Baseball doesn’t have a salary cap, small market teams at least have arbitration to control a player for years, and has the ability to trade players. How many players stick around the small markets when their value goes up? Not many.

College sports is pretty much baseball without arbitration and trading. If we’re not going to compete in NIL we’ll lose anybody that comes in after the first year whether it to the draft or another basketball team every single year, I don’t get how you can’t comprehend this.

Does West Virginia have infinite money? They big boy’ed us for a player that “wasn’t worth it”.

You get what you pay for, you want to shop at Price Rite, we need to be shopping at Wegmans.
You really don't get it... Living in lala land and pretending we are somehow in a different situation then we are. If anything your small market example is perfect, if you cannot afford judge, you better find someone that will give you similar bang for your buck. Makes no sense to tank an entire teams budget to get one player. Maybe WVU doesn't have the money and when they don't win the championship next year, they will be sorely disappointed that they over paid with no return.

I’m in lala lane? You think we can actually compete without spending like our peer schools. Go rub a couple nickels together and wack off about dome attendance while other programs are cutting checks, see where the players go.

You think Kentucky and Kansas are peer schools? That is LaLa Land.

As for WVU, we have no clue what their budget is, they might be emptying the coffers this year and then next year they wont be competing. I am trying to talk about how a team with a lower budget can look to compete while you are turning this into something akin to a billionaire refusing to dish out 20K for a kia.

Hunter Dickinson doesn’t guarantee a championship though, so it’s largely irrelevant how much money a championship could bring on its own. Even if he did make that much of a difference, you would still need to risk adjust the value of a player based on their likelihood of delivering that goal, I doubt it comes out to 5 million.
Not to mention the randomness of a one and done tourney where top teams get bounced out all the time, often early

Do not agree at all. UK and Duke were buying blue chip prospects who were only going to college because they couldn't be drafted by NBA teams. That got them fewer championships than UConn. Top-25 teams, sure, but UVA, Nova, Michigan, Baylor, etc. were doing just as well without getting 4-5 of the top-15 recruits every season.

Talent isn't as good in college ball. Most of the players are clustered around the tiers below the top echelon. This is the first couple of seasons that NIL has made it possible to buy players pretty openly and so far, what I've seen, is that every one is excited about being able to add talent to their team for just cash. So they're going a little crazy. We'll see how it is in a few years when fans get tired of another disappointing season for the $3m they spent on transfer guys for a season.
The Yankees and Dodgers overpay every year and they don’t win championships. Judge has won nothing. Case in point, Tampa Bay has one if the lowest payrolls in the game and they are running away with the division. Talent and teamwork wins, not the most NIL spent.

How did the Rays accumulate their talent? From being horrid and accumulating draft picks. They’ll lose everyone when their done with arbitration or traded away. Syracuse won’t get the top high school player because they were bad.

They haven’t been horrible. Over the past few years they’ve been very good.

Fair, but will the staff have an eye to find the best value? We’re not competing with 15 other teams, we’re competing with 300.

The point is not that players have no worth. It is that they aren't worth exuberant amounts, especially if you're basing their value off the expectation of delivering a championship (a highly unlikely event). In a world where everyone has infinite money, yeah outbid who ever you have to get the best team together (like the NBA essentially) but we, and many other schools, do not have infinite money which means you need to risk adjust your valuations or else you will find yourself getting a negative return on your investment. If you think a championship is worth 30M, hunter would need to improve your chances pretty drastically to command 5M of that 30M. Someone might pay that, and good for them, doesnt make it any less dumb (and melo is FAR better than hunter will ever be).
The market worth and inherent worth (how anyone can judge that for anyone else is beyond me) are two different things. None of us are in the market place. We are merely observers without true access. The market determines the worth of a player. That is it. If he got $10M, someone in the market determined that was the worth. The real question is not the price, but the ROI.

But for the Rays, they can find and develop talent and KEEP it for a defined time period (6 years?), Colege teams can't do that. Everyone has access to the market from year one.

I see what you’re saying

The Rays operate on value over time and avoid overpaying for what can be had at a better value elsewhere.

Again, paying players is nothing new at all. The difference value among college basketball players between the very top of the skill & talent level and the merely very good isn't that massive. The marginal value in upgrading is being waaaay overpriced because everyone is flush with cash and ready to spend.

Also, the churn in college players is much greater than in baseball or other sports. They can only play 4 years. And then there's a fresh batch every season. Most people had no idea who Ja Morant was until March of his sophomore year.

His visit concluded to Kentucky without a commitment. Still wants to take more visits. One to Villanova and a mystery team. Who’s the mystery team?
