get to run up on him in the open field. Cordy just struggles in man coverage and is playing out of place.

- My preference would be to see Trill Williams (i.e., Charles Woodson Jr.) on the outside - his quick feet, strength at the line and ability to jam routes is unmatched on this team. I would love the Williams / Frederick combo going forward and hopefully see Meli get a chance against spread sets.

- Too much is being made of the offensive line / running game. We ran for 300 yards with a strong YPC.

- WMU decided to hammer the box and single up on Custis on the outside - and it worked out badly (especially considering a long De Vito pass was called back, Butler failed to run out a streak, and Dungey missed Riley for a TD on a switch route).

- If WMU played two-deep or spent more time in a soft Cover 3, the Syracuse running backs would have been much more successful.

- Really like the use of Dungey in the running game.

- His decision making is as good on the option/reads as any QB that I have seen at Syracuse, including McPherson, Graves, McNabb and Womack.

- Dungey actually reminds me a bunch of Graves and McPherson - really good at running the offense and putting the defense into a 2-to-1 bind on read/options - but passing is more confined to 9 routes and play action seam routes. The QB run will be there all day against an aggressive Florida State team so will be good for Dungey to get a “rest” against Wagner.

- The Wagner team will be a great opportunity for the young receivers to get reps. It is clear to me that Butler and Riley are not long-term solutions. Nykeim will make a difference when he returns but we need to get something out of Hendrix, Harris and/or Queeley. We just did not have the requisite playmakers out there on Friday (which really hurt Devito when we changed our route structures when he entered the game) and Florida State has a much more talented secondary and will be much more focused on ED.

- The special teams really showed the increase in talent on the SU roster. Reminded me of the Florida universities where the KO coverage is challenging the returner at the 10 yard line. Cullen and L. Williams are great great special teams players. Strong, fast and fearless.

- DeVito. Notwithstanding the commentary, this kid is going to be an excellent QB. Loved the pass up the seam to Strickland - great throw.

- Thought the defensive line was serviceable but were focused more on gap control against the WMU running game. I expect them to get much more pressure on the QB against FSU. I also thought that Slayton and McKinley did a great job holding up against the inside run, and that the LBs generally maintained excellent gap coverage notwithstanding a few blown assignments (which were partially due to very timely and well blocked and constructed play calls).

- Again, unlike prior years, Dino believes this team will be much much better in game 10 than game 1. I am very encouraged and looking forward to seeing the improvements over the course of the season.

Epic.

Pleasure to have you back, JO! Your insight has been sorely missed.

Yes, please post as often as possible. I would love a JO pregame and postgame synopsis every week, but, I get that is a lot. Whatever you can provide is appreciated!

Special teams are so much better this year than when Dino arrived it's not funny.

Interesting that you pointed the exact thing I noticed as well on KO coverage ...that's getting multiple people deep to prevent returners from taking it out.

We haven't had coverage like this since JR Johnson was blowing up wedges. I hope it continues against ACC teams.

And Smyzt looks like a super solid kicker with range. Those two FGs were textbook.

Alot of good points but if we move scoop into the nickle position Cordy plays , where do we play cordy? Dont like him at cb. We are so close in the secondary talent wise as I think Melifonwu, cisco, and trill have a chance to be an SEC level secondary.

It's amazing how many of the years after Grob that Special teams was still barely serviceable, if serviceable at all. It's refreshing to have what seems like pretty solid ST's.

Yes, they were, glad the coaching staff was openminded about giving him the job and not making it Hofs automatically. Kid looked confident. Also, our coverage teams were on the $$$. Something thats taken for granted, like a hold on a point after. Great job by specials. Do we even have a dedicated ST coach?

Cordy just can’t cover people and FSU will send that 5* kid right tonhimnto cover and it scares me. I suggested scoop to that spot only cause he is a good run stopper can stay with a guy longer that Cordy and is really long which clogs passing lanes and Trill should be out at corner. No doubt. Again I love Cordy but him and Ellison are twins. I wish he woulda stayed at slot.

No. Justin Lustig is outside receivers and ST coach.

Oh also FSU is gonna throw wr screens every other play and that is scoops game.

I hear ya bro and feel the same. That's why i ask. Wasnt testing you but yes, if scoop moves over, no spot for cordy. People love AC on this board, i am a fan of the person too, huge, but not sure there is a spot for him outta this 4-2-5 look.

Also, great to see a preferred walk on get an honest look. Kudos to DINO and Lustig. Lustig is doing a hugely solid job. Specials, in addition to coaching up a position group is a huge responsibility. Great to see the most efficient use of PWO and schollies with Smyzt getting the nod. THAT'S the way its done:)

meli is wearing a brace, anyone know how long that is for?

i think people over looked that the dline was not trying to create pressure as much as limit the running lanes. there is a reason WM really only had 2-3 solid runs all night, too bad they went for 60 instead of 10-15 since they had very few solid holes to run in.

tape will help with the confusion issues, got another game to fix those issues before FSU.. wonder if FSU gets those 3 oline dudes back in the next 2 weeks, they really struggled with VT pressure which is good because the RB will kill you and they always have the speed to take mistakes to the house.

Their OL was bad last year too. So weird that it’s a consistent issue with a team like that.

Great post. It is. People should check out Whigham’s posts though on Twitter after his second watch of the game. He isn’t nearly as rosey on the outlook of the season.

Welcome back Jersey Orange!

Looking forward to reading you this season!

Truth is probably a mix of the two; that’s why the discussion around here has been so lively

It is starting to feel like the lack of access to the program and the distaste for our defensive scheme is starting to to imbed a little negative bias in Whigham’s analysis.

I have felt it going that way over the course of the past few months. I am huge huge fan of his style, insights and execution but I can’t help but see a little frustration creeping in

I agree. Overall a net plus - love the insight. But he def hates the defensive scheme.

That’s possible but he’s fair to dish out other critiques as well. It’s not what some of us, especially the homers, want to hear but I think it is on point and fair. Same with his positive comments.

Knew it would come out eventually though. He can see the benefit of Tampa 2 or 4-2-5 but he was recruited in a blitz happy 4-3. I can see why he gets frustrated especially with the numbers this D has given up over 2 seasons

Toughest thing for an ex-player to do is actually critique because critique involves some criticism at times. Julian does a pretty phenomenal job of not crushing kids or coaches but very plainly criticizing where he feels there are errors or short-comings. He's got a bright future as a media guy, I would think. We're insanely lucky to have that insight.
