The QB situation in 2016 and 2017 will be fun to watch. As it stands right now...

2016 (assuming Hunt can go the whole 2015 season, Wilson comes in for garbage time and Long, Dungey and Womack redshirt)

RS Jr Wilson
RS So Long
RS Fr Dungey
RS Fr Womack
True Fr Culpepper
Walk-on JR Mahoney

2017

RS Sr Wilson (transfer or graduate candidate, if he does we will )
RS Jr Long
RS So Dungey
RS So Womack
RS Fr Culpepper
Walk-on Sr Mahoney

There will likely be transfers and/or position changes once a true starter emerges. I hope one of these kids fits the bill. While the younger kids are completely unproven, it's hard not to feel good about the options here. Not sure if Long has the physical tools to get it done, but if he gains some serious weight and gets his shoulder fixed to go along with his moxy, he could surprise some people. Wilson has had a really good offseason in the gym and has a strong arm, but he seems to lack any pocket feel or confidence. Culpepper seems like the real deal assuming we get him to sign. To put things into perspective, Lester never thought he had a chance at him, so when he committed it was a game changer. I would not be surprised to see one of Womack or Dungey being thrown into games this year. Just reading the tea leaves.

I really like both of the kids coming in this year (Womack and Dungey). IMO, one of them will be the starter in 2016 and I'm leaning towards Womack.

Besides the DL, this is the position I'm most excited about for the future.

I feel like if Womack sees the field, it will be in an "Athlete" role.

This will definitely be an interesting situation to watch develop. I'm really hoping whoever takes over in 2016 turns into a very capable 4 year starter. And if that's not the case, I'd love to see Culpepper take over the reigns in 2017.

I think Dungey is the guy next year. Womack moves to WR and kills it, ala Kevin Johnson.

I also could see Rex makes waves since he's arriving early.

I've always preferred Long to Wilson, but I'm not sure he's the guy.

Womack turns into a better broyld and dungey becomes the peoples champion

Long had some moments to shine last season, and also was humbled a bit. I think he learns from that, sits this year, and holds down QB the next three years and ends up ranked high in our record books.

We are the most fickle bunch of knuckleheads. Every time we get a new QB recruit, he is the second coming of Donovan and is going to start next year.

Last year was another lesson in how hard it is to transition from HS to CFB, much less P5. While it is noteworthy that Lester's system is apparently easier to learn, none of these newbies (FNG's) are likely to see the field any time soon.

Wilson or Long has a far better chance of starting than any of the others. If any of the underclassmen steals the job - fantastic, but I am not holding my breath.

He is a poor man's Chris Leak. He needs to gain 25-30 lbs and really get stronger. Based on pictures alone, it looks like he has bulked up some.

The shoulder/nerve issue he dealt with last year is concerning. He kept throwing his arm out.

Based on what we've seen so far from Wilson and Long, I'd disagree with this stance. Who knows what will happen, but I'm betting that Long or Wilson will not be the starter in 2016.

2017, who knows, we may be in a position where we have a true freshman come in and challenge. We're in the running for two ELITE QB prospects (Jack Coan from Long Island - who I'm actually betting winds up at Michigan - and Kasim Hill from Maryland, who I think we have a very realistic shot at landing...both guys will be 4-stars and probably among the top 10-15 QBs nationally).

I like Dungey going forward, but I'm not ready to say that Womack is going to get moved. He very well could, but we'll see. I don't think Wilson ever emerges as more than a backup, and I still think AJ is just too small. Culpepper will be interesting, I'm not sure he'll unseat Dungey if he takes the reins though. Dungey just feels like he has "it."

i think wilson will be the back up this year, will see some time...and since i cant see a positive win season, next year when SS' job is truly on the line, he will go with the vet to try and get him wins.

in other words...wilson.

OK, I got a $44 contribution to the Orange Club that says you are wrong. You in?

I am trying to throw last year out as playing QB was a suicide mission. Totally unfair to AJ especially. At least Wilson had a RS year under his belt.

For the sake of redshirts, Wilson will be the backup this year. I think Lester will get 1 of the younger guys in though at some point. And if Shafer's future is on the line, cannot imagine Wilson will get the nod. At least I hope not, unless the kid has completely morphed.

Yes. And I agree with you that last year was hard to decipher ability amongst the mess, but I'm not bullish on either of them. This summer will be awesome.

Bottom line--we need somebody to emerge as a quality starter at QB post-Hunt. It doesn't matter to me whether it is Long, Dungey, Womack, or Culpepper -- but one of those guys absolutely needs to be the real deal.

I'm so tired of the post-McNabb curse. We've had 1 good year and maybe 2-3 acceptable seasons of QB play [if that] out of 16. I look forward to having a multi-year starter who is an above average playmaker.

May the best player win.

We certainly have the most promising group of kids than we have had in a long time. A lot rests on Coyle. Will he think SS has done enough to let him finish the job or not? I think he will.

I HOPE he will, and that it is based upon the on-field performance of the team, warranting more time for Shafer.

I am pleased with the direction that recruiting is going. We are an eyelash away from the top 30-40 class range. It's the game planning / in game coaching / offensive execution that has me concerned. This year is going to be interesting.

Should we be this high on Dungey? I know nothing about him other than he was a lowly-regarded recruit. Is he different from the vast majority of other 2-star QB's we've recruited over the last 15 years?

I'm high on Long (after his first few games it looked like Hunt's job was in serious jeopardy) and think having a full redshirt year to gain strength will be all he needs.

Maybe Dungey is amazing and thanks to Syracuse's dumb luck and/or superior QB talent evaluation skills very few programs noticed. But is there real evidence to suggest that or just blind hope?

I wouldn't say Dungey is "lowly regarded." He was the best QB in Oregon last year, but the problem there is, high school FB in Oregon doesn't have a particularly sterling reputation. But he's 6-4, extremely athletic (basketball and track star as well) and smart enough to have been an Ivy League recruit. And watching his film, he just looks like such a smooth athlete. I think he's got what it takes to succeed at this level.

Believe he is a 3 star? As far as I can tell anyway. I think he was one of, if not the best QB in Orgeon last year?

I'm not sure he is "lowly-regarded".

Skowt ranked him as the #1 QB in Oregon, if I'm not mistaken.

(FAKE EDIT): Yes, Skowt ranks him as the top QB in Oregon.

If people want to go on Skout evals ( which are apparently worthless) then their west coast analyst actually had him the biggest sleeper in the entire Northwest.

IMO we have some of the best talent accumulated at the position in a long time (assuming Rex signs). Personally just from highlight reel, and what they are capable of doing I want to see Womack win the job. I think he could be the most dynamic, having the best arm, and best speed/quickness. But we all know a lot more goes into the position then your physical traits. I think it will be a battle between Womack and Dungey for the job, with Rex waiting in the wings to compete. I just get nervous Womacj won't get a fair shake at qb, because they will be too worried about moving him to WR. I just want him to get a fair shot, all things equal, at qb first before they decide on any moves.

He is 100% going to get a look at QB. It will take the freshmen some time to learn how to "play" the position in this system, but you can't craft athleticism and Womack is loaded with it.

Womack=Dom McPherson when he was a freshmen....it's all mental at this point
