NFL Social Issues

There are all sorts of college players that tore it up in college and go nowhere in the NFL.
And all of them had more opportunities to prove themselves than Sam.

Neither the Rams nor the Cowboys gave Sam an opportunity to play LB. He's faster than a number of All-Pro defensive ends.

By your logic, the Jets shouldn't have signed Ealy. He's slow and he wasn't good enough to play for two other teams.

The Cowboys gave him a good hard look, he just wasn't good enough to make the team.

Meh, he was on the practice squad for a few weeks. This was a team with a glaring need at DE and they didn’t even play him.

Can anyone name a comparable player that was kicked to the curb as quickly as Sam? It’s laughable to suggest that a preseason stint with one team and a cup of coffee with another is all you need to determine that an SEC DPOY isn’t good enough to play in the NFL. And the other 30 teams simply trusted the Rams’ and Cowboys’ judgment? It doesn’t make any sense.

After reading through all of these responses again, it’s a miracle that Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumervil have careers.

And all of them had more opportunities to prove themselves than Sam.

Two teams gave him a good look. How many would it have taken to make you think he got a fair shot?

His CFL experience is after the fact.

The fact is his CFL experience showed Sam did not have a strong enough desire to be an NFL player. He probably grasped what you're struggling with - he wasn't good enough.

Look how many heisman quarterbacks flame out early. College credentials don't just translate linearly to NFL ability or success.

That's not accurate. At the end of the regular season his senior year, Sam was projected anywhere from a late-first to a third round pick. His stock didn't drop until after he came out. Now he didn't have the greatest showing at the combine, but that's nothing new and I challenge you to find another player who went from a second/third rounder to a seventh rounder based on nothing more than the combine. (And he actually would have gone undrafted if not for Fisher wanting to make a statement.)

His preseason stats were solid. Two, even three years after his stint in the NFL was over, every player with the same number of sacks in that preseason was on a roster somewhere. Every other former SEC Defensive Player of the Year has been given numerous chances to succeed in the NFL. Sam's own college teammate, Kony Ealy, is still getting opportunities despite being considered a bust. (Going back to the early draft projections, there were debates over which of the two would get picked first.)

So even if you're right that he wasn't good enough, he didn't get much of a chance to prove otherwise and you would be hard-pressed to find another player that was treated the same way.

Sam didn't even make the Montreal Alouettes.

Don't worry, Cam Newton provided some cannon fodder if anyone wants to go from the pretend discrimination of a gay defensive end to s e xism towards a female reporter.

Cam being Cam.

Which is all the more reason why it makes sense, if he could help them at all, don't you think he would be on a roster? I watch every play of every Cowboys game, we haven't had a legit pass rusher since Demarcus Ware was in his prime. Tebow won plenty of awards in college, college awards don't always translate to pro success.

Several, over a 2-3 period. You know, like with most players who share similar credentials.

You’re struggling with my argument. If he’s not good enough, so be it. But he did not get a fair shot compared to other players of his ilk.

They get a longer leash.

Tebow was with four teams. He has plenty of advocates who say he didn’t get a fair shot.

The problem is centered around how you define "his ilk". You seem to think that because he was a very effective college player that that should translate into the NFL. As several here have tried to explain to you - that is often not the case. He also didn't have the measurables in terms of size and speed. He was a tweener that didn't fit either position. His CFL experience further highlighted that maybe he didn't have the all-out desire to be an NFL player either since he quit after one game.

Give one comp. Just one. You keep talking about effective college players who didn’t last. Name some.

Measurables? He’s bigger than Dumervil and about the same speed. He’s a little smaller, but also faster than Suggs, who is himself a LB. Both of those guys had terrible combines.

There’s data that shows players with similar credentials and/or similar postseason stats who were in the league for 2-3 years. What else would you measure them by?

Cam Newton "Its funny to hear a female reporter talk about routes" (referring to wide receiver routes)

So, is criticizing this quote PC run amok...or is he truly a moron.

Going deep on this on Mike and Mike while I drove in this morning.

It was dumb on Cam's part. He can't say that. Do you think he would get that if the reporter answered back with a comment about it funny listening to a black quarterback talking about calling plays for himself?

And yes, I am saying this to provoke conversation, not because I think this way.

The latter and only the latter. What he said is textbook sexism. He demeaned her in public. How is this debatable?
