This is the reason labor unions were started in pro sports, the amount of money Syracuse and a lot of schools generates is so large compared to what go towards the athletes. You talk about tax, how much is SU paying in tax? How much money do the citizens of the city bring to the university and they don’t pay a cent in tax and the city is in shambles. Garbage

it was only a few years ago that the SU AD ran in the red.

Counterpoint: so what?

I mean, what harm is there to SU if Kadary makes a few bucks selling promotional tweets or getting a tiny cut of jersey sales? Is the athletic department going to be bankrupted because a local car dealer wants to out Buddy in an ad?
I’ve said this ad nauseam so I will stop after this but I think it’s naive to think the only side $ Kadary etc will have access to is from a Twin Trees commercial. If unregulated, it’s a bidding war for recruits with the promise of endorsement dollars. I mean, why wouldn’t it be?

If bags are being dropped now, multiply it tenfold if it’s out in the open. And watch the have nots, have less. Again, the players deserve more. A trust or a cap on earnings seem like a reasonable compromise.

Why would it be unregulated?

There's nothing worse than implied, or explicit, slippery slope arguments. We live in a society that draws lines all the time, in every facet of life.

I used to post images like this when people would say that Twitter had no place in recruiting.

I agree. We know there is money involved in recruiting under the table and hush hush. If it’s all OK to do, it’ll get worse and that ok if that what people want. But the schools with the biggest boosters will win out more than they do now. Expect SU to get the short stick. Between being allowed to bid for players and this open free agent player movement, college amateur sports will never be the same.

There are a lot of things worse. Plenty of people have suggested players have carte blanche to profit from their likeness, mostly suggesting it would be a small number of players and/or a small amount of money.

When people talk about trusts, or caps, I feel like we're fundamentally trying to solve different problems.

Competitive balance is not a problem to solve, big picture. Why it's even a goal is bizarre to me.

The problem to solve is that the NCAA restricts the rights of student-athletes to benefit from their identity. The identity they were born to have, and maintain as a living, breathing person.

Again, big picture, what does identity mean in the world today, and how much does it matter?

I view it as a human right. So the problem to solve, is that the NCAA is violating human rights.

Granted, my view seems extreme now. But I promise, in the not too distant future there's going to be a common global understanding that in a world that continuously overlaps more and more between the physical and digital, protection of identity is critical to human life.

Great take. Wouldn't add much.

One thing is clear is that this summer there will be movement on this issue for real as long as these athletes can get sound representation. It's gonna be tough to get movement in Congress with so many other issues in the hopper. State level doesn't fix this. Needs to be action by the NCAA.

I agree with that - there is an incredible opportunity for the NCAA to lead. They should lead.

I don't expect them to. But they could and they should.

I think some of us think “Syracuse won’t be as good as sports” Isn’t a good enough reason to not address the situation at hand

Appreciate the passion and insight but yes, that’s over the top for me. They enter willfully into a contract. Part of that is a restriction on certain outside income. I certainly think that should change but not to an unregulated market. There is little question that the colleges are what give the majority of players brand and marketing value. There should be greater mutual benefit.

Maybe college sports are just such big $ and the moral quandary is too great to preserve them. I believe they should be able to compromise. Otherwise just divest revenue sports and make them semi pro on campus.

Seth Towns - seriously impressed with this kid. Articulate, cogent, well thought out arguments that are absolutely defendable. Maybe Harvard wasn't just about basketball. The kid sounds like he has a future in whatever he wants to do..
I hear it's a pretty pretty good school.

Rumor has it that Gordon Hayward was an incredible tightwad his first year in the NBA, and that he had some kind of endorsement deal with Subway and Olive Garden that included free meals. Supposedly he leveraged those free meals every single day his rookie season.

I have no idea if it's true, but I've heard it multiple times from different people, and I love funny weird stuff like this, so I believe it.

If an athlete is bringing revenue then they should get paid.

Simple as that.
95-99% of all athletes at the D1, D2 & D3 level are a net loss to the school.
