Not that anyone needs another opinion (mine), but it does seem like the university might have panicked and made the situation worse. No one outside of Syracuse and some college basketball junkies was paying attention to the strange press conference on a Wednesday afternoon. Now, releasing the statement right afterward with no quotes from JB and not mentioning retirement, it's a bigger story, calls more attention to the mess, and makes both JB and the university look bad. Seems like they could have given it a day or two to let everyone calm down and try to get JB onboard.
But I suppose they may have known that wouldn't happen, so they just ripped the band aid off. Either way, it's really a shame it all ended this way.
