Does anyone think that there is any coach on earth that can be successful with this particular group of players? I have never in my lifetime witnessed weaker post defenders. It is so easy to get the ball into the paint and then have less resistance putting in the hoop.Sorry, that’s not coaching. That’s lack of talent and competitiveness. If we don’t get 3 to 4 quality post players this offseaso, we are in a world of crap again and I don’t care who is coaching the team.

Wins/Losses I am not sure because the team is terribly constructed by RED HIMSELF. But other coaches would have an offensive system in place. Defensive system in place. Have actual game plans prepared. Get their players to play hard.
If Red did all that we wouldn't be calling for his job we would be saying it is a talent problem but it is a coaching problem first then a talent problem.

I think nine out of 10 D1 coaches can do better. Yes, the ceiling’s low, but there’s zero evidence of competent coaching.

Yep, not an exaggeration to say we might have one of the 10 worst coaches in all of D1. It’s that bad in terms of Xs and Os and in-game acuity.

Depends on what you mean by “successful”. But I do believe that there are many coaches who would have this team playing much better.
It doesn’t matter though. This is the group that Red wanted. If they’re terrible it’s on him.

Red’s ability to evaluate talent is extremely subpar. That’s a deadly combination when you factor in his ability to develop talent is also extremely subpar.

I am curious what game plans, what systems, you believe would turn this bunch into winners against teams of the quality of Louisville? Just waving vague terms like these (or the vague “identity” that some posters use) isn’t convincing to me.
Same with “play hard”. Guys like Carlos and Davis are playing as hard as the players on other teams - they just aren’t as good at basketball or as physically gifted. The sad truth is that this bunch isn’t (as a group) as talented even as recent JB teams.

good thing no one has to convince you. If you need to be convinced that what we are doing on offense is only held back by the players (that red chose), and that the coaching has nothing to do with it …. Well we can’t help you.

Coaching matters in nearly every sport for a reason. It always has an impact. At the very least whatever offensive system we are running is a terrible fit for our players skillset.
And our defense is just awful. Schematically we don’t seem to adjust at all.

One thing... Louisville is a good team. They're not a great team. They're 1-4 against ranked teams. I never expected us to be competitive with them because of our body of work. But we shouldn't pretend that playing them at home is some kind of insurmountable task.
I'm far from an Xs and Os guy, but didn't Red say in his opening presser almost 2 years ago that we were going to play an up tempo, motion offense? Where is that?

I think that some guys, not all but some, are playing as hard as they are able. The problem is the makeup of the team and the innate talent level of the guys in question. I am not one to call out individual guys generally. I'll just say that Freeman and JJ aside, and not counting the frosh because they are frosh, everyone else is basically what you would consider 9th and 10th men on the bench elsewhere. A couple maybe a little higher. One or two could be starters on a team that had 4 other really solid starters. Maybe.
But that's it.
And that is a reflection of the talent evaluation by the staff and what they chose to roll the dice with. It is not a great reflection.
I think that Red has shown a number of flaws in his coaching, but the overall talent level is not high and that all goes back to the guy who put the team together.
I am not going to beat up Red on a personal basis because, at the end of the day he is one of us. Still, he is getting paid a lot of $$$ to produce results. The results aren't there right now.
I have said on here a few times but defense is not talent but the want not to let the other guy score period. Of course if you’re blessed like Jordan it’s easier but D is grit and hard nosed work over and over and it definitely is coaching. As Coach Brown says, u either teach it that way or u allow it and either way it’s head coaches fault. I would rather see a 55-50 loss with us playing great defense and just plain trying hard than the s t losses we have had. Just my view though.

I think there are coaches out there who would run a better offense. Taking turns alternating between standing around watching and taking 18 footers

I agree. I was really hoping that Freeman would be a shot blocker or McCloud would play more but having absolutely no rim protectors is killing this team because they can not stop penetration.
I'd have to think this will be the lowest amount of blocks, steals and dunks I've ever seen on the Hill.
I really thought and hoped this roster would be 9/10 deep and run and shoot better as well but as you wrote it really hasn't panned out so far and the offense looks like the later years of Boeheim without the tools to execute it, which I was never a fan of.
Effort and organization is enough to improve and win games and help (not totally) offset talent gap.

Sure Red recruited (or better, landed after trying for others) these players. That does not respond to the issue about how this actual bunch might win more games by some magic system or playing harder.

Looking at recruiting overall, I'm confused. How does Red secure Donnie and then get White and Kiyan but strike out badly with the portal last year? What is very troubling to me is that we knew priority #1 is getting a high level PG to replace Mintz. Carlos is what we ended up with. I'd be okay if a highly rated player just didn't work out, that happens. However, to end up what we did at PG is very telling. How can a program like Syracuse not be able to get better talent than that?
