Class of 2018 SF Cole Swider (RI) Transferring from Villanova to Syracuse

I was being sarcastic but it does feel like at times Gerry is blamed for more than I would normally blame a 3rd assistant for. There are people who are results focused and have criticized him like Alsac for example that I think are fair. There are other people who can't seem to bring themselves to blame the head coach for certain things and then have to pick someone else and he seems like an easy target since the other two guys have been other places etc.
to be precise, however: during the critical period of recruiting restrictions, when the off-campus recruiting was limited to 2 coaches, Gerry was not exercising typical "3rd assistant" responsibilities. It was Red & Gerry during large chunks of time, especially the critical period of last summer when the 2017 class should have been locked up.

that being said, he has not deserved the blame he has received. the NCAA put it to SU and the program got what they intended. it was remarkable that they came through as well as they did. Gerry was like Marky Mark in The Perfect Storm.

and you know I am not one to easily defend GMac.

JB is the closer. Especially on this one since it appears Swider will decide soon vs 6 months from now. And you consistently forget Moyer and Sidibe.

Depends how they produce.

That's an absolutely hilarious comparison.

There's not a thumbs up gif big enough.

Marek will be gone as the #1 overall pick after 1 year

I love your optimism

We need a sarcasm font.

I was hoping that cuseinseattle was serious, and if so, I love how he has high hopes for this team. I also think the team is going to do surprisingly well and exceed expectations. I doubt Marek is going to be the #1 overall pick next year, but I think he is going to produce on day 1. I think there is going to be more room on the team in 2018 than we think, and Battle, Marek, and possibly another 1-2 people will jump ship to the draft or Euro pro league. We will definitely have room for Swider, a high-rated PG, and Bazley/Shittu.

I feel a lot more confident about getting Swider now that you have increased SU's odds. I have to ask though...do these odds come to you in your sleep? Or is this a throbbing bunion kind of thing?

I'm flattered you put that much stock in my opinion, but I wouldn't want to give away my prognostic criteria or methods...that's a trade secret. ;)

The question is simple. Can Gmac close?

What percentage of the time do you think Red, Griff, or Hop before him would close against Duke or UK?

I think people miss the point here. If he was losing guys to Providence I would be more upset. He's going against Duke and UK and probably the only reason we were in it for Quade, Tucker, and now Swider to begin with. At least use some logic here if your going to be critical every post.

The only thing I know is that the majority of the time if your recruitment drags out (eg: waiting until spring, may or may not reclassify, gigantic lists that are wittled down extremely slowly) you aren't coming to Syracuse . This is the issue that I feel should be better identified early on . That's my only problem with recruiting this day and age .

I somewhat agree with this, when it comes to kids looking at UK, Duke, etc. Quade had his sights on Kentucky/Duke, that was our error, we have noted that many times. He dragged us along and we let him. We have gotten guys like TT, AW, very late in the process, and in the case of TT, beat out MSU who we know to be a very good recruiting school.

I was going to use those names as examples but then I just said "the majority of the time". I feel most of the time the writing is on the wall early on. It's enjoyable and refreshing to see elite level players with small lists of school they are interested in, not huge lists where they have absolutely no intention of going to 90% of the schools listed .

The knock has never been that Gerry was a poor recruiter. The issue that people raise is that the 3rd assistant shouldn't be the guy going up against Cal and K.

So let's not go after Cole Swider because Gerry is the only assistant that has the relationship with the kid. Sounds like a great strategy.

That's not true, there were plenty of times on here, it was about his recruiting being poor. I'm in the, give him more time to do his thing and grow his relationships, camp. But him with Swider seems to be going good, and yes I'm aware he's had other good relationships that didn't work out, against the top programs.

If that's what you got out of that post, sure.

I personally think they would do much better.

What does that mean? We came in 2nd for Tucker and Green.

In recruiting you either get the kid or you don't.

Does "much better" mean we would have got them? It's hard to get "much better" than 2nd, next to actually landing the kid.
