Lydon to hire agent and enter NBA draft

Just throwing it out there but the only upperclassman in this year's lottery projection is Justin Jackson.

Last year, four and the year before that, two.

Yep, they are older and the scouts have not only seen their flaws but also seen what they have struggled to improve on over the years.

Two in 2014 as well. Adreian Payne soooooo close to making it three .

Personally I think it is more about the players not wanting to stay and play in this system. Just my opinion. I believe Boeheim's advice is usually sound and fair assessing their prospects at the next level.

Scouts/agents definitely tout the "another year playing zone won't prepare you for NBA man-to-man".

They said same about Waiters as well regardless of what will be said about it now, he was 6th man etc etc.

I cant sit here and say Grant made the wrong choice he may or may not have been better off, most likely he would be in same exact spot and that is what gets lost in these conversations, IMO the player would be pretty much in the same spot, the NBA will be patient for many and let you develop, D league whatever, why not get paid for it, if you improve from 23rd to 18th on one year? Does it really matter that much.

In Tyler's case next years draft probably is much softer and he could move up by default and people are right he probably will spend some time in the D league, etc but let's see where he is at 2-3 years from now, the fact is it's probably very similar where he would be if he played one more year here or not.

Of the recent early entry guys IMO Grant was the only one with a higher ceiling and a chance to be the certified star the next season and the draft bump that comes with it. All the other one's I think got out at their peak draft position.

Sources: Texas A&M foward Robert Williams - considered Top 10 pick in 2017 Draft - leaning strongly toward returning for his sophomore year.

Lollll

To paraphrase James Brown, the NBA is a man's world. Maybe Williams doesn't feel he's mature enough to handle the league yet. Maybe be really likes college. If he can really play then he doesn't have to worry about leaving early and trying to trick GM's.

More evidence that you should leave when you can. Rabb was projected about the same spot as Robert Williams is this year, returned to school, and is now fighting to be a 1st round pick along with Lydon.

Edit: I really don't get why everyone freaks out about one kid returning to school. Basically every school goes through the same exact situation that we go through, and every once in awhile, a school gets lucky like Oklahoma State did with Marcus Smart and A&M now is going to with Robert Williams. Or like how California and Syracuse got lucky to have Rabb and Lydon return for sophomore seasons.
This post is SPOT ON

If your a lottery pick yes, if your a fringe first round pick, no.
Why would you make that distinction? First round picks get a guaranteed contract and realize their dream. Nothing is guaranteed if they return to college -- not the money, not their health, not a better position in the draft.

I imagine a few teams have already told Lydon they plan to pick him in the first round.

So he has no worries.

Quite a story, though. Recall watching Lydon play before he came to SU. A few college assistants -- one from Xavier, the other Georgetown -- responded with mock laughter after they mentioned he was going to SU.

At the time, I thought he'd be a solid college player by his junior year. So he exceeded that. But, yeah, one more year would have been nice.

Excited about Moyer, Brissett and Sidibe, so we move on.

7 out of 90, if only one goes this year. But the soon to be 21-year-old Lydon should roll the dice.

I thought the distinction was about signing with an agent. The way they let you go get evaluated I feel like unless you are a sure lottery pick you hold off signing an agent until you get feedback. Even if the feedback isn't what you expected, it could help you with agent choice if you still want to enter the draft.

With all the mock drafts showing him in the 1st round I'm sure he is expecting to be signing with an agent. Unless you are a sure fire lottery pick I think the smart move is to go to Chicago and get evaluated before signing with an agent. I agree though even if he waits to be evaluated I think he hears enough to sign and move forward.

Thinking that hiring an agent helps a fringe first rounder to get individual workouts set up and scheduled. Not that there is a need to beat the bushes but with 32 teams looking to schedule individual sessions and as a late first / early second rounder a player in that position is likely on the draft boards of many more teams than a high lottery prospect help with the logistics alone would likely be a big plus.

I thought he was saying you should only ever leave if you are a lottery pick, and should always return if you are projected at the back end of the first round.

If that's the case I don't agree at all. I think in many cases taking the guaranteed money is the better option for kids.

After last year, I figured foregone conclusion he'd be gone after his Soph year - but he didn't have nearly the Soph season I thought he'd have... seems like he shoulda tested waters before signing w agent, but like others mentioned above, must be getting some assurances for 1st round...
thx for helping get us to the f4, TL!

I thought that was the reaction about BJ Johnson.

I have always leaned toward a player taking the money if the money is there for them. In Tyler Lydon's case I personally don't think he is ready to play in the NBA, but what do I know. I think he should stay at SU and put on 15 to 20 more pounds of muscle and leave after next year. I am not saying this because his leaving would hurt the team, it is solely based on what I truly believe is in the best interest of Tyler Lydon. I wish only the best for him, and hope whichever way he goes it truly does workout for him!

A lot easier to pack on that muscle in an NBA program than it is in college.
