I feel bad...

Believe it or not, there are plenty of fans who root for all our players and fully support the team and coaching staff, and don't look to assign blame every time the team comes up short or fails to meet their expectations. Some of them are posting in this thread. Unfortunately, their voices tend to get drowned out, particularly on a day like today.
Little help here? Need a hand. :)

Nope, I actually hope for our players to have success. Instead of hoping for failure so I can spout out my anger management issues on a sports forum.

More nonsense. People here root for our players to have success, if our players have success, Syracuse has success. Comprehensively, that is why we are here and what all SU fans ultimately hope for.

It's been a while, so I don't clearly remember. But even if Triche and MCW were out of the game, I think you wanted somebody like C.J. Fair taking that shot instead of the rookie. He didn't even come close, if I recall correctly.

I don't disagree, I thought that there was some idea that Cooney should have not been on the floor at all. He was the third guard and guards 1 and 2 fouled out.

He was on the floor because we had no other bodies at guard. Whether or not he should have shot though is a different story.

Except that we all would have screamed if he drove to the rim because he doesn't make layups.

Pullup for a 15 footer? Pass? Launching a 3 early was unnecessary and a poor decision for a guy that really isn't a good 3 point shooter. Numbers don't lie and the sample size is MORE than big enough...in fact, it's far too big. What a friggin chucker.

#2 would have been my preference, but apparently no one wanted the ball at the end.

He received a free education, valued at well over $125,000 at a premier, highly-visible Division-I basketball school. He signed up for it. You get the acclaim and the accolades for what you do well, and you get the opposite when you don't. That's what comes with the territory for playing for a Syracuse level program.

He could have played for Siena instead.
Jb signed up to be the coach here also and has coached 2 horrible games in a row why not jump on him, he recruited or failed to recruit a pg and a shooting guard and a 3

He had six seconds and we were down by one point. Drive to the rim, get fouled, win the game.
G had 2 seconds at the half to not take a 75 footer either but it is was it is, I do think the shot clock location had a lot to do with it though

he could have passed the ball. it started with the final 4 game. he gets the ball in those situations and NEVER PASSES. why is he always the guy taking the last shot? HE HASNT MADE 1. its selfish hero ball bs
I dunno.
Who was he going to pass to this time?

I've watched the final play 9 or 10 times now...and it's painful.
G doesn't move, Roberson runs toward the ball but to the far corner, Cooney cuts away to receive the inbounds pass and heads upcourt.
Then...Malachi follows the defenders on G so that one of them can easily cover him.
EVERYONE else besides Cooney just crowds into a small space near the far side of the key.

If Lydon had cut through the lane he would have been open for a pass possibly to the hoop.
But he didn't.
He also didn't have good position for a potential tap.
Only Roberson hustled to get it and he wound up on the wrong side of the rim.

People are killing Cooney for putting up the shot too early...but it hits the rim with bout .8 left.
How much more time should he have taken?
His defender fell down and made a spectacular recovery to challenge the shot.
Cooney just clanked it.

The execution should raise a question: was there really supposed to be a play? What was it, coach?
The usual Syracuse freelance helter skelter?

So if a player fails, crap on their grave? Okay, understood. Realize I'm not talking about criticism grounded in reality. I'm talking about the people who are saying "good riddance" to a guy who has given everything he has for the program. Listen, I can be upset he missed the shot, or took the shot in the first place. But that doesn't mean I'm happy he's leaving, especially on the note that he left. Was he the best player in the world, above reproach? Absolutely not. But he didn't deserve what he got on this forum for three years. We all know his shortcomings, and yet people still get on today to dance on his grave. It makes me wonder sometimes what certain people on this forum ARE rooting for.

It sucks he missed, but life goes on. And ranting and raving that he sucked and he always sucked is just garbage. He's one of our players, a starter, and someone who gave everything for this program, despite his limitations. It's sad that we eat our own. Yah, he's not the best player, best three point shooter, best ball handler in the world. But it's our own heightened expectations of what he should have been that are just as much to blame. He was a limited player, and got 37 to 38 minutes a game when he probably should never have gotten that. Blame recruiting, blame JB's stubborn loyalty, blame JB's insistence that Trevor always be in position to decide the game, and you can even blame Trevor's poor shot choices from time to time. But don't kill the kid in literally his worst moment. Especially when it just ends up being a rehashing of everything that has been said the last three years. It almost feels like certain posters would rather be right, than for the kid and SU to do well. And we can play the "show me the posts game" as much as we want, but that's what this board has done ad nauseam for three years.

I just can't stand completely crushing players that have given their lives for the program. It feels classless to me. And it reflects more on the posters than on the player. And I'm included in that. I came on the board after SU lost to Texas A&M in the tourney and crushed McNamara. Can you imagine that! I crushed him, and got crushed by bees for it. And he was right. It made me take a step back and think about what I posted before posting. Because while this is a forum for SU sports, I don't think it should be a forum to TRASH players. Mind you AGAIN, I think it's okay to make criticisms and back up with analysis, which a lot of posters do really well. I'm talking about the knee jerk "coondawg's a clown" stuff that I've seen on here.

Just think before posting that. Does it somehow make you feel better to post that garbage that adds nothing to the forum? If it does, maybe that's a you problem chief. And orangecuse, this isn't directed at you at all, I just thought you brought up a salient point that I wanted to respond to. I thought it might be a place to clarify my initial post as well.

To be fair to TC in that situation, no one was open or even tried to do anything. It looked like a clear out. No one set a screen. No one flashed. They all jogged down the middle of the court in a big uncoached mess.

Seemed like that. Very alarming and unacceptable really. Season on the line and this is what happens?! Lack of true dependable guards really hurt us all year. G really did Yeoman's work all year but he's not a PG. GREAT season though. One play which was a killer was around 4:55 left in 2H. Just beyond halfcourt Frank picks up his dribble. G bails him out then picks up his dribble. Then it's a bad pass, scramble, and Pitt gets an uncontested dunk. That just CAN'T HAPPEN!! I don't see these mistakes repeatedly elsewhere.

The funny part of this all for me is thus:

When they kept showing shots of him on the bench I felt so horrible for the kid. Doris just kept referencing him being out, you kept seeing him on the bench with the close-up shots. He looked sort of sad. Any maybe that's just because you're not really accustomed to seeing him on the bench. At least for the past three years. It just seemed awful for it to come down like this for a kid that had probably not seen the bench for this much time in so long, nor sat in a single important situation since his Frosh season. I really wanted him to come in and win it.

Perhaps if it was a different scenario and he came in a few minutes earlier, my reaction would have differed, but as soon as he checked in I knew we were done. I knew he would end up with the ball in his hands. And that it would end badly. I hadn't been that sure of something since...well, forever. And everyone I know had pretty much the same reaction. Obviously things could have shaken out differently, the oddest part is that it really did end that way. I mean, could he of at least come close to making the shot for once? :(

Oh well! Great kid.

Well, I made it through two pages, decided to ffwd to here. All I have to say is I'm not angry at anyone. Just disappointed, that's all. When you're a fan, you're a fan, that's all there is to it. There are no guarantees, and there's nothing you can do to make it better. You take it the way you find it. Venting is okay, it helps you put it behind you, but making it personal is going a little too far.

The only thing that does annoy me is the "he got a free education" sneering here. The education is what he was paid for working for the organization/school/team for five years. He earned it with a lot of hard work. Good luck to him and G both, and thanks for the effort.

Go Orange.

A lot of your points have been discussed in depth over the years relative to Trevor...I am on the same side and agree completely with not trashing players personally, etc., that's certainly uncalled for. I just think after games, especially tough losses, etc., you have to decipher through those particular ones and really not give it the weight that you apparently do...as well as others here who may get offended. I believe that even the fans here making those unnecessary comments, really don't mean ill will towards the player(s) in the literal sense, but just venting in the moment. Like when Coleman in the second half pulled an "Along came Polly" moment and threw "raindrops" off the backboard that ended up back at the foul line, I yelled out a What was that Coleman, are you kidding me kind of thing. Not flattering by any stretch, but no ill will towards him the person, only the basketball player's hoop prowess or lack thereof...in that moment.

When people have those knee jerk moments you elude to, they are just that, knee jerk. And, I believe those comments are geared towards the individual's play, in that moment, as well as overall, but that it doesn't reflect what they feel deep down about that players true character, integrity, as a person, etc. I mean, really, how can it? They're likely to have never met the person. It's nothing more than them choosing to be sensational, bringing attention to themselves, shock jock-ish more than anything else. That's how I view it, along with not taking anything here too seriously.

I don't disagree and I do.

Most players improve over four years, or five years in some cases. Get over yourself, this is a message board, its not like we are sending him nasty emails, or harassing him on Facebook.

I've on these boards for 15 years now and I have never seen the lack of common decency reach the levels it has this past year. It appears that the definition of a message board has now become " a place for rude idiots to spew hate towards coaches, posters and players who do not measure up to their lofty standards". I am discouraged that it gets justifies as normal fandom. It was never like this years ago, at least not at this level. Day by day this place becomes more like syracuse.com, and I am beginning to understand why former great posters like Dick in Michigan no longer visit. You can disagree without being disagreeable, make a point without being insulting, and express disappointment in performance without getting hateful and personal. Golden rules of posting are that you shouldn't write anything you'll wish you hadn't, and never write anything you wouldn't say to either the person who is the object of your wrath, or his family in personal. If lot of you are really like you post, I'd have to say you are huge asshats. And yes, I would say it to your faces.

It's one thing to express those emotions verbally in the heat of the moment as you are watching a game. Taking the time to compose a post that will live in cyberspace to express those same emotions after the fact is another, IMO.

Frankly, spare me the sermon. I haven't seen hateful or posts that shouldn't be made. I see lots of intelligent discussion and venting. These are some abysmal and bizarre plays being made by players and coaches the past few weeks. Some unsettling trends in recruiting and late season collapses also. Unless you have Mod status and have access to the posts which have been thankfully deleted (I do NOT condone hateful posts); please don't judge posters with some valid criticisms and concerns.

Same principle applies though...people generally just venting. After the fact doesn't have any more weight, unless, you choose to give it the extra weight and attention.
